12 best cricket powders
Cricket powder, also known as cricket flour or cricket protein powder, is a type of protein supplement made from dried and ground crickets. It has gained popularity in recent years as a sustainable and nutritionally rich source of protein. Here is some information about cricket powder:
1. Source: Cricket powder is primarily derived from crickets, specifically the Acheta domesticus species. These crickets are farmed specifically for human consumption. They are raised in controlled environments and undergo a process that involves cleaning, dehydration, and grinding to produce the powder.
2. Sustainability: One of the key advantages of cricket powder is its sustainability. Crickets are highly efficient in converting feed into protein, requiring significantly less water, land, and food compared to traditional livestock like cows or pigs. This makes cricket farming a more environmentally friendly option.
3. Nutritional Profile: Cricket powder is known for its impressive nutritional profile. It is a complete protein source, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids that the human body needs. In addition to protein, cricket powder also contains vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. It's a good source of B vitamins, particularly B12, as well as iron and zinc.
4. Allergen Considerations: Cricket powder is considered a safe and hypoallergenic source of protein. It is less likely to cause allergies compared to some other common protein sources like soy or whey. However, individuals with shellfish allergies may want to exercise caution, as crickets are arthropods and share some allergenic properties with shellfish.
5. Culinary Uses: Cricket powder can be used in a variety of culinary applications. It can be added to smoothies, protein shakes, baked goods (like muffins or protein bars), and savory dishes like soups and sauces. Its mild, nutty flavor makes it versatile and easy to incorporate into different recipes.
6. Protein Content: Cricket powder is typically rich in protein, with levels ranging from 50% to 70% protein by weight. This makes it a valuable protein source for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and those looking to supplement their diet with protein.
7. Environmental Benefits: Beyond its nutritional value, cricket powder's production has a lower environmental impact compared to traditional livestock farming. Cricket farming generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions and requires less water and land, making it a more sustainable choice.
8. Availability: Cricket powder is available in health food stores, online retailers, and specialized cricket protein product brands. It's important to choose products from reputable sources to ensure quality and safety.
In summary, cricket powder is a sustainable and nutritious source of protein that has gained popularity in the world of sports nutrition and health. It offers a range of health benefits while also contributing to environmentally friendly food production practices.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I mix this with my green shake |
Answer: | Yes the heat lamps are dimmable. I have four of them .I use them in my outside cats house when it's cold in the winter. He stays nice and comfortable since I can control the amount of heat. |
Question: | hi...do you mix with regular flour or simply substitute |
Answer: | Depends on what you are using it for.I have 2, one on each side of a 20 long tank and one side of my tank also has UTH pad to create a temperature gradient. As for heat output I would say it's right around 80 degrees at the distance it should be from the reptile. |
Question: | Are these free-range, cage free crickets? That's very important to me |
Answer: | I have both 60w and the higher wattage (100w?) and use the 60w for my eastern snake breeds. It doesn't seem to project much heat if you hold it over your hand, but in my 10gal glass terrariums, it provides enough heat per my thermo gun. Gets them into the 70s & low 80s, as needed. So maybe test it in action and see. |
Question: | Why would you eat cricket powder? It sounds gross but I'm asking genuinely. Plus, I like crickets and am not sure about the idea of this. Thoughts |
Answer: | Just one |

User questions & answers
Question: | What percentage of the protein is cricket powder protein? Half 3/4 or |
Answer: | This answer might make my high school algebra teacher proud. In one container of Chirps cricket power which weights in at 1 lb (or 454 g) I am assuming listening organic sprouted brown rice protein twice might be a typo on the list of ingredients Amazon has on there site so that makes eleven ingredients as follows: cricket protein, pea protein, organic sprouted brown rice protein, organic flaxseed protein, organic chia seed protein, tapioca flour, coconut palm sugar, Guar gum, Himalayan salt, stevia extract. The first seven of which are going to be the bulk of it; so best guess the cricket protein might account for twenty five percent 113 grams, pea protein twenty one percent 97 grams, sprouted brown rice protein eighteen percent 81 grams, flaxseed protein fifteen percent 65 grams, chia seed protein eleven percent 48 grams and for the rest 7,4,3,2,1,1/2 percent. If the the equation 7x+6x+5x+4x+3x+2x+1x=454 and the value of x is 16.21 or even in the ball park much less the right one. |
Question: | Does this product contain soy |
Answer: | Part of the protein source is plant based. |
Question: | How many grams of Carbohydrates per serving |
Answer: | 9 grams total. 2 grams sugar |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the packaging recyclable or just as eco friendly as its contents in any way? Is the chocolate sustainably soucred |
Answer: | Great question! In regard to the label, we may be adding more units/measures soon. There is 7-8 mcg of Vitamin B12 per serving. With regard to Omega 3s, there is ~1g per serving of cricket powder. However, what is even more impressive is that cricket powder has the ideal ratio (3:1) of DHA fatty acid and EPA fatty acid. The amount of Vitamin b12 and Omega 3s is more than what most experts recommend as the minimum consumption (generally speaking a little more does not hurt) of these nutrients but we like to remind customers that you do not need to use a full serving of cricket powder in recipes to get some great benefits from crickets. Thanks! Bud's Cricket Power Team |
Question: | I froze this mix Dec 2019 - is it still good |
Answer: | Yes that is correct. Thank you so much for catching this error. Our apologies, we have updated the listing and should take effect within the next half hour. Thanks you, Harrison Food Group |
Question: | How many cookies will this package make |
Answer: | It does not taste like whey. It has an earthier, nuttier taste. I find that the taste is very subtle/mild. I never notice the taste after I add it to smoothies, baked goods, homemade vanilla ice cream, etc. When mixed in with baked goods or a smoothie, I actually think that the taste is less imposing/affecting than other proteins that I have tried. The taste seems to blend in with whatever you add it to. If you eat a spoonful of it, you will definitely notice it though and you will notice that it has a soft sort of nutty, earthy smell when you open the package. |
Question: | Is there dairy in the chocolate chips? I know the allergen list does not include dairy but no ingredients are listed for the chips |
Answer: | Hi Caleb, Thank you for the question. We work with farmers in Northern Thailand where the crickets are grown and processed into. Thailand has a rich history of consuming insects and farmers have grown crickets for human consumption there for decades and so we work with them to tap into their expertise. Our facility has a GMP and HACCP certification to guarantee that our product meets US/Europe standards for human consumption. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use just the cricket powder to cook without other flour? Type 1 looking for low carb option in baking |
Answer: | Yes, you can mix it in with anything. Personally when I tasted the cricket flour straught up on its own i found the flavor more savory and nutty. I prefer to use it as a protein within savory dishes such as within a coconut cauliflower curry dish or mixed in with other cooked veggie dishes. I did not enjoy the flavor when tasting it in paleo/primal "bread" or baked goods. Happy experimenting! |
Question: | what exactly does this taste like on its own? It is salty? Pungent? No taste? can someone be honest because Id like to try it |
Answer: | The word flour just refers to the consistency, not the properties. If anything, it's more akin to protein powder. If using in baked goods, you definitely need to use it with a more traditional flour. The product comes with a recpie for chocolate "chirp" cookies. |
Question: | Is the flour water soluble |
Answer: | They're nurtured at professional farms. They're raised in a hygienic environment and are processed at a GMP certified factory. No preservatives, artificial colors or flavors. Per packaging. I think that's about as good as you'll get. While I eat free range everything else, crickets ate a little tougher to wrangle. Controlled environment probably works better. |
Question: | What do you feed your crickets? Please be specific and include the types of vegetables |
Answer: | It's generally for environmental or health reasons. It takes an average of 2,000 liters of water for 1 pound of steak. It only takes 1 liter of water to raise 1 pound of edible cricket parts. There are also lower amounts of methane emissions resulting from the lifespan of crickets.Crickets are also PACKED with vitamins. It's really crazy how many nutrients some bugs contain. This is a great health benefit over beef or chicken.Cricket flour makes it easier for people to eat in a more environmentally friendly and healthier way, without having the "gross" experience of seeing the bugs in their whole form that many in North America dislike.I hope this helps! |
