When opened a bag will fit into a waste basket about 15 inches (38.1cm) from top to bottom x 9.5 inches (24.13 cm) on the short side and 13.5 inches (34.29 cm) on the long side. It does not open into a flat bottom but more like a tube sock. It is thick enough to hold a couple of pounds of cat litter without breaking. I would not trust it with anything sharp or pointed.
