User questions & answers
Question: | Can this product be safely applied to a wooden bowl that will be eaten out of? Once the bowl is polished and dry, will it be safe to eat out of |
Answer: | Mine arrived in the summer in a similar "frozen" form. I didn't heat it in any way; but, yes, a serious "man"-shaking is required to get it into a more integrated, still-thick, but pour- or squeeze-able form. Its state is a good indicator that the product is in fact wax and oil, and not water-based. |
Question: | Will this get rid of beverage rings on an oak table |
Answer: | I recommend Howard Orange Oil. It cleans wood items fantastically well, and I prefer it to Murphy's Oil Soap. I have all three products and the Orange Oil cleans and shines so well that I don't bother with the Feed N Wax most times. If I could only have one product to use with wood furniture and antiques I would choose the Orange Oil, but both it and the Feed N Wax are excellent products. I completely rejuvenated a depression era walnut buffet server, an old floor standing radio and a dried out and filthy butcher block style maple work bench with Orange Oil. It cleans better than Murphy's Oil Soap (or any other product I have ever used) and is absorbed by dry wood better than the Feed N Wax. It works wonders on old tool handles as well, such has hammers, axes, and shovels. And as a bonus, it cleans rust off the tools really well too. |
Question: | Is this supposed to be a thick wax or a liquid product? Mine arrived and I'm wondering if it got frozen. It's thick |
Answer: | Would be more than enough, I use the 1000 watt version to run my 4 6x8's. |
Question: | what should I clean wood furniture with first |
Answer: | This amp is almost 150 w rms. It is poor in power. I sold mine. In less money than the amount that I pay. Becouse it is poor. |

Product description
In 1969, Douglas G. Howard set out to solve this dilemma: how can you eliminate blemishes in wood finishes and restore the original color and luster without removing any of the existing finish? Unable to find an answer at his local hardware store, he went to work in his garage to create his own product. His goal was to make something that would be much more than a surface treatment, yet nothing like a stripper or a refinisher. The key was to develop a formula that could clean and polish the surface, penetrate the finish with stain, and leave the original finish intact. The end result was Restor-A-Finish, Doug Howard's first in what would become a complete line of wood care products. For over 40 years, Howard's Restor-A-Finish has been a standard in the antique industry. Because Restor-A-Finish preserves the original wood finish it also helps preserve its authenticity and value, whereas stripping the finish may literally strip the piece of its value. Almost any existing wood tone, from a Birdseye Maple to a Jacobean, can be closely matched using one of the nine available finish colors. Trying it on just about everything with a traditional wood finish, antique dealers, refinishers, and homemakers have found it to be a safer and easier alternative to stripping and refinishing. Scratches, oxidation, white heat rings, watermarks, smoke damage, and sun fade simply disappear.

User questions & answers
Question: | what to use to clean wood first and then after the application of restor a finish |
Answer: | Yes it would. You would need to sand it about 1” to 2” beyond the acetone mark (all around) with fine sandpaper instead of the steel wool recommended on the product instructions. Do it gently in circular even pressure moves. It will be a labor of love therefore, patience. Remove the dust created and clean the area very well. Apply the chosen color very lightly. Allow to really dry which will be more than 24hrs. Apply another gentle dab. Allow to dry. By now, you should be getting close to the color but repeat until satisfactory. All the best! |
Question: | Will it help with acetone stain |
Answer: | Their Ebony Brown shade is ideal for modern Espresso finishes. I've used it to dramatic and fantastic effect. Great stuff! |
Question: | Which color should I get if I have dark expresso color wood |
Answer: | Just used the maple pine and left on a few mins. did section by section directions say wipe on and off and that is probably better as the floor is a bit darker HOWEVER. The floor was wretched with loss of finish in several places. It is now totally acceptable. After drying, used paste wax and then buffed. The floor is a save. We are selling the house and this saved refinishing |
Question: | can you use it on floors |
Answer: | There are brackets the sides slip into. No tools are required. Will be easy to disassemble if I need to move them out. I put this together by myself. It was very easy. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this on bamboo |
Answer: | Not so far. Been using it for about 2 months. Wax the board several times to start with, letting each coat dry thoroughly - I waited overnight each time. Now, I add a light coat when I notice that the water is no longer beading up on the surface, or a food is leaving a stain behind. I really like it, although I wish it would last a bit longer between coats. |
Question: | Does this product create a wax build-up over time on your cutting board |
Answer: | I just used this product alone without any oil and it has done a great job in preserving. We did however put 10 coats on instead of recommended amount. We found this to be better preps. |
Question: | do I have to use the oil first or just use the condition with out the oil separate |
Answer: | Use Cutting Board Oil and Butcher Block Conditioner whenever the wood looks or feels dry by applying one coat of either product. On new or raw wood surfaces, like cutting boards and butcher blocks, make sure to "season" them first with Cutting Board Oil. To properly "season" new wood surfaces, apply at least 2 coats and let each coat soak in for at least an hour. For surfaces thicker than 1-inch apply 3-4 coats. Additional coats help ensure that the oil fully soaks into the wood. After Cutting Board Oil, maintain wood with Howard Butcher Block Conditioner by applying 1 coat and let it stand for at least 20 minutes. For countertops, let the conditioner soak overnight and in the morning, wipe away excess. The conditioner helps protect the wood by keeping the mineral oil in and the moisture out. Butcher blocks can be regularly oiled with Cutting Board Oil or Butcher Block Conditioner to keep them seasoned and ready for use. These products can be used together for best results but can be used alone as well. |
Question: | Howard's Conditioner vs. Howard's Oil - I can't find any info on what the differences are. Need to season a small block |
Answer: | Nothing. Only restor-a-finish. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the coverage per gallon |
Answer: | It is rather thick consistancy even when it is heated. We brush it on with a cheap chisel paint brush. We have been using this for years and love it. It works wonders. |
Question: | How do you clean wood floors with this |
Answer: | It can. It's not like floor wax, it's a conditioner. However, if you use it on something that's already sealed, it's not going to condition the wood, it's just going to make it slick. I use it on bare teak and it's great but I got some on our bathroom floor once and about killed myself slipping on it because the floor is already sealed and the conditioner made it like ice. |
Question: | How thick is it? Can it be sprayed on |
Answer: | Thanks for your question. Our beeswax is easy to wipe. Use a sponge or rag to apply a small amount of beeswax to the furniture evenly. When it dries(30 minutes), wipe and polish with a clean towel repeatedly. Deep nourishment needs to be left for about 15 hours, which is conducive to the penetration of beeswax into the wood. |
Question: | Does this make a wood floor slippery |
Answer: | I think is USA , but check on the item information |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is "Butcher Block Conditioner" or "Cutting Board Oil" better for Chicago Cutlery wooden knife handles |
Answer: | The Butcher Block Conditioner includes beeswax, which will be more water repellent than just the oil. Treating the knive handle or cutting board (esp. a butcher block style board) with multiple applications will allow the beeswax to penetrate deeply into the wood. Once done, a quick wipedown with oil is all that is needed to keep the board in good condition.Short answer: use Conditioner on an newly made handle/board or a cutting board that is not acting water repellent, and oil as a touchup after washing. |
Question: | Can you use on bamboo |
Answer: | why not? it is a hard wood. they have bamboo cutting boards. unless there is specific instuctions from the manufacturer stating otherwise. |
Question: | Could I use this on finished oak wood, that is on most of my kitchen table and chairs |
Answer: | Your wasting your time using this on "Finished" wood. A better option would be Murphy's Oil Soap. This is more for raw wood like cutting boards and seasoning cast iron cookware. |
Question: | What are the different reasons for using the oil over the conditioner and vice versa |
Answer: | I have used both the oil and the conditioner. I have two cutting boards, both hardwood, one old board and one new board. For the old board (3" thick oak that I have used 40 years), I prefer the conditioner which gives a waxy, burnished surface and does a good job cleaning the board up. My new board (black walnut 3" thick) I applied multiple coats of oil to condition the wood. I used 3 coats front and back to begin. The oil will sink right in on a brand new air-dried board. The oil keeps the wood from drying out, brings out the grain, enhancing the beauty and the usefulness of the board. Each week when I was first using the new board, I have applied a couple of coats of oil. The board now looks and acts as if it is about 5 years old. I sometimes apply the conditioner after the oil as the beeswax gives some impenetrability to the wood. Both products are excellent, and I would now not go without having them! I also think the conditioner makes knife "tracks" a little less visible. My sons do not want to use their boards because of the beauty of the walnut, but of course the value of a good cutting board is its use in creating delectable things. Using these products will also make it easier to pat or roll out biscuits without them sticking to the board. |
