If you are a mechanical or electronically oriented person you may be able to do it yourself. But let me say this. My Wahl 9918-6171 unit arrived on 8/30/13. I charged it overnight and then disconnected from the cord and have been using it as a cordless trimmer ever since it's first use on 8/31/13. I have yet to recharge it and it is still working today 9/16/13 as well as the first time that I used it.
