11 best dried wheat berries
Dried wheat berries are whole wheat kernels that have had their outer husk removed but retain the bran, germ, and endosperm, making them a nutritious and versatile pantry staple. Here's what you should know about dried wheat berries:
Whole Grain: Dried wheat berries are considered whole grains because they contain all parts of the wheat kernel, including the bran, germ, and endosperm. This means they are rich in nutrients and dietary fiber.
Nutritional Value: These grains are a good source of complex carbohydrates, fiber, and protein. They also provide essential nutrients such as B vitamins (especially B vitamins like niacin, thiamin, and folate), iron, magnesium, and zinc.
Chewy Texture: When cooked, dried wheat berries have a firm and chewy texture, somewhat similar to barley. This texture makes them a great addition to salads, soups, and other dishes.
Versatile Ingredient: Dried wheat berries can be used in a variety of culinary applications. They make a hearty addition to grain salads, pilafs, and side dishes. You can also use them as a base for breakfast bowls or grind them into flour for baking.
Cooking Instructions: To prepare dried wheat berries, they need to be soaked and then simmered in water or broth until they become tender. The cooking time can vary, but it typically takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour. Some people prefer to soak them overnight to reduce cooking time.
Health Benefits: Wheat berries are a healthy choice due to their high fiber content, which aids in digestion and helps regulate blood sugar levels. They also offer a source of plant-based protein.
Varieties: There are different varieties of wheat berries, including hard red wheat and soft white wheat. The choice of variety can impact the flavor and texture of the cooked wheat berries.
Gluten Content: Wheat berries contain gluten, so they are not suitable for individuals with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. It's important to be aware of this if you or someone in your household has gluten-related dietary restrictions.
In summary, dried wheat berries are a nutritious and versatile whole grain that can be used in various dishes. They are prized for their hearty texture and nutritional benefits, making them a valuable addition to a well-rounded diet. When cooking with dried wheat berries, follow the specific instructions on the packaging or in your recipe to achieve the desired texture and flavor.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this do well as a winter wheat in Texas? Or is it better planted in spring |
Answer: | Good question! Roundup is not applied to any of our grain, making it 100% organic. We always do like to extend some education to our customers with regards to questions like these, though. Roundup is not used in any wheat crops like other crops such as corn or cotton. Roundup can only be applied to crops that are genetically modified (GMO) and since there is no GMO wheat on the market, it is not possible to apply Roundup to wheat. Our crops are 100% organic, but we do like to pass along a little knowledge to our customers from our experience in agriculture. Hope this helps! |

Question: | what is the differance in soft white and hard white wheat, which would probley be the best to get |

Making Flour from Hard Red Wheat
Hard Red Wheat flour can be used for a variety of recipes and is best ground at the medium to coarsest setting on the Lee Household Flour Mill. All stone mills can have potential challenges with grinding gluten-rich grains at the finest setting due to the stone gumming up. To make flour, simply pour the grains into the hopper, select your desired coarseness and mill until the hopper is empty.

Answer: | Rich in Selenium, Selenium is an essential mineral.May Help Lower Cancer Risk, Boosts Your Immune System, Good Source of Plant-Based Protein, Very Easy to Prepare |
Question: | is this organic |
Answer: | 1/3 to 1/2 cup. I use 1/2 cup as a main meal with a mix of chopped veggies |
Question: | do you need to wash before milling |
Answer: | It didn't taste toasted to me. Made a Parmesan garlic couscous. This is the style that is used in Italian wedding soup also. Hope that helps |
Question: | Is there a nutritional difference between the red and white wheat berries |
Answer: | No. Hulless barley is a special type of barley that has a loosely attached hull which falls off during harvesting. With hulled barley, the hulls are removed through minimal processing, leaving the bran layer intact.I have used both and think there is little difference between them. User questions & answers
Question: | are they processed near soybeans |
Answer: | yes, if anywhere on planet earth is near. This answer is equally stupid to most of the answers here in this whole list. I grow wheat for a living. Their is virtually no GMO wheat. Hybrid wheat has nothing to do with GMO. Gluten is not a problem to anyone that does not have ciliac disease. Just go out to the country and buy all you want from a farmer. It is the same thing. He will probably give you all you want because it is worth 6.5 cents a pound on the farm. Get to know a farmer, some day you may need one! |
Question: | Will these sprout? I'm wanting to make sprouted wheat tortillas and sprouted wheat bread |
Answer: | I soaked these for 8 hours, changed the water and soaked another 8. I drained them and left in the mesh bag for 24 hours. I had close to a 100% germination rate- if any didn't sprout, I didn't find any. These are excellent quality wheat berries. |
Question: | I wonder when did you harvest wheat berrys, it only has expiration date. How long do you guys consider best use periode? 4 or 5 years |
Answer: | I have used and ground whole wheat all my life. Wheat, especially hard red winter wheat, stored cool and dry will last almost forever. Weevil is the biggest problem with stored grain. It has to be stored in a way that eliminates oxygen. Short term storage is OK. IF you want to store it for any length of time it needs special precautions. This can be as simple as adding dry ice and then sealing. That will be good until opened. I've gotten weevil in just a few months on my pantry shelf. A few weevil won't hurt anything. Just don't look for them so you don't see them. A bad infestation can remove much of the nutritive value as well as seeming gross. If you see the wheat crawling....you have a problem. My whole wheat flour will get weevil way before the white flour. That should tell us something about the relative nutritive value of the 2. One of my favorite breakfast dishes is whole wheat cereal. You just cook 1 cup wheat (or combination of grains such as pearl barley) 4 cups water and 1t salt till tender. I do it overnight in a crock pot. Then I use honey and milk to serve it. This may seem strange, but I was raised on it. Much better for you than prepared cereal. Cracked wheat is good also. It cooks faster, about 30 minutes, but it will lose a lot of the nutrients because it's been cracked open so it doesn't store long. White wheat, especially soft white wheat, is softer than red wheat and works better for pastries, cookies, cakes and quick breads. |
Question: | Can the flour of this be used to make indian bread (known as chapati / roti/ paratha in india |
Answer: | Yes! I have successfully used Palouse white hard wheat to make roti and paratha. It is essentially atta flour. I like to grind mine between superfine and medium for paratha. There’s a YouTube channel called “Easy Steps” that has some videos on grinding flour for Indian bread. |

Product description
Ancient Grains Whole Grain Spelt Flour
Our farming industry and the American consumer has overlooked Spelt (dinkel) for decades. As a result, we have not seen the same attempts to modify or enhance the commercial viability of spelt grain or farro grain. The degree of gluten in Spelt has not changed in response to overwhelming demand.
St. Hildegard Spelt
Today, the composition of this ancient grain (or, farro whole grain) remains consistent with its ancient form during Hildegard of Bingen's time. This ancient grain offers lower exposure to gluten.
Organic Spelt Wheat
Modern harvesting techniques have resolved many of the challenges related to threshing Spelt, which naturally has a tough outer shell or hull. A tough hull leaves Spelt naturally better protected to thrive in a natural environment.
Ancient Grains Spelt
Like einkorn wheat berries, Spelt grains grow safely in their natural form. The strong hull also means the grain remains fresh and retains its nutrients longer after harvest.
Spelt Berries for Cooking
These dried berries organic can be used in soups and salads in their whole berry form. Also try as a substitute for rice, as spelt rice, spelt pasta, spelt orzo, or even as spelt tortilla.
- ORGANIC & NON-GMO: Spelt wheat berries carefully sourced and packaged to standards inspired by the patron Saint of Spelt grain, Hildegard von Bingen.
- ANCIENT GRAIN: Modern cultivation and genetic modifications to ordinary wheat grain have made gluten more prominent in many of the foods we eat. Spelt grains retain the original integrity of ancient grain berries.
- GLUTEN: Like einkorn wheat, the gluten in organic Spelt wheat is more fragile and water-soluble than that of organic wheat berries. The different gluten structure makes Spelt a superior alternative for people with mild gluten sensitivity.
- IMMUNITY: The water-soluble plant-polysaccharides in organic spelt berries serve as immune-stimulants. These properties help strengthen and promote healthy cells.
- MOOD: Whole Spelt lightens the mood and encourages a relaxed state, due to high phenylalanine and tryptophan content. These amino acids promote contentment.
User questions & answers
Question: | How do I use this product |
Answer: | This product can be used as a substitute for rice in soups and salads. It has a hearty / nutty flavor. I love it in salad, as it adds a meaty texture, like bacon bits. More recipes on healthyhildegard.com. |
Question: | Can I use the grains for sprouting |
Answer: | These grains should absolutely be suitable for sprouting. While they have been rinsed, they have not been soaked. Soaking initiates the sprouting process. |
Question: | Are these suitable for bread baking? Thank you |
Answer: | The Spelt berries are not ideal for bread baking, depending on how you plan to use. Ideally, the cracked spelt or spelt flour work great for baking. |
