  4. Culinary Uses: In some cultures, millet is a staple food. It can be used to make dishes like millet porridge, pilafs, casseroles, and even fermented beverages. In some regions, millet is ground into flour to make flatbreads or used to prepare couscous-like dishes.

  8. Storage: Like other dried grains, dried millet should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place to maintain its freshness and prevent infestations.

  9. Cooking Instructions: To prepare dried millet, rinse it thoroughly and then simmer it in water or broth until it becomes tender, similar to cooking rice. The ratio of water to millet is typically 2:1.

  10. Health Benefits: Millet is considered a nutritious grain choice due to its fiber content, which can aid in digestion, and its rich mineral profile. Some studies suggest that it may have potential health benefits related to heart health and blood sugar control.

Hulled Millet, 6 Pounds — Whole Grain Seeds, Kosher, Raw, Bulk

Food to Live

Based on 162 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Millet grain doesn’t have any gluten contains lots of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. This grain has been a staple in many cuisines for years. And while it’s not as popular as rice, wheat, or oats, it’s gaining more recognition all over the world. The reason for this is simple; millet is delicious, nutritious, and very easy to cook.

Food to Live While Millet, also known as White Proso, is the most popular type of this grain. There are about 500 species of plants that are considered millet, but only a few of them used as food. Pearl and foxglove millet also are popular crops. All types of millet are similar in taste and nutritional value. However, experts believe that white millet was domesticated first. Presumably, as a crop, it dates back to around 10,000 BC.

How to Cook White Millet Proso

Hulled whole grain millet has a rich nutty and mildly sweet flavor. Because of this, the grain tastes fantastic in a variety of sweet and savory dishes. In fact, replacing grains in the recipe with this one can make the dish taste much better.

There are many ways to use millet; it is easy to cook; hulled millet doesn’t need pre-soaking and cooks in less than 30 minutes.

Try to roast dry grain in a pan or skillet for about 5 minutes and add water or broth. Use two parts of liquid per 1 part of the grain. Increase the amount of water to three parts if you want to enjoy pure millet taste in a porridge.

After adding water, bring the pot to a boil and turn down the heat to simmer right away. Do not often stir as hulled millet grain is very tender. Let it simmer for about fifteen minutes, so all water is absorbed. Then, let the pot sit covered for ten minutes and fluff up the cooked grain using a fork.

  • GLUTEN-FREE GRAIN: White Millet is naturally gluten-free and contains a lot of other important plant proteins.
  • RICH IN NUTRIENTS: Hulled Millet contains B vitamins and multiple minerals, as well as a large amount of fiber.
  • DELICIOUS GRAIN SUBSTITUTE: Rich and nutty millet taste makes it a great addition to many recipes. You can use it as a substitute for any grain.
  • TASTES GREAT SWEET AND SAVORY: Use millet in stews or savory pilaf or in sweet porridge. It will always be delicious.
  • EASY TO COOK: Hulled whole grain millet doesn’t need pre-soaking and cooks fast.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this organic and non-GMO
Answer: It does not say on the package. So I am not sure. I use it for cooking soup and porridge..
Question: is this pearl millet? I'm on a diet that specifies sorghum millet
Answer: I think they can be sprouted. My birds have sprouted the red millet before in their water dish (in 1 day's time because it was hot and humid). Also if you soak, rinse, and put in a sprouter or bowl with paper towels growth begins in a few hours so even without the physical sprout it still has the benefits of a sprout. That good bacteria and growth is what matters for health.
Question: When it is cooked, is it soft like rice
Answer: From their website: "Today, there are many millet varieties. Pearl millet and foxtail millet are two common varieties, but we offer proso millet, which has a short growing season and requires little water."
Question: How much is this product in a regular store [not online]
Answer: The picture on the product page says "Non-GMO", but the product I actually received has no such indication on the package. It is GMO millet.

Product description

Fonio is one of the preeminent African superfoods and holds an honored place in West African, and particularly Sahel, culture. Nutritionally, it rivals the Ethiopian artisanal grain teff in how good it is for you, but before we get into that, it is our pleasure to introduce fonio to you. This grain is quickly becoming one of the most popular superfoods in the world and is considered to quickly defeat quinoa as king amongst foodies. Like quinoa, tef, maca and raw cacao, quickly becoming known a tasty superfood for chefs and foodies around the world. Earths Goodness fonio is grown in the Sahel area that borders the Sahara Desert, and it does well in dry and grassy savannah as well as in richer climates. Earths Goodness fonio’s beloved place on West African plates is just as well, because the grain is indubitably good for us. It’s so full of protein that it even has amino acids that other grains don’t, making it a much more complete protein source. Fonio is also rich in iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc and manganese, and has more of these nutrients, serving-per-serving, than other grains. It’s also very high in fiber, which makes it a good carbohydrate as it releases its sugar slowly into the blood stream, making for consistent, high-quality energy over a longer period of time. Compare this with the quick sugar high and subsequent cravings you get from white bread or white rice, and fonio is a much better choice all around. Are you convinced yet?

  • Includes ONE 16 Ounce Bag (453g each) Grown in West Africa.
  • Satisfy hunger to feel full longer - Our all natural Fonio provides a hefty amount of fiber (1g), protein (4g) and low sodium (5mg) per individual serving, helping to satisfy hunger and curb food cravings all day long.
  • Building block for protein synthesis - As a complete vegetarian protein, our super grain Fonio provides a complete range of essential and non-essential amino acids, helping to maintain lean muscle mass and support enzyme production for everyday health at only 180 calories per serving.
  • Enrich modern day recipes - Our whole grain Fonio replaces rice at equal ratios and is even suitable for rice cookers. Add a unique twist to stir-fry, sushi and Mexican rice recipes for added nutrition and a naturally nutty flavor in every spoonful. No fillers, no preservatives, and no artificial ingredients, our non-GMO Fonio is sustainably sourced in accordance with fair trade practices.
  • De-saponized for enhanced flavor - No pesticides and harsh chemical processing, our gluten-free Fonio is mechanically de-saponized and triple washed to remove Fonio's bitter exterior. Hulled Millets

Millet is available in pearled (unhulled) or hulled form. However, it is only prepared as food after being hulled since the grain has a naturally hard, indigestible covering that is removed before it can be considered ready for human consumption (much like Quinoa).

Once out of the hull, Millet seeds resemble tiny yellow beads with dark dots on the side where they are detached from the plant’s stem. Millet has a mild, slightly sweet flavor when cooked and can be prepared in a short period of time.Millet can be used as a traditional cereal, and can also be used in porridge, snacks, and other types of bread. Millet is a good source of carbohydrates and fiber, like other grains. It is also a good source of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and organic compounds that can boost human health in various ways.
