From the outer edge of each lip front to back is closer to 9 and 3/4 inches. INTERIOR dimensions from handle to handle: 11 and 1/2 inches. INTERIOR dimensions front to back: 8 inches. As you can see from the picture, it's a bit narrower at the bottom. These are the EXTERIOR dimensions at the bottom: Right to left (between the handles) I measured 8 and 1/2 inches. Front to back I measured just a tad short of 7 inches. This is as specific as I could get. Based upon my measurements (and I was careful) it appears that Rubbermaid provides measurements that are accurate, not precise. This receptacle DOES specifically accommodate the standard plastic grocery bags - anything smaller will be a problem.
