Answer:	Yes the battery can be replaced but not by a novice. Wahl recommends that the rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries in this unit be replaced by Wahl and not the user. If you are a mechanical or electronically oriented person you may be able to do it yourself. But let me say this. My Wahl 9918-6171 unit arrived on 8/30/13. I charged it overnight and then disconnected from the cord and have been using it as a cordless trimmer ever since it's first use on 8/31/13. I have yet to recharge it and it is still working today 9/16/13 as well as the first time that I used it. If at some future date the charge of this cordless unit is too low when I go to use it - NO PROBLEM - I will just plug it in and use it as a corded trimmer and after using it leave it plugged in to recharge. I do want to make you aware though that my use is only as a mustache and side burn trimmer. I have no beard. Answer:	The end unscrews--has a 3 battery container that the batteries are inserted into.
