11 best instant ice packs
Instant ice packs are a type of cold pack used for therapeutic and first-aid purposes. They are designed to provide quick and convenient cooling relief to injuries, reduce swelling, and alleviate pain. Here's what you need to know about instant ice packs:
Instant Cooling Action:
- Instant ice packs are designed to provide rapid cooling without the need for refrigeration or pre-freezing. They achieve this through a chemical reaction that generates cold temperatures when activated.
Key Components:
- These packs typically consist of two main compartments separated by a barrier. One compartment contains water, and the other contains ammonium nitrate or a similar chemical.
- When the pack is activated, you break the barrier separating the two compartments, allowing the chemical and water to mix. This chemical reaction absorbs heat from the surrounding environment, rapidly lowering the temperature of the pack.
Ease of Use:
- Instant ice packs are easy to use in emergency situations or when immediate cold therapy is needed. They do not require a freezer or refrigerator, making them convenient for on-the-go use.
- To activate the pack, you typically squeeze or knead it to break the barrier, initiating the cooling process.
Application:
- Instant ice packs are commonly used for various purposes, including:
- First Aid: They are valuable in treating injuries like sprains, strains, bruises, and minor burns.
- Sports and Physical Therapy: Athletes often use instant ice packs to manage post-exercise soreness and injuries.
- Pain Relief: They can help reduce pain and inflammation associated with various conditions, such as arthritis.
- Fever Reduction: In some cases, instant ice packs can be applied to the forehead or neck to help reduce fever.
- Instant ice packs are commonly used for various purposes, including:
Duration of Cooling:
- The cooling effect of instant ice packs is relatively short-lived compared to traditional gel-based ice packs. They typically provide cooling for around 15 to 30 minutes.
Disposable:
- Most instant ice packs are designed for one-time use and are disposable after activation. They cannot be reused once the chemical reaction is triggered.
Safety Precautions:
- Users should follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to ensure safe and effective use.
- It's essential to avoid direct skin contact with the pack, as the low temperatures can cause frostbite or skin irritation.
Storage and Shelf Life:
- Instant ice packs have a shelf life, and their effectiveness can diminish over time. It's crucial to check the expiration date before use.
Alternatives:
- While instant ice packs offer immediate cooling relief, reusable gel-based ice packs that can be stored in the freezer provide more extended periods of cold therapy.
In summary, instant ice packs are valuable tools for providing rapid cold therapy in various situations. They are easy to use, portable, and suitable for minor injuries, pain relief, and fever reduction. However, they have a relatively short duration of cooling compared to traditional ice packs and should be disposed of after use.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you used this to cool down while hiking |
Answer: | Check with TSA as they would probably know. Also check online with an airline that is specific to the country you are flying to. Example is British Airways which flies to the UK. If they don't allow them use a ziplock bag and get ice from the flight attendants. That's what I do. |
Question: | I can't get it to activate. I have squeezed it together every which way, what am I doing wrong |
Answer: | Probably not. These are chemical based packs that become cold, but not ice cold, the minute they're activated. (Crushed in bare hands and shook) They're mostly for portable, on the spot cooling for injuries and often used to cool down over-heated persons with quick easy application behind the neck, knees, etc. until real ice can be obtained. Also, they loose their chill in most cases within 30 minutes. They would work to cool down some candy bars or fruit but again....30 minutes and they're pretty well spent. My suggestion is "Freezer Blocks". They're reuseable, very efficient and long lasting in a decent cooler, inexpensive and come in a multitude of sizes. IF Amazon does not have what you want, check your local "W" store in the sporting goods/cooler area. Good luck!! |
Question: | Can these be stored in a vehicle where they may get hot during the summer? Are there any warnings on the label about how to store them |
Answer: | No idea, but they work well. |
Question: | What is the trick? I have squeezed and twisted and nothing happens |
Answer: | YES. From TSA website: Instant/rapid ice packs that are activated by force—when used for medical/first aid purposes. These items are allowed in carry-on or checked baggage—when carried for medical purposes such as the treatment of sporting injuries. These products contain ammonium nitrate (a hazardous material) and are activated by force such as squeezing them or striking them. They are often used for first aid during sporting events. Quantity limits: Included in, not in addition to, the quantity limits for medicinal and toiletry articles: The total aggregate quantity per person cannot exceed 2 kg (70 ounces) or 2 L (68 fluid ounces). The capacity of each container must not exceed 0.5 kg (18 ounces) or 500 ml (17 fluid ounces).* See the regulation: 49 CFR 175.10(a)(1) |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the lowest temperature in C does this pack reach |

Question: | What are the contents inside the instant cold pack |
Answer: | Manufacturer states they remain cold for 30 minutes but depends on the surrounding temperatures and conditions. |
Question: | Does TSA allow this as carry-ons on palnes |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use for travel |
Answer: | Sure. |
Question: | what are the ingredients? how much does the box weigh for shipping |
Answer: | Packet says: ammonium nitrate fertilizer (NA-2072) and water. It's a pretty sizable box. I'm going to guess 20 pounds, but it's purely a guess. Box arrived in really bad shape -- packets almost falling out. Packets themselves are 4.5" x 7". Besides the poor shipping, we are very happy with them. You pop them and get instantly cold; they last about 15-20 minutes. |
Question: | will this work for homemade targets |
Answer: | I'm not sure what a homemade target means in relation to these instant cold packs. But I can tell you that these were defective and/or just horrible cold packs and I returned them. Never got cold to work |
Question: | do they expire |
Answer: | As long as the two chemicals dont mix they will last for years |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this provide compression |
Answer: | I loved the moisture wrap lotion and used it for years. So disappointed they have discontinued it. This is thicker; I don't really like the feel of it as much as the moisture wrap but do generally like the Neutrogena products so I have stuck with it. |
