14 best wood burning furnaces

Wood burning furnaces are heating appliances that use wood as a fuel source to generate heat for residential or commercial spaces. These furnaces are often used as an alternative to traditional heating methods, such as gas or electric heaters, and can be an efficient and cost-effective way to heat a home. Here are some key points to know about wood burning furnaces:

  1. Fuel Source: Wood burning furnaces require firewood or wood pellets as their primary fuel source. The type of wood used can affect the efficiency and heat output of the furnace.

  2. Efficiency: Modern wood burning furnaces are designed to be highly efficient, meaning they can extract a significant amount of heat from the wood. High-efficiency models may have features like secondary combustion chambers and air circulation systems to maximize heat output while minimizing emissions.

  3. Heating Capacity: Wood burning furnaces come in various sizes and heating capacities to suit different needs. Larger furnaces can heat larger areas or even an entire home, while smaller models are suitable for smaller spaces or as supplementary heating sources.

  4. Installation: Proper installation is crucial for the safe and efficient operation of a wood burning furnace. This typically involves connecting the furnace to a chimney or vent system to ensure that smoke and gases are properly vented outside.

  5. Chimney Caps: Chimney caps are accessories that are often used in conjunction with wood burning furnaces. They are installed at the top of the chimney to prevent rain, debris, and animals from entering, while still allowing smoke and gases to exit.

  6. Emissions: Wood burning furnaces can produce emissions, including particulate matter and creosote buildup in the chimney. It's important to use dry, well-seasoned wood and perform regular maintenance to minimize emissions and reduce the risk of chimney fires.

  7. Safety: Safety is paramount when using wood burning furnaces. This includes proper installation, regular maintenance, and adhering to safety guidelines to prevent fires and carbon monoxide buildup.

  8. Environmental Considerations: Wood burning can be considered a renewable and carbon-neutral source of heat when managed sustainably. However, it's essential to use certified wood stoves and furnaces that meet emission standards to minimize environmental impact.

  9. Regulations: Wood burning furnaces are subject to regulations and emissions standards that vary by location. It's important to check local codes and regulations before installing or using a wood burning furnace to ensure compliance.

  10. Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the chimney, inspecting the furnace, and ensuring proper airflow, is essential to keep a wood burning furnace operating efficiently and safely.

Wood burning furnaces can provide efficient and economical heating options, but they require careful management and maintenance to operate safely and responsibly. When considering the installation of a wood burning furnace, it's advisable to consult with a professional to ensure that the system is installed correctly and complies with local regulations.

HY-C MH-6R Magic Heat Bottom Crimp Heat Reclaimer for Use with Wood Burning Appliances, UL Listed, Fits 6" Single Wall Chimney Pipe

HY-C

Based on 236 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Magic Heat is the only UL listed heat reclaimer on the market. Magic Heat reclaims up to 30% of lost heat form your heating appliance and distributes it into your home using only .31 amp of power, roughly equivalent to a 40 watt lightbulb. Magic Heat is designed for heating appliances with inside flue temperatures exceeding 350 degrees and surface temperatures of the single wall pipe below the Magic Heat exceeding 280 degrees. The bottom crimp design makes this unit ideal for wood burning heating applications by containing any creosote within the chimney. A toggle switch allows the 225 CFM fan to operate in two modes, either run continuously or a pre-set thermostat automatically turns the blower fan on when the Magic Heat casing reaches 150 degrees and off at 120 degrees. Magic Heat is easy to install and must be installed between 12 and 24 inches from the appliance flue outlet using single wall connector pipe. How it works: As hot flue gases travel from your heating appliance upward through the flu, they heat the transfer tubes in the inner case. Fresh room air enters thru the back vents and is heated while traveling through the transfer tubes. The 225 CFM fan pushes out the warmed air through the tubes and into your home reclaiming up to 30,000 British Thermal Units (BTU) of lost heat. Flue gases are not restricted and continue up your chimney. Magic Heat is available in 6", 7" and 8" pipe diameters for wood, oil/coal or natural gas burning heating appliances. Manufactured in the USA.

  • Only UL listed heat reclaimer on the market. Reclaims up to 30% of otherwise lost heat going up your chimney and distributes it into your home.
  • Crimp down configuration is designed for use with wood burning heating applications with inside flue temperatures exceeding 350 degrees and surface temperatures of the single wall pipe below the Magic Heat exceeding 280 degrees.
  • Easy to install. Fits 6" flue diameter. Built in soot scraper cleans tubes internally allowing for maximum heat transfer.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use stove if the power goes out
Answer: It's meant to be programmed to a garage door. Doesn't interfere with any other programmed opener. Easy directions. I programmed mine to daughters 2 car garage, different codes for each door...do 1 at a time per directions.
Question: Can I mount unit closer than 12” to top of wood stove
Answer: Multibutton transmitter (remote control). Compatible with all Overhead Door CodeDodger (abbreviation: CD. CD/A or CD/B) and Genie Intellicode garage door openers.
Question: Does this work best with non-catalytic stoves
Answer: Yes, purchased a new OCDTR-3 remote a couple months ago for my Overhead Door OCG550 Python which was installed in 1998. Please note that as mentioned on-line by others, only the far right hand button on the remote operates the door but that's good enough for me!
Question: Do you ever have to take the unit off to clean? Or is that middle knob that pulls in & out, does the cleaning for you
Answer: If it is an Overhead Model door and has a programmable button on the back of the motor it should work. I can't guarantee it 100% but it should work.

Product features

Easy Installation

The Serenity stove requires very little assembly compared to other stoves. Its compact design allows it to fit into the smallest of spaces. For the Do-It-Yourselfer installation is easy. The manual explains the installation process. Installation generally takes less than two hours. The Castle Pellet Stove is mobile home approved and EPA certified to comply with state and local regulations in most areas. There’s no need to waste dollars on a chimney or flute as this unit can be direct vented.

Programmable Controller

Adjust your heating needs to your lifestyle. The Serenity features a 24-hour programmable controller for each day of the week that has the ability to cycle on and off and adjust to a built-in thermostat depending on when heat is needed. The house can be warm when you wake up and when you come home from work, while remaining cooler during the day and at night while you sleep. Along with calendar and time based heating options, you can also set a local thermostat or manually set it on one of the five burn levels.

Easy Clean

Designed with convenience and ease in mind. All pellet stoves need to be cleaned; most have hard to reach chambers that build up ash that impairs the stoves ability to transfer heat. There’s no need to remove panels or disassemble parts to clean. Simply dump the easy-to-access firepot and ash pan, and sweep out the exhaust pipe.

High Efficiency

Heat more with less fuel. The innovative heat exchanger in the Castle Serenity was modeled after the fins on air-cooled engines, which provides for 2.5 square feet of additional surface area for maximum thermal exchange in a compact space. The design is both unique and functional because it allows the inside of the stove to be smooth for easy cleaning and minimal ash build up, while exchanging an incredible amount of heat produced by the burning wood pellets. While other stoves are blowing your hard earned dollars outside, the Serenity stove keeps all of your warmth inside.

User questions & answers

Question: Where are the holes located on the motor for the oil
Answer: Hi Janice, we have this grate. There is 4" of clearance. We don't have gas so I couldnt say if that provides enough clearance for your needs.
Question: Installed couple weeks ago. I just notice the fan is not working. Is there a switch
Answer: There is about 3 1/2" clear under the metal running side to side, about 4 3/4" to the top of the metal the wood sits on, about 9" to the top of the front tines holding the wood in. I think the back tines are about the same, but with it full of wood for the next fire, I can't see them to be sure.
Question: Do you think it will work on a oil drip furnace by nestor martin
Answer: Yes. of course if power is out the fan is not gonna work.
Question: Where is this made? you would think us stove products would be made in the u.s. but i think it is made in china
Answer: Our UL approved installation calls for at gap, between the top of the stove and the bottom of the Magic Heat, of between 12” and 24”. (See manual) Too small a gap would expose the electrical components, such as the thermostat, to potentially too much heat, and ruin them.

Question: Is the door sold separately or what
Answer: There is a thermostatically controlled switch inside of the box. All you have to do is plug it in and build a fire, once the temperature gets high enough it should kick on automatically. If you start noticing a rattling sound after a while, there is an allen screw that holds the blade on the shaft of the motor. You can remove the side panel and tighten it up. I had to do that to mine.
Question: Add states fuel is “gas” and list propane & kerosene. can it be converted to natural gas ? also does the igniter come with the kit
Answer: As long as the pipe size is the same on the oil stove and it burns clean, I believe it would be fine to use. Keep in mind there isn't a way to access the inside of the heat reclaimer to clean build-up except through the stove pipe so you might want to use a section of telescoping pipe to make it easier on yourself.
Question: Does it come with both barrels
Answer: I have no idea where it is made. All that I know is that mine was UL listed

User questions & answers

Question: Can the flame feature be turned off for use at night in a bedroom (so the room stays dark
Answer: Yes, the moving flame feature can be turned off. The logs maintain a very slight glow, that does not disrupt sleep if you wake up in the middle of the night. It's awesome.
Question: What kind of functionality does the remote have? Does it have a timer to turn on
Answer: The remote has four function buttons: power; flame setting; temperature; timer. The flame height can be adjusted from 1 to 5; level 1 is lighted embers, level 1 is a low flame, etc. The temperature can be set in increments of 2 degress from 62F to 82F. The remote will allow you to see what the temperature is set at, but you have to adjust it manually from the control panel. The timer can be set to turn the unit off, but not on. It starts at 30 minutes and increases in hourly intervals from 1 hour to 9 hours. Unlike the temperature, the timer can be set with the remote. Your local hardware store might have a timer you could attach to it to turn it on automatically. I don't know that for a fact, but I don't see why it wouldn't operate similarly to any other electrical appliance that can be used with a timer.
Question: How much does it cost per hour to run
Answer: It's a very good and responsible question, and yes, there is a way to answer it. It requires you check your electric bill and so some math, but you really only have to do this once. You're going to calculate how much you pay per kilowatt hour (kWh) which really is just how much it costs to run any electrical item in your home for each 1,000 watts. STEP 1: Find your most recent electric bill, look for any charges that are based on killowatt hours (kWh). For example... I live in NYC, and my probably outrageous bill had (Supply @9.1811 cents per kWh) + (Delivery @12.0324 cents per kWh) + (Clean Energy Benefit @ 0.6811 per kWh). I also note that Sales Tax is 4.5% and write all these down. STEP 2: Add them all up then apply sales tax. So for my bill, I get (9.1811) + (12.0324) + (0.6811) = 21.8946 cents per kWh. To factor in the Sales Tax of 4.5%, I calculate (21.8946) * (1.045) = 22.87986 cents per kWh. I round this up to 23 cents to make it easy, so that means it costs me 23 cents per hour to run a 1,000 watt appliance. STEP 3: Multiply your hourly cost by this appliance's wattage. The details indicate this is heater is 120 Volts at 12.5 Amps. To calculate watts is just (volts) * (amps). So (120 volts) * (12.5 amps) = **1,500 watts**. NOTE: this is very typical for major appliances such as air conditioners, space heaters and even running a clothes iron. With that in hand, multiply the kWh cost from STEP 2 by the wattage of this heater. So for me, since it costs me 23 cents per kWh to run something, that means at 1,500 watts it would cost me (23 cents * 1.5) = 34.5 cents to run this heater every hour. Yes, I rounded up a bit earlier (my real cost is 34.31979), but I like to overestimate just a little to play it safe. STEP 4: Multiply your cost to run this hourly by how many hours you might run it. This is where it gets very controversial because I think most people do not understand their own energy costs or usage and get a shock (no pun intended) from their electric bill. Let's say I run this heater 6 hours per day in a 30 day month. That's 180 hours * 34.5 cents per kWh = $62.10 just to run this one heater. STEP 5: Think about how you're heating your home. Remember that 1,500 watts is VERY common for major appliances as noted above, and other smaller heaters might be around the same, or possibly 1,000 watts. Let's say you're a family with a space heater in each room to keep people warm. Let's imagine those space heaters were 1,000 watts each. That means at 3,000 watts, you'd be paying DOUBLE in electrical costs instead of just having the family huddle together near this large heater in the living room. Summary: Do some due diligence and check your electric bill charges per kWh, then check the wattage of each heating appliance and do some simple math according to many electrical appliances you are running to heat your home. This exercise seriously shouldn't take too long to do, and you can use this same method to understand what it costs for air conditioning in the summer, and even how much it costs to run giant flat screen TVs or computers. Though for those panels it's far less... my 55" flat screen TV runs at 250 watts max, and my computer about 300 watts with monitor, computer and max gaming settings. Heating and air conditioning are what crush your electric bill, so do this and you'll see how valuable it is to have one large machine doing heating/cooling for a large area rather than multiple individual ones. PS: I haven't even bought this yet, but I wanted to help educate the person who asked the question, because this is a VERY important thing that so many people don't do, and I don't like seeing people throw money away. IMO, this is a very good purchase just for saving on electrical costs.
Question: is it noisy
Answer: Yes the machine is noisy. When the heat is on there is a low drone which isn't bad and is to be expected. The noise from the heater isnt the problem. It's when the flames and heater are on but the heat kicks off bc the room is at the desired temperature. At this point the flames make a very loud and annoying sound. If you lower the flames to the lowest setting this noise too will go away.

User questions & answers

Question: After 2 weeks, our fan discontinued to work. i need to return it. please give me an address. inferior product. stove temp below 240 degrees. sev
Answer: That happened to me after 2 months also. I contacted customer service Amazon and it was replaced
Question: Will these work on a wood stove insert
Answer: It should work as long as there is enough clearance to sit the fan on TOP of the stove so that the fan can blow the heat into the room. See the fan dimensions listed in the details. Note that this fan does not blow air with the force of an electric fan, but it works well... even when the electricity is out or where an electric fan cannot be used (like on top of a hot stove). It is worth it IMHO. I use it on top of my kerosene heater.
Question: How would one go about making it so the fan doesn't get overheated since my woodstove top runs on an average of 700 degrees
Answer: The fan doesn’t over heat. There’s no motor or anything to overheat. I’ve got a buck stove & it works fine on mine & my wood burner stove gets. Over 700 degrees
Question: Whats the cfm on this
Answer: A less-than-technical answer is that I'm not sure it will move a cubic foot in a minute! I don't feel any discernible air movement from 3' away, even when my stove's top is @ 600 degrees. After a month or so I've come to think of it as a cool looking little whatnot that sits on my woodstove....

Question: Can you use it for a rain hood on top of a house for the furnace
Answer: Fireplace fan can start working already when the fan is heated to 122 F (50 C) and the heat powered fan operates perfectly when he reaches a temperature of 240 F.
