3 best natural fly repellent for horses
Natural fly repellents for horses are products designed to protect horses from annoying and potentially harmful flies and other flying insects. These products are often favored by horse owners who prefer more natural and chemical-free solutions. Here's what you should know about natural fly repellents for horses:
Ingredients: Natural fly repellents typically use natural ingredients that have insect-repelling properties. Common ingredients include essential oils such as citronella, eucalyptus, lemongrass, and cedarwood. These oils are known for their ability to deter flies and other insects.
Sprays and Balms: Natural fly repellents are available in various forms, including sprays and balms. Spray-on repellents are convenient and can be applied directly to the horse's coat, while balms are often used on sensitive areas like the face or around wounds.
Long-Lasting: Many natural fly repellents are formulated to provide lasting protection against flies, often for several hours. This is important for horses that spend significant time outdoors.
Non-Toxic: Natural fly repellents are typically non-toxic to both horses and humans. This makes them a safer option for both application and use in the horse's environment.
Environmentally Friendly: These products are often considered more environmentally friendly than chemical alternatives, as they do not contribute to pollution or harm non-targeted wildlife.
Versatility: Some natural fly repellents can also be used to protect horses from other pests like ticks, mosquitoes, and gnats, providing all-around protection.
Custom or Handmade Options: In the category of handmade products, you can find custom or small-batch natural fly repellents. These products may be crafted with extra care and attention to quality.
Application: When applying natural fly repellent to horses, it's essential to follow the instructions provided by the product manufacturer. This often involves spraying or rubbing the product onto the horse's coat, mane, tail, and other areas susceptible to fly irritation.
Reapplication: Depending on the product, you may need to reapply it periodically to ensure continued protection. This is particularly important on hot, sunny days or during strenuous activities.
Effectiveness: The effectiveness of natural fly repellents can vary from product to product and may be influenced by factors such as the concentration of active ingredients and the horse's individual sensitivity to flies.
Horse owners often choose natural fly repellents to provide relief for their horses from the discomfort and potential health issues associated with fly bites. As with any equine care product, it's advisable to consult with a veterinarian or equine specialist to select the most suitable natural fly repellent for your horse based on its specific needs and environment.

A Legacy More Than 125 Years in the Making
Every day at Absorbine is a celebration of a legacy that began with a truly extraordinary couple: Mary Ida and Wilbur F. Young.
A labor of love, they set out to find an alternative to the common 19th-century practice of “blistering” lame horses. Knowing there had to be a better, more humane way, Mary Ida developed a special blend of herbs into an essential oils tincture, and Wilbur rounded out the formula with a few more natural ingredients using knowledge he gained working part time for a pharmacist. The result of their teamwork is Absorbine Veterinary Liniment, which has been loved by horse owners for over 125 years.
Through the years we have stayed true to our mission to provide innovative, high quality animal care products. Our products are used by horse owners around the world, and we work hard every day to be The Horse World’s Most Trusted Name.

Question: | Can i used on dogs |
Answer: | Personally I would not use it. Many products used on horses are not okay for pregnant mares or (eww) horses intended for food. In addition, products such as Wipe should not come in contact with your hands. I keep a pair of plastic gloves in my tack box when using such a product. |

Question: | Does this work for Mosquitoes also |
Answer: | Susie, I just today had to give my horse an injection of Dexamethasone, and will administer dex powder for 5 days, due to the horrible hives that my horse has broken out in due to this product. Have used regular Bronco for about a year with no issues. Cow flies were getting bad, so I bought this due to all the positive comments. My horse's tail was surgically altered for the show pen years ago, and so she can't swish off the flies like other horses, so I predominantly sprayed over her hip and rump. That is where the hives are SO bad, that even rinsing off the product, once we made the connection, made her wince. In fact, on one side I used shampoo and then betadine to get that stuff off her, and rinsed her like crazy, but still her fur is raised and coated there! Its like I can't wash it off! I've never read the back of a fly spray product in my life, so didn't with this one, either, until now. There are warnings about how much, and how often, right on the bottle. Luckily, and though I have sprayed her 2-3 times over past 5 days, I didn't exceed the warnings. Still, I'll be writing to Farnam to suggest they put BIG warning letters on the bottle. For my mare, its as if she has a terrible sunburn, and she doesn't want to be touched. Rinsing her caused her lips and head to twitch, as if she wanted to scratch but couldn't. I feel like such a schmuck. |
Question: | will this work for an hour lesson |
Answer: | No. Unfortunately it will not work well. I spray myself and horses and around the inside of their outside feeding stall. It does keep the flies off of bodies well and it does keep the flies out of the feeding stall for a few hours. To control flies overall I use a fly spray system and have it set to spray 30 seconds every 2 hours and have included their turnouts in the system. Good luck. |
