Answer:	I figure about 14-16 inches. 12-inch stove-length wood is too short to span between the horizontal 2x4's, but not by much. I usually cut a bunch of longer pieces for the bottom layer, to span the 2x4's, and then stack my 12-inch stove-length pieces on top of that "base."

But the 2 2x4's at bottom are close enough to hold a 12" piece but I might not stack to 4ft high as a traditional rick would be as the stack would be unstable with that short of wood but not really a wood rack issue more of a wood length issue.
