13 best wood burning inserts

Wood-burning inserts are heating appliances designed to be retrofitted into existing fireplaces or masonry chimneys. They offer an efficient and environmentally friendly way to heat your home using wood as a fuel source. Here's what you need to know about wood-burning inserts:

  1. Purpose: Wood-burning inserts are used to convert traditional, open-burning fireplaces into more efficient heating systems. They fit directly into the existing fireplace and use a closed combustion system, which improves heat output and reduces heat loss through the chimney.

  2. Efficiency: These inserts are highly efficient at heating because they have sealed doors and combustion chambers. This design prevents warm air from escaping up the chimney and ensures that more heat is radiated into the living space.

  3. Emissions: Wood-burning inserts are typically designed to meet or exceed environmental standards for emissions. Many use advanced combustion technology to burn wood cleanly and efficiently, producing minimal smoke and particulate matter.

  4. Fuel: Wood is the primary fuel source for these inserts. They can burn logs, wood pellets, or other forms of wood fuel. It's important to use properly seasoned and dry wood to ensure efficient combustion and reduce creosote buildup in the chimney.

  5. Installation: Installing a wood-burning insert typically requires a professional. It involves fitting the insert into the existing fireplace and connecting it to the chimney flue. Proper installation is crucial for safety and performance.

  6. Heat Output: The heat output of a wood-burning insert varies depending on its size and design. Some inserts are capable of heating a single room, while others can provide enough heat to warm an entire home when used in conjunction with a blower or a duct system.

  7. Blowers and Fans: Many wood-burning inserts come with blowers or fans that help distribute heat more evenly throughout the room or house. This can improve overall heating efficiency.

  8. Aesthetics: Wood-burning inserts often feature decorative doors and glass panels that allow you to enjoy the ambiance of a fire while benefiting from efficient heating.

  9. Safety Features: Inserts are equipped with safety features, such as heat shields, to prevent overheating and protect nearby walls and flooring. Some models also have automatic shutdown mechanisms for added safety.

  10. Chimney Maintenance: Even though wood-burning inserts produce less creosote than open fireplaces, regular chimney maintenance is still necessary to prevent buildup and ensure safe operation. Annual inspections and cleanings are recommended.

  11. Cost: The cost of wood-burning inserts varies depending on the brand, size, features, and installation requirements. While they can be an upfront investment, they can lead to long-term energy savings.

  12. Regulations: Be aware of local and regional regulations regarding wood-burning appliances. Some areas have restrictions on the use of wood-burning inserts due to air quality concerns.

Wood-burning inserts can be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to heat your home while enjoying the warmth and ambiance of a real fire. However, it's essential to choose the right size and type of insert for your specific needs and to have it professionally installed for safe and efficient operation.

User questions & answers

Question: Most peiiet bags are 40 lbs. how many times will a 40 lbs. bag fill the basket
Answer: I do 3 to 3.5 fill ups per bag, I have a thermometer on my stove, once it drops down to say just below 200 I refill, it catches and refires usually within the hour. It does require a bit more babysitting then the firewood but its much cleaner and simple to clean up with an ash vac.
Question: If I had a stainless steel basket with enough spacing, do you think it would do as a test
Answer: I'm not sure about your question either. I only used it one time and it was so bulky and hard to maneuver. I couldn't fill it with pellets without taking all afternoon. I ended up getting a stainless steel sheet (food grade) with air holes, 12"X24" that I'd lay flat over the ash pan and wood great. I needed to remain mindful for several reasons: 1. Pellets burn hotter than wood and they burn different so make sure you try small pellet fires at first until you get the hang of them. 2. EXPLOSIONS - This scared me a number of times. I could avoid explosions if I put pellets on the front side of the stove one time and the back side the next. If there was any size portion of pellets burning or red hot (with or without the flame) I learned to put the pellets next too and not on top. If I put 'new' pellets on hot ones they'd smolder and then there would be an explosion some of with were loud and dangerous. The basket looked great on paper and didn't work in my stove.
Question: do you lite the pellets on top or on the bottom
Answer: You can use gel fire starter by placing on top of pellets. We use a layer of pellets...3 pieces of FatWood in a teepee fashion...surrounded by more pellets. We don't like the gel.
Question: How often does it need to refilled
Answer: I would fill it every four hours or so. The main need was to keep the box cleaned out. Over all I was pleased with it.

User questions & answers

Question: Hiw do I attach top plate to 8x8 terra cotta that protrudes from the chimney
Answer: You don’t need a damper, it’s built in to the stove
Question: I would like to put a damper in the pipe do you sell one that will work for this
Answer: Hello, This is only to be used inside a masonry chimney to reline the chimney. If you need to extend your chimney through an attic and above the roof, you would need to use Class A chimney pipe (which we do offer). Class A chimney pipe has a 2" clearance to combustibles. Rockford Chimney Supply
Question: Can this be used from the attic to the roof instead stove pipe
Answer: Insulating is always recommended as it reduces the amount of creosote buildup in the flue and keeps the flue gases hot. It is not required by code if you have a brick and masonry chimney with clay flue tiles.
Question: do you need to insulate
Answer: Same as the old one.

Product features

Use Inside or Out

Whether you want to spruce up your outdoor fire pit or your indoor fireplace, these are the logs for you.

Our ceramic fiber logs are versatile. They go great in an old school fire pit, a modern fire table with lava rock or glass, or an indoor gas fireplace.

Before switching anything - Gas logs included - with any indoor fireplace, PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK WITH A LOCAL EXPERT. There are 100's, if not 1000's of variations of fireplaces and fire codes across the USA and it is very important that you proceed with caution when it comes to lighting a fire in your home.

Individual Logs Give You Individual Freedom

Arrange your logs based on your needs. You receive 10 logs with 5 different designs to allow you to use your creativity. Stack the logs in an orderly fashion or mimic nature by placing them at random.

Be sure to leave at least 1.5 inches between the logs and your gas orafices. Blocking these orafices is what causes incomplete gas combustion which can lead to odors, carbon buildup (Which then becomes soot), or other damage.

Also, be sure that your fireplace is clean before using because any unburned organic material will also combust and create particles.

User questions & answers

Question: makes a clicking noise while running like a wheel turning, anyone else hear this on theirs
Answer: Mine is nearly 100% quiet. Actually, I'm very pleased with it's noise level. Do you only hear it when heat is on, or when the "flames" are on? There is a turning wheel that simulates the flames
Question: I want to mount it on the wall at floor level, then build a fireplace surround, so thait looks like a real fireplace. Does it need intake air from r
Answer: Since the insert has a heating option you do need to ensure the wall is properly ventilated and insulated with heat-resistant insulation to prevent heat buildup from the heater and the cabinet getting too hot, which could cause the unit to "burn out" or cause a fire. As with the range top for a stove, you should have some type of vent installed above the unit to allow any heat from the unit to escape the wall.
Question: Can you recess this fireplace in to cabinetry
Answer: I recessed mine in a stone surround. I live in Florida, so don't really use it for heating.
Question: What is framing opening size? sounds like it has a 1 inch lip? so maybe 34x26-Does it screw in? rest on bottom? how are you securing it in
Answer: The framing opening size is the opening you wish to install the insert into. A fireplace is constructed in two ways. The old traditional way is the hearth (the inside of the fireplace) is made of all brick where air is taken from the room and sent up the chimney with the ash and smoke. The other way is like mine and that is there is a 1/8th inch thick steel insert inside the fireplace that covers all the walls with the special fire bricks installed for the floor. It also requires vents for airflow in the brick facing of the fireplace that would have to be filled in if you use the insert to prevent loss of room air up the chimney. Some people wish to install the insert inside an existing wall and build a mantle around the insert. You must measure you opening correctly or you will get the wrong model insert and have to return it for the correct one, which takes additional time from the final result. Some hearths are even with the floor or raised ledge (because some fireplaces are set a foot or so above the main floor) while some hearths, like mine, has a 1" or 2" inch ledge (difference) between the surface to the front of the fireplace and the actual floor of the hearth. My insert fit perfectly from the ledge built in front of my fireplace to the top of the opening with no gap while I had a 2" inch gap to each side of the insert. I drilled into the brick, used 3 1/2" inch concrete screws, cut a recess hole in the wood so the screws would not protrude from the wood, and screwed the wood to the brick on each side and the bottom (to fill that 2" inch drop to the hearth floor), and then used door/window caulking to fill in all gaps between the wood and the surrounding surface. I then purchased the special insulation used for a fireplace in case the cabinet to the insert gets hot while using the heater and installed it on all corners so when I pushed the insert in the insulation rested against the back of the cabinet facing thereby insulating the gap around the cabinet. The 2x4 I installed to fill the lip between the hearth floor and the ledge permitted the base of the cabinet to rest on a solid surface. Before I installed that 2x4 I inserted the insert and the cabinet base would tilt slightly outward because there was not a flat surface for the base to rest on. I also removed the handles so I would not have any unnecessary gap to each side of the cabinet. Further, since I have an electrical outlet 5 feet to the left of my fireplace, I cut out the wall, drilled through the wood, brick, cement, and steel, installed an electrical wire, and installed an outlet to the upper rear of the hearth so the cabinet would not be obstructed when I inserted it and I could plug in the unit to hid the cord. You do not need any mounting brackets, screws, or other material to secure or mount the cabinet into an opening whether it is a fireplace or a wall as long as the opening is square and level.

User questions & answers

Question: What is size
Answer: 2-1/2 inches in diameter
Question: Will this work for a Jotel 500 wood stove
Answer: The short answer is yes as I have one sitting on on top of my Jotel woodstove. Having said that, it should only be used as a rough (very rough) guideline and not as a precise scientific instrument. Reasons being: - different wood burns at different temperature and produce different amount/level of BTU - different wood has different level of pitch and should be monitored differently - different location on the stove top can have greatly different temperature depending where the burning log is placed - different stove have different chracteristics in heat discipation There is no substitute for observing how your woodstove operates in conjunction with creosote collected on your chimney stack. It's usefulness is its ability to give you a baseline (as far as temperature goes) for future observation and reference in order to find out how to operate your stove in the optimum wy.
Question: Why is best zone 400f-650f, when most other termometers out there are 300f-600f
Answer: The best burn temps are a best guess and depend more on the stove manufacturers specific recommendations. However this particular thermometer is flawed. The indicator needle drags and sticks, leading to inaccurate readings.
Question: Will this work on a stove with a ceramic top
Answer: i don't see why not. It just measures the surface temperature of the object you put it on.
