11 best bed boards
Bed boards, also known as bunkie boards or platform boards, are important components in bedroom furniture that play a crucial role in supporting mattresses and enhancing sleep comfort. Here is what you need to know about bed boards:
Purpose: Bed boards are designed to provide a solid, flat surface for a mattress to rest on within a bed frame. They serve to evenly distribute the weight of the mattress and sleeper, preventing sagging and ensuring proper support.
Material: Bed boards can be made from various materials, including solid wood, plywood, particleboard, or even metal. The choice of material can impact the board's durability and firmness.
Thickness: Bed boards come in various thicknesses, typically ranging from around 0.5 inches to 2 inches. The thickness you choose can affect the overall feel and firmness of your mattress.
Size: Bed boards are available in different sizes to match standard mattress dimensions. Be sure to select a bed board that corresponds to the size of your mattress, whether it's twin, full, queen, king, or another size.
Installation: Installing a bed board is a straightforward process. You place it directly on top of the bed frame's slats or support system, and then position your mattress on top of the board. Some bed boards may come with fabric covers or non-slip features to prevent the mattress from shifting.
Benefits:
- Enhanced Mattress Support: Bed boards provide a stable and even surface, reducing the risk of mattress sagging and improving support for your body.
- Prolonged Mattress Lifespan: By minimizing wear and tear on the mattress, bed boards can extend its longevity.
- Motion Isolation: Bed boards can help reduce motion transfer, making it less likely for movements on one side of the bed to disturb a partner on the other side.
Compatibility: Bed boards are generally compatible with a variety of bed frames, including platform beds, slatted beds, and traditional box spring beds. They can be used with different types of mattresses, such as memory foam, innerspring, and hybrid mattresses.
Cost: The cost of a bed board varies depending on factors like material, thickness, and brand. Prices typically range from $50 to $200 or more, making them a relatively affordable addition to your bedroom setup.
In summary, bed boards are essential components in bedroom furniture that provide a solid foundation for mattresses. They offer improved support, extend mattress lifespan, and can enhance sleep quality by ensuring a stable and comfortable sleeping surface. When selecting a bed board, consider factors like size, material, and thickness to meet your specific sleep needs.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this be good for a bunk bed? Instead of a boxspring so the kids cant feel the bars |
Answer: | I don't know. This has worked well between mattress and box springs on an ancient twin bed. However, it might not be sturdy enough to be effective on a bunk bed without springs. It seems that a single slab of thin plywood would be better. There are staples holding these pieces together and, I have snagged a fingernail occasionally when making the bed. Good product for me, maybe not for you. |
Question: | Is one folding bed board enough support for a queen or do I need two |
Answer: | It’s the right size for a twin or twin XL . For a Queen size you need 2. |
Question: | Does this stop it from sinking in and throwing me off the bed |
Answer: | Depending on your weight it might. I bought it for our fold out couch and it worked for a week before the board cracked. My son (170 lbs) kneeled on the edge of couch and it snapped the corner of the board off :( it’s made of partical board and the strapes are held in place with staples. |
Question: | Can this product be used with a sleeper sofa? I'm trying to make our sleeper sofa as comfortable as possible |
Answer: | I am sure it would. You could easily fold it up and store behind the sofa when not being used as a sleeper. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What tools are needed for assembly |
Answer: | yes you can. |
Question: | can I use this directly on the floor for a low profile king bed frame |
Answer: | If you are short it might be too tall. I am heavier than you but am 5 feet 2 inches tall. The arm rests are great and the back support is great - it's the reason I bought the chair - but I have to set a block of wood on the ground to set my feet on because the chair is a little too tall for me and without the block the edge of the chair cuts uncomfortably into the backs of my legs. If you are 5 ft 4 in or taller you probably would be fine. I work in the chair 10 hours a day and otherwise find it very comfortable. I like the mesh back because I live in a hot climate and that helps to keep things cool. |
Question: | Will this fit inside of a bed frame? Would like to replace my slats with this |
Answer: | 250 LBS |
Question: | How far apart.the the slats |
Answer: | low is 17" , high is 23" |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this replace cheap wooden slats on a wooden queen platform bed that already has a steel center beam installed |
Answer: | Yes and... No. You need to read the dimensions carefully. I ordered this item after reading the answer to this question, under the impression that it would be a simple replacement. It wasn't. That's because "Queen size" (or in my case "twin size" and "full size") is apparently a vague descriptor. The steel slats came about an inch short, so I had to spend a few hours reframing the bed, drilling, screwing. It was a pleasant weekend project, I suppose. These slats are excellent. |
Question: | Could this fit on a basic metal bed frame and take the place of a box spring? It is for my daughter and i don't want it to be too tall for her |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | Can this be use with bed frame that doesn't use a box spring |
Answer: | Yes, that is why I bought the frame. Got rid of the box spring |
Question: | what is the space between the steel slats |
Answer: | About 5". If you are concerned because there is space between the slats and it isn't solid, I use this bunkie board with a cheap foam mattress and haven't had any issues (daily use). |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a sinus plataform 3 years ago how I know is this work my frame don’t have a hock for a headboard |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. When the battery back-up becomes weak, the Smoke Alarm will chirp about once a minute (the low battery warning). This warning should last 7 days, but you should replace the battery immediately to continue your protection. |
Question: | Where are the screws for connecting the legs to the headboard? They aren’t in the box that I can see |
Answer: | Not that I know of. This is a combo smoke detector and Carbon Monoxide alarm itself. Not sure what z-wave is...? |
Question: | Is this bright color accurate even though it says it comes in taupe? I want something that looks more like ivory - would it be as bright as shown |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. The wiring for these detectors is the same; you would need to change the mounting bracket. Please be sure to check your local/state fire regulations for ionization alarms. |
Question: | Does this come with required hardware for assembly? (Nuts & Bolts |
Answer: | Yes, they are different. 1. Check your building codes, but some levels of remodeling or new construction may require hardwired interconnected smoke detectors/carbon monoxide detectors. 2. Yes, they work even when the power goes out. That is the reason for the battery. 3. I would suggest that when you replace the battery in one, replace the battery in every unit. Mine always seem to need replacing when I am out-of-town and this does not make my wife very happy, nor our dog, Rusty. Neither like the chirping. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How far apart are the slats? I'm looking for a base for a Casper mattress |
Answer: | There are quite a few slats on this bed. I was actually surprised at how many were included. It should work with any mattress easily. |
Question: | Will this work with a 6" memory foam mattress? I need to put it on a platform bed to stop it from sagging |
Answer: | Our box springs are designed for any style memory foam, spring and/or hybrid mattresses. They are recommended to be used with a 6" mattress or thicker. |
Question: | Does this require center support |
Answer: | We recommend a frame that does provide a center support. If your frame have a lip all around the box spring, that will work just fine as well. |
Question: | Does it squeak or make any noise when moving around on the bed |
Answer: | I've had it about 2-3 years, banged it around in two different moves, had heftier guests use it, and it has never squeaked. As long as you assemble it correctly and don't leave screws loose it's not an issue. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can these slats be cut on one side? My bed is 35", not the standard |
Answer: | Yes. My husband had to do that with ours to fit my son’s bed. |
Question: | What kind of wood? Treated or not |
Answer: | They are made of pine/spruce (soft wood). They are furring strips that can commonly be found at Home Depot, Lowes, or any lumber yard across the country. |
Question: | Are they curved? Or flat |
Answer: | They're flat. |
Question: | Do I need to attach to the bed like regular slats to avoid slippage |
Answer: | Ours just sat on top of the lips inside the side rails, it was a tight fit and the slats did not move. But I would advise against buying this product. The boards used in ours were so weak that a 30lb 4yo was able to break them just jumping once on the mattress. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be placed between mattress & boxspring |
Answer: | The base is very heavy so that it can support big folks. The seat is also heavy. Barring that it is just like assembling any office-type chair. I think everything on this chair is assembled with a single hex key that it provided. It is short and difficult to tighten the bolts with, so I used my own long hex key of the same size. Not a biggie at all. You install the hydraulic post to the base, the casters pretty much just pop in. The seat goes on the post. I think you have to mount the post socket to the seat base and that it was a lot of screws and it took some grunt to get that done, but it is simple. Once you have a rolling base with a seat you install the back and arms. It took me about 45 minutes, and I went intentionally slowly to make sure I did it right. I am fat and did not want to have this collapse, possibly hurting me, due to my not having been very thorough. I have had this now for well over a year and it has a slight wobble in the seat, probably the post hole wallowing out over time. It started doing this soon after I set up the chair and has never gotten any worse. I am very pleased with this chair. It is the first one like this that I have owned that was not garbage or too weak to hold me. I never worry about it breaking. I spend about an hour or two in it just about every day. It is still comfortable. The assembly is not difficult, but the installation of some of the hex head cap bolts required some strength. If you have enough strength to turn about 20 tight bolts this is easy to assemble. If not, perhaps you need a helper with some forearm strength. I am 52 and have fairly strong arms, but I am not a 20-something anymore. I still got it done. If you get this, whether you have a friend assemble it or you do it yourself, you will like this chair. I am glad I spent the money on it. |
Question: | Is the height for the regular and heavy duty board still 0.75 inches |
Answer: | I have submitted a correction request to Amazon - the link on the page for the chair is wrong. The correct warranty is here: https://www.officestar.net/sys/scr/incLoadDoc.asp?type=warranty&id=100051 Not only does the warranty go up to 400 lbs, but they have a lifetime warranty on the pneumatic cylinder, control mechanism, base and casters. I called the manufacturer and within 20 seconds they told me what I needed to email them to get a free replacement cylinder and mechanism. |
Question: | What is the distance between the slats |
Answer: | I am also 6'6" and I spend all day programming in this chair and it supports very well. The seat is wider and longer (to support upper leg better). The chair has a lumbar support 'pillow(?)' thing that you can see through the mesh backing in the picture and it is adjustable up and down. |
Question: | What is the difference between the regular and heavy duty slats? I see the dimensions are the same, but the heavy duty weigh more. How is this |
Answer: | Where the arms are the width is 22 inches. I know this is all there is to this question but I wanted to add something. My husband and I are both large people and this chair has been almost perfect for us. We love it! I say 'almost perfect' because about 6 months after we got it the left arm rest developed a crack toward the inside and began to actually come apart. I contacted the manufacturer, filled out some paper work and within days we had a replacement with no charge of any kind. The customer service was perfect. I would highly recommend this chair. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where can I get center supports |
Answer: | Of course! My dog is injured and we had to dis assemble our queen bed frame. We put the mattress & box spring directly on the floor. Awful for us! Great for the dog BUT this little bit of support makes a huge difference in the feel of our mattresses. No longer smushy w/o the bed frame and still low enough to floor for the pooch. |
Question: | My king bed is 74” wide. Will this still work |
Answer: | Be sure to measure your current bed frame first. I tried to put this inside my bed frame, but this bunkie board wasn't wide enough to reach the side supports. So it is useless to me, unless I buy some wood from home depot and try to widen the side supports in my current bed frame. |
Question: | This mayton item asin b08qcmfjbv and mayton item asin b08l7vdjc8 have identical descriptions. what's the difference |
Answer: | I’ve seen a review stating 3.5”. What’s the exact distance between the slats in the newest revision that’s shipping right now as of March/April 2018? |

User questions & answers
Question: | If you want to put the box spring on can you |
Answer: | I don't know Amber. I only bought the heavy duty which is .75. The product description is poor as it doesn't explain the difference. I just took my chances and am happy. Good luck.. |
Question: | Has anyone used this with a box spring |
Answer: | The slat spacing for the one I just received is 3 1/4 inches apart. I purchased the king sized regular one. I bought it because I thought the spacing was going to be under 3 inches... |
Question: | purchasing a memory foam mattress for this bed. What do I need to put between mattress and bed from to protect the mattress |
Answer: | They heavy duty has smaller distance between slats than the regular. About 1 inch less gap. So, heavy duty has more slats than the regular. |
Question: | Does it squeak during "fun/rough" activities |
