14 best ga garage heater
A GA garage heater, which stands for "Gas-fired Air Heater," is a type of heating appliance designed to provide warmth and comfort to garages and similar spaces. Unlike electric space heaters, which use electricity to generate heat, GA garage heaters utilize natural gas or propane as their fuel source to produce heat. These heaters are commonly used in residential garages, workshops, warehouses, and other areas where a reliable and cost-effective heating solution is needed.
Here are some key features and characteristics of GA garage heaters:
Fuel Source: GA garage heaters typically run on natural gas or propane. They are connected to a gas line or use propane tanks as a fuel source.
Efficient Heating: Gas-fired heaters are known for their efficiency in heating large spaces quickly. They can provide a high amount of heat output, making them suitable for larger garages or workshops.
Ventilation: Proper ventilation is essential when using gas-fired heaters to ensure the safe removal of combustion byproducts, such as carbon monoxide. These heaters often require venting systems to expel exhaust gases outside.
Thermostat Control: Many GA garage heaters come with built-in thermostats, allowing users to set the desired temperature and maintain a consistent level of warmth.
Installation: Installation of gas-fired heaters should be performed by a qualified professional to ensure safety and compliance with local building codes. Proper gas connections, venting, and electrical wiring are crucial.
Size Options: GA garage heaters come in various sizes and heating capacities to suit different space requirements. The choice of heater size depends on the garage's square footage and insulation.
Wall or Ceiling Mounting: These heaters can be installed either on the wall or suspended from the ceiling, depending on the design and layout of the garage.
Safety Features: Modern gas-fired heaters often include safety features such as automatic shut-off mechanisms in case of overheating or oxygen depletion sensors to monitor air quality.
Cost-Efficiency: Gas is often more cost-effective than electricity as a heating fuel, which can lead to lower operational costs over time.
In summary, a GA garage heater is a type of heating appliance that uses natural gas or propane to generate heat for spaces like garages and workshops. They offer efficient heating solutions but require proper installation and ventilation for safety. It's essential to follow manufacturer recommendations and local codes when installing and using these heaters to ensure safe and effective operation.

Radiant Vent Free Heaters
Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.
Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.
There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and Infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.
The Infrared heater warms objects. It doesn’t warm the air like a Blue Flame. It can be put in an area with objects which the heater will heat and then the object will heat the air. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.
Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this one have a thermostat n blower |
Answer: | Yes a blower and a thermostat. |
Question: | I would like to use this at a cabin that is at 10,750 feet above sea level. Most appliances have to be ported differently. Will it work |
Answer: | Yes but the mfg discusses elevation in the paperwork that comes with unit. I would call them |
Question: | The specs do not list a blower. blower is mentioned is in the q&a section only. does it really have a blower? if so, why isn't it in the specs |
Answer: | Thank you for your inquiry. A passive non forced air blower is available with all our vent free heaters 20K or larger. It is a purchase ad on. |
Question: | How long is the blower power cord |
Answer: | About 5 feet |
Question: | Where do i buy natural gas for it |
Answer: | You tap into an existing gas line |
Question: | sq ft insulated garage (including garage door). Would this take care of warming up the garage |
Answer: | I believe that it would. I have it in a 200 sq ft room with 13 ft ceilings, the house is 118 yrs old w/no insulation and it works very well. I do have the bigger size in another room.It has 3 burners instead of 2 and you can turn on 1,2 or all 3. It heats 2 rooms I have. |
Question: | Is it possible to use with a thermostat rather than the low and high settings |
Answer: | The heater is not designed to be used with an external thermostat. |
Question: | How are the fumes vented ? I don't understand how you can burn something and not have to worry about carbon monoxide |
Answer: | The fumes are not vented. Natural gas is mostly H₂, gasoline is about 50% carbon, coal is all carbon. So being mostly H₂, the combustion products are mostly H₂O with a little CO₂, not unlike what we breath out. Coal and gasoline will asphyxiate you fairly quickly because of the high carbon content, which must be vented outside. |

Question: | I am looking for a garage heater like this one. But I want the thermostat set for a low temperature, say 35 or 40 degrees. Any suggestions |
Answer: | Well of coarse there are a lot of factors that determine what the temp in your garage can be dialed into like insulation in the side walls drywall and insulation in the ceiling which I have in my garage, also the outside temp.i can not give you a exact answer but I do know that at a outside temp of around 35 deg the heater kept my garage at about 58 deg on low So hope this helps some,I do really like my gas heater which has the fan in it also it gives me that instant heat I also have a wood stove that I use when it gets up to temperature I turn off or way down the gas heater of course depending on outside temps |
Question: | I have a television on a wall mount about 6 feet up the wall. can i place this unit on the wall under/below the tv down at the floor level? tia |
Answer: | We do not recommend putting a television above this unit. -GHP Group Customer Support |
Question: | How long to heat a insulated garage from 40 to 60? 24x24 garage |
Answer: | That's really hard to answer how many doors how big is your door how well is it insulated there's no way I can really tell you that mine heats up pretty good in about an hour and a half when it's only 15-20 degrees out with a 16-foot garage insulated door and two doors going outside one window. |
Question: | does this heater turn off and on with the thermostat |
Answer: | I have to say the first one I bought work fine the only problem I has was the igniters kept going bad what is a given considering how many years we've had it. This is the second one I bought I just had it installed 2 days ago and for some reason when you go to turn the heat down it shuts off and you can't get it to restart so there are issues apparently I need to address the company that sold it to me about. And so far the heater has not went up or down not once it stayed the same unless you adjust it but when you adjust it it shuts off. That's the best honest answer I can give you for the second one I bought. |

Question: | Are there any issues/adjustments for installing at an altitude of |
Answer: | Yes I would think so. Please review the manual. |
Question: | What parts/size are required to attach to a Natural gas stub out |
Answer: | Regarding parts, I used a reducer elbow then attached a flex pipe to this (approx 18" in length). Regarding size, I used 1/2" piping from my basement to the heater which is attached to my ceiling in my attached garage. You have to be careful what size pipe you use. The longer the distance from the source the larger the pipe you'll need. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Can you mount it to tilt/angle out and or to the side or is it locked at a 90d strait down |
Answer: | I put an angle finder on my heater and it registered about 40 degrees. It is fixed mount but you could probably bend it some. I use mine in a 40 by 22 attached garage and set the thermostat at 45 degrees. It keeps the snow melted off the vehicles does not run all the time. Great heater. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many different settings are on the thermostat |
Answer: | You tap into an existing gas line |
Question: | The natural gas arrived and says an external gas regulator must be used. do i really have to do this? can i just hook it up to my homes natural gas li |
Question: | Is there a spec for how much natural gas psi needed here |
Answer: | The heater is not designed to be used with an external thermostat. |
Question: | Does this unit turn on & off without pushing the button? i would like to hook it up to a nest thermostat in my garage. is this possible? thank you |
Answer: | The fumes are not vented. |
Question: | Where do i buy natural gas for it |
Answer: | Yes, but be cautious....if you're buying it as a heater versus an ornamental piece, you should consider other options. The amount of heat the unit puts off is very unimpressive. |
Question: | sq ft insulated garage (including garage door). Would this take care of warming up the garage |
Answer: | The ones we have do not throw off a lot of heat. They are nice for the long flame that lights up dining areas, but for heat, I would go with a different style. |
Question: | Is it possible to use with a thermostat rather than the low and high settings |
Answer: | Yes but it will depend on the ceiling materials and the clearance between the top of the heater cap and the patio ceiling |
Question: | How are the fumes vented ? I don't understand how you can burn something and not have to worry about carbon monoxide |
Answer: | It's a bit over 6ft.but you'd need at least 9 for safe use.this is very pretty to watch not as good for heat.but I bought it for the entertainment/warmth primarily |
Question: | can it be placed on wooden deck |
Answer: | This heater is great! I'm sure Amazon stands behind all of their Amazon basics stuff. I just set mine up again for year 2 and could not be more happy. Buy with confidence. |
Question: | thinking of buying 4 of them however just read the review and it says last years model is that true also does it throw of a lot of heat |
Answer: | It lasts a really long time. On a full tank, mine will last 12+ hours on a mixture of medium to low setting, about 8-10 on just medium |
Question: | can it be used under covered patio |
Answer: | Use an electric heater for covered porch. The risk of fire and / or carbon monoxide poisoning if not properly vented or if the unit is inadvertently left on is too high. |
Question: | What is the ceiling clearance |
Answer: | I know! The instructions are not very clear but if you move it to approximately 9:00 position (marked Hi) press in and hit the ignition, it will start. Hold the control knob in for a while and you will see it start to glow... it may "pop n' spit" a bit but it will calm down shortly. If a windy day keep the knob depressed a bit longer, release; and don't leave it until it a couple minutes. Make sure it is really going before you trust it. If you are like me (bald)... wear a hat, it really throws out the heat when you are close. |

User questions & answers
Question: | if it has a thermostat, what temperature is it shutting off? I have a different fire place with a 73 degree shut off manufacturing setting, not enought |
Answer: | I asked the manufacturer for the thermostate info. It has a knob on top from 1-5. 1-60.8°f 2-75.2°f 3-89.6°f 4-104°f 5-118.4°f He also said that they could vary slightly from heater to heater. |
Question: | I don't see a pic or anything that shows where/how the fan mounts. Does anyone know |
Answer: | The fan will mount on the back of the heater. There is a punch out that will be removed and the fan will go in it's place. |
Question: | Would this heater work in a 2 car garage |
Answer: | In short yes. we have this on the first floor of our house. it is not yet winter, but this is a 30,000 BTU heater; it heats the entire house fast - like 20 mins upstairs and down. I would say the same for a two car garage. I plan on moving this unit to the basement shop which is exposed to ground level in the back and unheated; basically a 1 car garage back there and I expect this to out perform. I will add one thing: this is the blue flame unit. I have had shop heaters before and prefer the radiant heaters (of which Mr Heater makes one just like this) - they have the clay looking elements in them that glow red/orange; those heaters will heat things in the space and then those items give off the heat. I used to aim one at my roll away tool box. in an area where you might have a lot of space up above, such as a loft the radiant version of this heater may be better as it will heat the items it is near with less heated air floating up. either way, this is a safe bet. |
Question: | Does the mhvfb30ngt unit have an automatic igniter to maintain temperature or do you to to push an igniter switch to start it each time |
Answer: | It has a pilot lit that will stay lit at all times, unless you turn the dial to the Off position. The heater will start up when the thermostat dial settings determines that it's time to turn the heater on. |
Question: | I stripped the threads on the heater, how can i fix this |
Answer: | You can tap it out if you have a tap and die set, otherwise you will have to order new parts |
Question: | Want 30000 Btu radiant heater with blower |
Answer: | The 30000 BTU heater will be the model number MHVFRD30LPT. Click on link provided to view the heater. https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-Corporation-Radiant-MHVFRD30LPT/dp/B01DPZ56KU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514918538&sr=8-1&keywords=MHVFRD30LPT |
Question: | Will this work with a 20 pound tank |
Answer: | Yes, but you will need to add a regulator between the heater and the 20 pound tank for safety |
Question: | So, it has no thermostat but output is variable? How does this work |
Answer: | It does NOT have a thermostat, settings are either high or low. It will NOT turn on and off on it's own when reaching certain temperatures, it even says its NOT thermostat controlled in the manual. |

Answer: | Call the company |
Question: | I have a wood working shop. Would dust be problem for this heater |
Answer: | This heater has hot and arcing parts inside and could be a fire hazard in a woodworking shop if placed in an area with a lot of wood dust. |
Question: | What sqare footege is this ideal for |
Answer: | I have a 20x30x10h shop. Lots of windows coverage. Non insulated floors above open front20x30x8 area. On a 30 degree day with help of a overhead fan it get up to 60. But must have a fan to move the air or I notice the area around heater warms up and shuts fan off early. Have heard about the temp wire being moved outside of heater may try that. Once the max temp you set is reached it does want to cycle on and off constantly. I just turn it off. It’s extremely nice to have. I haven’t seen a electric bill yet or used it more than a couple of hours aday. It’s definitely a 8 guage wire and 40 amp install. Im happy . |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this 3 phase |
Answer: | No It is not 3 phase, but it is 220 volts and not 115 volts, to wire it it needs two hot wires and a ground, I said ground, being AC current the two hot wires alternately act as a neutral. With 115 volts you would need one hot wire, one neutral wire, and a ground wire. This furnace will work on 220 volts only. |
Question: | What's the BTU output |
Answer: | Manual says 21,311 to 25,589 BTU per hour. |
Question: | I have a 28x32 garage with 10 foot ceilings. Side walls are insulated and drywalled and ceilings are just drywalled. With this work in there |
Answer: | I have this heater in my garage which is 40 x 30 feet with 12 foot ceiling. The walls are cement block which are sand insulated.this heater does a great job in my garage. It heats up quickly and well controlled heat temps. Would not trade it for any other kind of heat or heater. I give it a high rating and am a very satisfied customer. |
Question: | How many amp service breaker does this need ? Is 20 Amp service okay |
Answer: | This is not a subject of opinion; it is a very specific matter, lest one burn to death in a fire. Whatever or whomever suggests anything else, is dead wrong! Ohm's Law is a fundamental law of physics, and the NEC governs everything! Amperage is calculated by dividing Wattage of the appliance by manufacturer's stated Voltage supply. Period. Street voltage can run from 220 to 240, so always go with the higher, and the current must never exceed the breaker, or it will do its job and break to prevent overload. 10,000 Watts divided by 240 Volts equals 41.6 Amps. This unit requires a 50 Amp breaker. Wire size is determined by load, length and material of the conductor. #6 AWG copper or #4 AWG will serve up to 165 feet with an NEC maximum allowance of 3% voltage drop from the source. A longer run will require #4 and #3 respectively. One CANNOT use any such thing as a 30 Amp or 40 Amp conductor or breaker! |
