User questions & answers
Question: | Would these be ok for kids? Ages 5, 7 and |
Answer: | Hi Jennifer, trekking poles can indeed be used by kids! We do have customers who have purchased our poles for their kids and who've found that the poles truly help their kids especially on uphill or uneven terrain. Now, for choosing the right trekking pole for them, there are several factors you need to consider. First is the height - you can measure the length between your child's elbow to the ground and if they are at least 24.5 inches, then our poles should be suitable for their height. Other factors to consider are weight and the size of the grip - and these two really depend on your kids' strength and hand size. There are poles that are specifically made for kids with a lighter weight and smaller grip and these might be more suitable especially for your 5-year old. The disadvantage of it is that kids can outgrow those poles quite quickly due to limited length adjustability (they are shorter, which makes them lighter). Our poles should not be a problem for your 7 and 10 year old, but might be a bit on the heavy side for your 5-year old (each pole is 9.7 ounces which is roughly the weight of 5 tennis balls), but on the plus side, it will also grow with your child and will last him a long time. Should you decide to give our poles a try, you also have the benefit of our 90-day money back satisfaction guarantee. :) Hope this helps, Jennifer! Please feel free to reach out to us again if you have further questions. |
Question: | How long are the poles at their shortest? Will they fit in my suitcase |
Answer: | It's 24.5 inches short when collapsed. However if that still won't fit your suitcase, you can disassemble it and the length will go down to 21 inches. It'll be very easy to put it back together if you disassemble it. |
Question: | Can I hike with them through rivers? Can these get wet |
Answer: | Yes, in fact it would be good to have these if you're going through rivers - they'll save you from accidental slips especially if the rocks are a bit slippery, and you can also use them to gauge and test the ground (or riverbed) that you're about to step on. We'd recommend giving the poles a thorough drying afterwards though by taking them apart and patting dry or air drying. As with all things metal, rust is an enemy and drying the poles will help prevent that. |
Question: | Do the new Trailbuddy screw-on rubber tips screw on to these poles? The pictures don't show a lower set of threads on the tips |
Answer: | Makers of Trailbuddy told me yesterday that they had worked on a new set of threads that attach the rubber tips so that they cannot come off. They promised to send me a new lower pole with new tips. I do not know when this will come/ and be offered online. It sounds as if it will be soon...in the next few weeks. |

User questions & answers
Question: | air travel |
Answer: | I just traveled to Europe, (April 2018) only took 1 pole, and had no trouble with getting thru TSA or the airline with the pole. It was very helpful with all the walking, stairs, touring in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. I stored the pole in the overhead compartment longways. |
Question: | Has anyone used these for any serious hikes (elevation gains of at least a few thousand feet), and if so, how do they fare |
Answer: | Just used these poles to take myself and a 50 lbs pack from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to the North Rim and then back. They worked like a champ. |
Question: | I am going to Peru and would love to bring some hiking sticks. but I want to limit the size of my suitcase. will these sticks fit into a 27" suitcase |
Answer: | Maureen, I lived there when I was 19-21. I am now 60. My wife is from there and we went to Cuzco 2 years ago. A lot of good things have come to Peru. There are also a lot of cautions you need to be aware of to be safe. I would be happy to talk with on my cell phone 480-414-8190 tomrrow anytime after noon Arizona time. And I hope you are traveling with a group and not alone. Do you speak Spanish? Have you heard of putting poclets sewn inside your pants with Velcro to carry your documents and the bulk of your money? There are wonderful things to see and do but you have to be smart and not set yourself up to be taken advantage of. Sign up to Peruthisweek.com (formerly Livinginperu.com). They send you a daily email of differnt things about Peru which promote Peru and it is all in English. And if you are going to the jungle make sure you have your immunizations. They are having problems with Dengue in the northern part of the country. So depending on when you are going, get prepared!!!!! Information is everything to a successful trip in a foreign country. Don't mean to scare you but americans are usually very trusting and you have to leave that on the bookshelf at home. |
Question: | Can anyone tell me how's the quality of this trekking poles |
Answer: | I purchased these for my wife in 2017 and they keep getting out of adjustment and changing length and now one them is frozen so I cannot adjust the length at all. I will be replacing these with one of higher quality Austrian-type poles that that lock in place one and for all. They are sold at REI. |

Tip Options for Many Conditions
Our poles come with different tip options for different hiking conditions, traverse the paths less traveled!
Rubber tips - For walking paved paths, sidewalks, or large smooth rocks
Carbide tips - For digging into gravel trails, hard packed paths, or ice
Mud baskets - To help prevent your poles from sinking into mud or sand when hiking tougher conditions
Please note, that if using your hiking poles with the rubber tip, they will wear out with time and need to be replaced eventually. Depending on the hiking conditions they may last anywhere from 5-25+ miles.
Anti-Shock Feature For More Comfort
The BAFX Products hiking poles incorporate an anti shock feature located inside of each pole on the top of the middle section. This anti shock feature is an internal spring which helps to reduce the sharp jolt that travels through the pole each time the pole hits the ground.
If you don't like the anti shock feature no problem! It can be easily activated or deactivated on each pole!
Why do I need this? Simple, less stress on your hands and joints during long hikes or walks! If your hiking / walking over long distances this repetitive jolt to your arm joints and hands can wear you down and cause pain, the anti shock feature will help to reduce the jolt resulting in longer, more enjoyable hiking!
Great For All Heights Of People
Not sure what size pole is right for you? Generally speaking, you want your poles to be set at a height where when holding the pole straight up and down, your arm will form a 90° angle. Using this rule of thumb our trekking poles will work great for people of any heights from 3'6" to 6'4". In the listing photos at the top of the page you will find a sizing chart to show you approximately how far to extend your hiking poles! What matters most though is your comfort while out hiking the great outdoors! Try this rule of thumb and see how it works, then adjust as needed to reach your comfort level!
Once you determine your preferred height, there are convenient height markings on our walking poles to help you get the sticks set to the right length quickly and easily!

User questions & answers
Question: | I can’t seem to get the poles to stay together when extended for use. Am I doing something wrong |
Answer: | It's pretty light. It's great for my 7 year old. |
Question: | Is the metal tip replaceable |
Answer: | Ours is slightly tapered, with the top being slightly larger than the bottom. Stick is not circular in cross-section, it is oval. With ~1" being the long axis and 3/4" being the short axis. Makes for a nice fit in child's hand. |
Question: | Are the attachments good for walking in sand? I’m recovering from a broken knee and looking for a walking stick that will be good for my beach vacat |
Answer: | It'd be on the big side, but I don't think I've ever met a 2 year old who didn't feel like they were using something for a big kid! They'd just have to grab around the stick vs holding the top. If you think they could do that, I don't see why they couldn't use it. |
Question: | Are the clamps plastic or metal |
Answer: | I went to lowes, grabbed a replacement rake handle and used it to walk around. I figured this would put my hand in a natural place! When I was comfortable I measured to the top of my hand. If the stick is to be gripped via a strap. Add 2 inches. If the stick was designed to use with your hand on top don't add the 2 inches.Jerry |

User questions & answers
Question: | What size tip would I need if I wanted to replace it |
Answer: | I don't now that anyone can truly answer that but the user, but here's what I do:I relax my arm, then bend it slightly...just a little....and that's where the handle should be: right at that height next to my body. You want to be able to lean on it as you and the walk through each step you take. When you walk, it should be able to support you throughout the step. If you feel you're having to bend to reach it or, conversely, if your arm is TOO bent when the cane is vertical -- at the point of its motion when it is right beside you -- then you will not gain the benefit of the cane. |
Question: | What is the tip made of hard plastic or hard rubber/silicone |
Answer: | Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, the HurryCane Freedom Edition has a recommended weight limit of 350 lbs. The Freedom Edition is 40% stronger than the original HurryCane. Please let us know if you have further questions. |
Question: | Will they let you fly with it |
Answer: | I have had mine for over a year and it's still in excellent. I have severe nerve damage to the right side of my face and ear. My Doctor told me either a cane or my next fall was going to result in having a rod put in my leg. I have stood in stand still lines for quite a long time and my Hurry Cane has not failed me yet. If it does fall over all you have to do it take your foot and step on the bottom of it and it bounces right back up. Only you can decide what is best for you. My mother has both a quad and a Hurry Cane. She is constantly tripping over her quad. I find that to me far more dangerous than the tri. Hope this helps. |
Question: | To what size does it fold |
Answer: | The travel bag is a cheap nylon bag that secures with velcro. If you have to adjust the cane up from the shortest position, it becomes too long and sticks out of the bag by several inches. Also, the wrist strap elastic band that holds it to the cane was over stretched by the packing process making the ring too big and it slides down the cane. Both "extras" are useless as is the cane itself (see my review). |
