Answer: It does fully function while being connected to a non computer power source but be aware the battery will not charge and if you disconnect it from the power source the camera will turn off. I also found that if you are recording a video and the battery dies it will NOT save your video. To get around this you have to turn on the "seamless" option and the camera will auto save 1, 3 or 5 minute videos as a new file. The only problem with this is an hour video will turn into 60 separate clips. I experimented with this camera a lot to use as an expendable camera on high altitude balloons.
