3 best dna ancestry test kit for 2

A DNA ancestry test kit for two individuals is a product that allows two people to explore their genetic heritage and ancestry by analyzing their DNA.These kits have become increasingly popular in recent years and are often used for recreational purposes, genealogical research, and to gain insights into one's heritage. Here is an overview of what you can expect from a DNA ancestry test kit for two:

  1. Collection of DNA Samples: Each kit typically includes materials for collecting DNA samples, such as cheek swabs or saliva collection tubes. The individuals participating in the test will provide their DNA samples using these materials.

  2. Shipping the Samples: After collecting the DNA samples, they are carefully packaged and sent to the testing company's laboratory using the prepaid shipping materials provided in the kit.

  3. Laboratory Analysis: Once the DNA samples arrive at the laboratory, the company will extract DNA from the samples and analyze specific regions of the DNA known as markers or SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms). These markers are compared to reference databases to determine genetic ancestry.

  4. Ancestry Results: The test results are usually provided in the form of an online report or through a mobile app. The report will detail the individual's ethnic and geographical ancestry, often broken down by percentages. It may also provide information about relatives who have also taken the same test, allowing for potential family connections to be discovered.

  5. Health Insights (Optional): Some DNA ancestry test kits also offer the option to receive health-related information, including genetic predispositions to certain health conditions. This can include information about carrier status for certain genetic conditions, but it's important to note that these health insights may not be as comprehensive or accurate as those from dedicated health-focused genetic tests.

  6. Privacy Considerations: Individuals should carefully review the privacy policy of the testing company to understand how their genetic data will be handled and whether it may be used for research purposes or shared with third parties.

  7. Cost: The cost of DNA ancestry test kits can vary widely, depending on the company and the level of detail provided in the results.

  8. Interpreting Results: It's essential to understand that the results of DNA ancestry tests are estimates based on available reference data. They may not provide an exhaustive picture of one's ancestry, and interpretations can vary between different testing companies.

Keep in mind that while DNA ancestry test kits can be a fun and educational way to learn about your genetic heritage, they should not be used as a sole source of information for making significant health or life decisions. For specific health concerns, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or undergo dedicated medical testing.

User questions & answers

Question: It says you need an Ancestry account. Do you have to pay for their online site
Answer: No, you don't have to pay, yet again, to see your results. If you want to see how you relate to other people via your DNA, yes, you do need a subscription. There is a 50% discount for the first 6 months or so, but you need to ask for it. I found my Father using Ancestry, BTW.
Question: What happens to your DNA once the test is performed
Answer: Nothing happens to it. If you are worried about someone somehow getting into the database your account is only identified as a random number. You can also send in the test under a fake name (few in my family did this, used a Pets name the street name) Only downside to doing that is you won’t be able to link to any potential relatives. At the end of the day I know DNA can be obtained from just about anything I touch or use in so if someone really wants it they can get it -shrug-
Question: Does this kit provide info about genetic snp's like mthfr mutations
Answer: The AncestryDNA or 23 and Me “Ethnicity + HEALTH” tests DO provide info as to what gene mutations you have and a list of what health issues you are dispositioned for due to said mutation. I, for instance, found out I have the MTHFR gene mutation. I learned who I got it from & some scary stuff, such as, being dispositioned for Schizophrenia and miscarriages (and about 99 more things). It is really hard to find a doctor who knows anything about it. You’d need to visit mthfr(dot)net and research for yourself. Sadly.
Question: Why should i buy from amazon when there is a disclaimer stating not to because the kit could be rejected
Answer: What the others above said was correct. It’s sold by Ancestry but shipped by Amazon. (Like most things here. Brands/sellers are selling their item on Amazon & Amazon ships. I just got my results back & my adult son should have his back any day. Super easy process and it’s fun! I was very surprised by mine. 100% Trusted to buy from Amazon. If you buy it from Ancestry site you’ll be paying like $40 in shipping (I think it’s actually more than $40) & why I purchased them here! Good luck!

User questions & answers

Question: Why does this brand lump british & irish together? (i noticed ancestry dna lists them separately). the genes are significantly different. thanks
Answer: It will if you have a significant difference, if that is the case, it will drill down to say Irish. For instance, my husband (who is from Ireland) was 99% British and Irish, and then drilled down to 99% Irish. I was 88% from Spain and Portugal (I'm from Portugal) and then drilled down to 88% Portugal. I never mentioned to them I was from Portugal so the fact that they determined that I was Portuguese and not Spanish or a mixture was a surprise. Now, if you only have a small percentage they may not be able to distinguish between the two groups. Hope this helped!
Question: Does this test include access to raw data
Answer: There is access to your raw data, however if you recently took the test and have results under the V5 chip, you will not be able to upload to many third party sites at this time as this raw data is not yet supportrd
Question: In regards to finding out my Native American roots, will this provide ancestral records to tribal affiliation
Answer: Not only will it not provide tribal affiliation, there is a notable rate of false negatives for Native American ancestry in DNA testing right now (both 23andme and other companies). Meaning these results might say you have zero Native ancestry even when you do have some. People who have their family tree well documented and live on reservations have had this happen, due to the comparison samples the companies use to test against.
Question: do i pay for shipping to return test
Answer: you don't need to pay for return shipping but you'll probably need to send it more than once because they lose kits all the time.

User questions & answers

Question: Do the results give countries or just continents? I would like one that gives specific countries
Answer: Just a general response to all the older responses to questions. All of the DNA companies are constantly changing their DNA results. The more people that have the test, that more data goes into improving the accuracy and/or improves the ability to be more specific. Therefore, just wanted to say, as time goes on, the older responses may no longer be valid.
Question: Do you get both maternal and paternal lines with this test
Answer: Not distinct, separate lines, no. But you do get those results, just mixed up. AncestryDNA tests only autosomal chromosomes; that is, non-sex chromosomes. These are the 22 chromosomes everyone has regardless of gender. That means your results will show both your parents' ancestry, even if you're female, but it'll be combined - you won't be able to tell which parent provided which country or DNA result. For maternal- and paternal-specific ancestry (mtDNA and YDNA, respectively), 23andme provides this testing. AncestryDNA stopped doing it in 2014 (see https://blogs.ancestry.com/ancestry/2014/06/12/comments-on-y-dna-and-mtdna-tests/). I recommend doing both AncestryDNA and 23andme for a more comprehensive picture of your background. And if you're female, ask a male relative (father, brother, paternal uncle) to do 23andme so you can extrapolate your paternal YDNA and haplogroup, since females do not carry the Y sex chromosome. Again, this is not available via AncestryDNA.If you are only interested in overall, general, "big-picture" results, and aren't concerned with specifics like which part of the world your maternal/paternal line came from per se, or your haplogroups, then AncestryDNA is the way to go.
Question: Are these results on a par with 23andme? Are they identical or is there more info or less
Answer: Depends on what you’re using it for. I took Ancestry and my sister to 23andme. We were looking to confirm our relatives not our ethnicity. We had way more matches and have been able to find common ancestors with other DNA matches. 23 and me is harder to sort through the matches and I’m not sure If you can even see other people’s family trees as i haven’t figured it out in almost a year
Question: How many past generations does this test go back? Will it test going back a few hundred years
Answer: That depends on your ancestry and the number of people of similar ancestry who have tested. Biggest group is European heritage. I have 6th and 7th generation matches going back to colonial New England because there was a good degree of pedigree collapse (genetic reinforcement due to small populations intermarrying) The majority of matches will be in the 4th cousin range. However, matches are pointless unless you have a decent family tree (at least 4 generations) and respond to messages because you will not be able to make the connections otherwise.
