12 best surgical tapes
Surgical tapes are essential components of first aid and wound care, playing a crucial role in securing bandages and dressings, as well as providing support to injured areas. Here are key points about surgical tapes:
Definition and Purpose: Surgical tapes are adhesive strips or rolls of tape used to secure dressings, bandages, or other medical devices to the skin. They help keep wound dressings in place, provide support to injured areas, and prevent contamination.
Materials: Surgical tapes are commonly made from materials such as cloth, paper, or plastic. Each material has its own set of characteristics, and the choice depends on factors like the type of injury, the location of the wound, and the individual's skin sensitivity.
Adhesive Properties: The tapes feature a hypoallergenic adhesive that adheres securely to the skin without causing irritation. The adhesive is designed to be strong enough to keep the dressing in place but gentle enough for use on sensitive skin.
Breathability: Some surgical tapes are designed to be breathable, allowing air to reach the wound. This helps in maintaining a suitable environment for healing and reduces the risk of skin maceration.
Water Resistance: Certain types of surgical tapes are water-resistant or waterproof. This feature is particularly useful in situations where the dressing needs to stay in place despite exposure to moisture.
Types of Surgical Tapes:
- Cloth Tapes: Made from fabric, these tapes are flexible and conform well to body contours.
- Paper Tapes: These tapes are lightweight and may be gentler on the skin, suitable for more delicate areas.
- Plastic Tapes: Often transparent, providing visibility to the wound, and they are water-resistant.
Application in First Aid: Surgical tapes are a fundamental component of first aid kits. They are used to secure gauze pads, dressings, and other wound care materials in place, preventing them from shifting or falling off.
Securing Medical Devices: Surgical tapes are not only used for wound care but also for securing medical devices such as catheters, tubing, and electrodes. The tapes provide a reliable method of attachment without causing harm to the skin.
Taping Techniques: Professionals and individuals providing first aid are trained in various taping techniques to ensure the tape is applied securely and effectively. This includes techniques like the "H-strip" or "anchor and strips."
Removal Considerations: When removing surgical tape, it's essential to do so carefully to avoid causing additional trauma to the skin. Many tapes are designed to be easily removable without causing undue discomfort.
In summary, surgical tapes are versatile tools used in wound care and medical applications. Their adhesive properties, breathability, and water resistance make them valuable in various scenarios, from simple first aid to more complex medical procedures.

User questions & answers
Question: | why does it say 1 count but then 24 rolls |
Answer: | Because the 1-pack was out of stock. You're only other option was 24 packs. Had the same problem, I believe. |
Question: | How long is this medical tape |
Answer: | There is 10 yards on a roll of this tape. |
Question: | is this the type of old fashion tape that can be written on |
Answer: | Its white silk cloth tape, not coated on the side without adhesive. If you write on it with ink, the ink will slowly wick along the fibers and the writing will gradually smudge. Depending on how old your fashion is, you could be thinking of a canvas cotton tape with a heavy layer of white paint or plastic. I haven't seen the coated canvas tape lately. White 3M electrical tape takes ink well and the rate at which it smudges is as slow as the white coated canvas tape, i.e. low cost ball-point pen remains legible for at least 5 years, which was longer than the adhesive on the coated cotton tape lasted, fine point felt tip lasts for more than 10, and the limit is not smudging. While the adhesive on the 3m electrical tape will last almost indefinitely, my experience has been that ink from Sharpies faded after 12 to 15 years. |
Question: | Is the adhesive vegan? Is this product tested on animals |
Answer: | I am a mammal and I tested it. I give it two thumbs up! |

Nexcare Gentle Paper Tape FAQs
For Nexcare tape rolls that do not come with dispensers, run your finger around the roll until you feel a ridge. This is the edge of the tape. Use your fingernail to lift up the edge, then unroll whatever size piece you need. The tape tears easily by hand, so no need for scissors.
Tip: turn a short piece at the leading edge of the tape under to create an easy starting point for the next time you need it.
How do I remove a bandage/tape or dressing that will not release easily from my or my child's skin?
If a bandage, tape or dressing is not easily releasing avoid pulling on it, instead work a little baby oil or cooking oil into the adhesive to help the product release from the skin. Or use ice (covered with a paper towel) for 5 minutes or less. Ice will make the adhesive brittle, which may cause it to release.
Do you have any products for sensitive skin?
If your skin has a tendency to react to adhesive, try our line of Sensitive Skin Products. They were designed for easy removal and are repositionable. Available in a bandage, tape, dressing and eye patch. Nexcare Gentle Paper Tape is also available in a 1" x 10 yd. roll; 2" x 10 yd. roll and a tape dispenser (3/4" x 8 yds).

User questions & answers
Question: | I need a medical tape that holds on bandages very secure, will this tape hold up? I'm wheelchair bound so I don't move, but my bandage Must be held ti |
Answer: | I ended up using paper tape instead of this tape because this tape holds so securely. It ripped hair and hurt to remove it. I have thin skin and it left red smooth marks on my skin after it was removed. I think it peeled a layer of skin off. So if adhesion is what you want this will give you that. It is tough and waterproof. Good Luck. |
Question: | Is this pretty waterproof |
Answer: | No. Not at all. The best waterproof tape is that sticky, thick sports tape. However, if tape is really harsh on your skin and even peels your skin off, I wouldn't recommend sports tape. |
Question: | Is this tape used for sagging facial skin |
Answer: | I was terminally ill (miracle recovery). After the illness (lost 50 pounds in 2 months), the skin on my neck was suddenly saggy (I'm not that age yet). So, until I can pay off my hospital bills, and then save for work on my neck, I use this, sometimes, to tighten the skin on my neck when I have someplace I have to see people who don't know about my illness. It holds well under regular circumstances but will need readjusting or reapplication if you are sweating a lot or turning your head a lot. So, when I go out, I carry a small roll in my purse. |
Question: | Is this a fabric or medical plastic material |
Answer: | This is medical plastic tape. |

User questions & answers
Question: | where is the tape made |
Answer: | The overwrap packaging states: " made in USA by 3M Health Care ,St. Paul, Minn. |
Question: | does this work well on infants under3 months |
Answer: | It is easier on the skin than a lot of others but it still sticks really firmly. It is going to be really rough on baby skin. 3m makes another product Nexcare Sensitive Skin tape. It is light blue. I never found it in bulk packaging but it is the easiest on skin that I could find. Another tip btw, use alcohol on cotton swabs to loosen the glue on the tape when you remove it. Eventually it will dry out the skin but it makes removal less painful. |
Question: | can this tape stick to the skin |
Answer: | The tape does stick to skin, but is not painful to remove. It is a gentle tape. |
Question: | Can you please tell me exactly what this tape is made of? Looking for something with natural fibers only |
Answer: | I believe is of natural fibers. Feels soft cotton textures and also is pre-cut for easy convenience. Is a tape mostly uses by practitioners in my area. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many yards on a roll |
Answer: | I no longer have any of these rolls to refer to but I would think it should be in the expanded description of the product. It looks as if the two inch wide ones have 10 yards each from what I see in the description of surrounding rolls of the same product. |
Question: | It says 12 pack... so you receive 12 rolls with dispensers? Are they latex free and lint free |
Answer: | Yes-12 rolls each in its own dispenser. It is paper tape so believe it is latex free. Have never seen any lint. On my second purchase. |
Question: | m makes this in high, medium and low adhesion/stickiness. Which is this and how can you tell |
Answer: | we purchased the 3m 1535-1 micropore surgical tape, 12 in a box, it's a lightweight paper tape, worked perfectly for my mom, in treating her for a bedsore on the heel of her foot after applying the gel and gauze. this paper tape was then used to keep the gauze in place, easy to put on, and cut easily every morning to apply a fresh dressing |
Question: | Can you remove the tape and resuse the dispenser |
Answer: | Yes, the dispenser is reusuable. We bought a box with dispensers and have since just ordered the tape without them. |

Question: | Twice in one week I ordered a box of 12 rolls and received a box of 6 rolls. Why? I like product, but needed the box of 12 rolls |
Answer: | The exact same thing happened to me. When I turned the box over I saw the wrong SKU sticker on the box. I ordered 12 rolls of 1” tape, but received 6 rolls of 2” tape. Not sure if it’s on the Amazon fulfillment site or the supplier site that made the mistake. It’s truly aggravating!. |
Question: | does this have same adhesive as the 3M transpore |
Answer: | A little thinner & less sticky than 3m but adheres just the same. I have no issues using this tape to bandage my wound. |
Question: | Is there any plastic in the packaging or product? I’m looking for a product that plastic free (both materials and packaging |
Answer: | I use this tape every day, but sorry, the core that the tape is wound around is plastic. I see someone else said it was cardboard but my 1" tape from Medpride has all been plastic. The 2" micropore paper tape from 3M does have a cardboard core. |
Question: | Is this six rolls of tape for |
