14 best non sugar sweeteners

Non-sugar sweeteners, also known as sugar substitutes or artificial sweeteners, are food additives used to provide sweetness to foods and beverages without the calories and metabolic effects of sugar. These sweeteners are commonly used by individuals seeking to reduce their sugar intake, manage their weight, or control their blood sugar levels. Here is some information about non-sugar sweeteners:

  1. Types of Non-Sugar Sweeteners: There are several types of non-sugar sweeteners, each with its unique properties and uses. Common non-sugar sweeteners include:

    • Aspartame: Sold under brand names like NutraSweet and Equal, aspartame is a low-calorie sweetener often used in diet sodas and sugar-free gum.
    • Sucralose: Marketed as Splenda, sucralose is heat-stable and can be used in cooking and baking. It is often found in sugar-free desserts and beverages.
    • Stevia: Steviol glycosides derived from the Stevia plant are used as a natural non-caloric sweetener. It is available in various forms, including liquid extracts and powdered blends.
    • Saccharin: Saccharin, known for brands like Sweet'N Low, is one of the oldest artificial sweeteners. It is often used in tabletop sweeteners and soft drinks.
    • Monk Fruit Extract: Monk fruit extract is a natural sweetener derived from the monk fruit. It is often combined with other sweeteners to enhance its sweetness.
    • Erythritol: Erythritol is a sugar alcohol that occurs naturally in some fruits. It has fewer calories than sugar and is commonly used in sugar-free gum and baked goods.
  2. Sweetness Intensity: Non-sugar sweeteners are much sweeter than sugar, so they are used in significantly smaller quantities to achieve the desired level of sweetness. This property makes them low in calories and suitable for those watching their calorie intake.

  3. Safety and Regulation: Non-sugar sweeteners approved for use in food and beverages have undergone extensive safety testing by regulatory authorities, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). They are considered safe for consumption within established acceptable daily intake (ADI) levels.

  4. Usage: Non-sugar sweeteners can be used in a variety of ways, including adding to hot or cold beverages, cooking, baking, and as tabletop sweeteners. Some non-sugar sweeteners are heat-stable and can be used in recipes that require heating.

  5. Taste and Texture: While non-sugar sweeteners provide sweetness, they may have a slightly different taste and mouthfeel compared to sugar. Some people may notice a subtle aftertaste with certain sweeteners.

  6. Individual Preferences: Preferences for non-sugar sweeteners can vary widely among individuals. Some people may prefer the taste of one sweetener over another, so it's essential to experiment and find the one that suits your palate.

  7. Health Considerations: Non-sugar sweeteners can be useful for people with diabetes, as they do not significantly affect blood sugar levels. However, some individuals may experience gastrointestinal discomfort when consuming large amounts of sugar alcohols like erythritol.

It's important to use non-sugar sweeteners in moderation and as part of a balanced diet. If you have specific dietary restrictions or health concerns, consult with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian for personalized guidance on sugar substitutes and their suitability for your needs.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the ratio of this sweetener to regular sugar for baking? Is it 1 to
Answer: No you’ll need to add extra. If it calls for one cup sugar you will use 1 1/3 cup Erythritol. It’s what I use to sweeten all my baked goods and I love it!
Question: what is the bag made of, does it contribute anything bad to the product? thanks
Answer: Love the product. Packaging does not contribute smell or taste to the product.
Question: This product is listed as 100% erythritol, but several questions answered by other buyers said it is a mixture of sugar/stevia. Which is it
Answer: Whole Earth makes some different products. This one that is showing is 100% Erythritol, but they make another one called Baking Blend that is sugar/stevia.
Question: In what country is this product made
Answer: USA??? How do you know? In fact -- counry of origin is far from clear. Company's FAQ on this product says only: Whole Earth Erythritol is manufactured for Whole Earth Sweetener Company, LLC. http://wholeearthsweetener.com/faqs/#collapse-3035 Don't recall seeing any statement of origin on the product's packaging, last I checked. Nor will you see Made in USA in any of the product images here. Suppose, then, that Whole Earth Sweetener Co is purchasing all of their erythritol from a US company. That doesn't necessarily say anything about product origin. The erythritol could be made elsewhere, shipped here in bulk, and repackaged in the US. Whole Earth Sweetener Co may or may not be aware of this. That issue imo goes squarely to business practices. It's the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and not the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that governs Made in USA labelling. Foods and sweeteners have no source-of-origin labelling requirements: U.S. content must be disclosed on automobiles and textile, wool, and fur products. There’s no law that requires most other products sold in the U.S. to be marked or labeled Made in USA or have any other disclosure about their amount of U.S. content. However, manufacturers and marketers who choose to make claims about the amount of U.S. content in their products must comply with the FTC’s Made in USA policy. https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/complying-made-usa-standard As Whole Earth Sweetener Co does not publicly disclose the maker of their erythritol, consumers are -- purposefully to my mind -- left in the dark on this. One quick swipe with Occam's razor: Were this erythritol made in the USA, then why wouldn't Whole Earth Sweetener Co clearly say so -- both on their packaging and in their published FAQ? By keeping mum publicly, Whole Earth Sweetener Co is certainly staying on the right side of applicable FTC rules.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this product contain any carbs? Thank you
Answer: Hi Ashley. I had dark red/burgandy hair from year of packet hair colors. It turned my hair irange at the roots then darker shades at different parts going down depending on when it was coloured. It would be the same for black hair just the end result wont be orange. My hair dresser friend suggested it to me and i saw her the next day and she colored my hair. She actually did foils to lighten it. So you mught need to color your hair right after. Actually you definately would. Please beware it smells like rotten eggs and dries your hair out but its worth it.
Question: What is the difference, if any, between the Lakanto Golden Sweetener and the Lakanto White Sweetener
Answer: The answer is complicated. This removed the particles from inside the hair shaft, but will not remove cuticle staining. There is no way to know if you have cuticle staining until you try it. Nothing removes cuticle staining. Only growing it out and cutting it off. I had a similar; though not exactly the same, situation. I had about 5 years of black dye and one of the layers was a purple/black. This removed some black dye, a fair amount actually, but not all of it. The top part of my hair where there was only a few layers, it revealed my natural hair. The bottom was a washed out black, and the mids were somewhere in between. The purple red shade became more pronounced through the mids. Basically to get back to your natural from several years of black, you will have to grow your hair out, but this did help quicken the process. That being said, if you have just one layer of black and you used a 10 developer, this may very well work fully.
Question: What is the percentage by volume of erythritol and what percentage is Luo Han Guo
Answer: Sorry no. When you color your hair blonde you are removing pigment from your hair not adding to it. Unfortunately you will have to die it with a light brown color closest to your natural color and wait for the roots to grow out. Or just let the roots grow out .
Question: What are all the ingredients listed for this product
Answer: You might need 2 boxes for thicker hair but it should help remove black. Black and red are harder to remove but the extra strength removed my red.
Question: Is there a ledgible Nutrition label
Answer: This should work great in getting black out
Question: does this work well with an air fryer
Answer: I used this on dry hair. I didn't shampoo that day. I had great results! My hair is short - long pixie and I had rainbow pinwheel hair that was previously bleached to level 10. So, a bit of a battle in my hair :) My hair was a little dry (naturally) but not as bad as I was thinking. Best of luck!
Question: How much cups does it make
Answer: I think it will, but I haven't used it personally on vampire red; just black
Question: How long does the product keep once you have made it
Answer: yes it needs to be mixed with a developer in order to work. my hair is super dark and I used a 20 vol. developer and it didn't quite lift the color off all my hair so if you have super dark hair it's in your best interest to get a 30 vol. and the instructions should be on the pack of how to use it and for how long
Question: Can this be used to make treats
Answer: Yes. It can remove anything! It removed all of the black from my hair. It's a great product.
Question: Does this have tapioca fiber in it seller only please
Answer: I wouldn't. That's a whole lot of stripping color. Really damaging to the hair. I would use this instead of bleach to limit damage.

Truvia Cargill

Based on 5 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Sweetness is meant to be enjoyed. That's why Truvia created products meant to reduce sugar, not taste. The clean, sweet flavor contained in Truvia Natural Sweetener packets comes from nature in the form of the stevia leaf. Leaves don't dissolve well in beverages or baked goods, so we extract the sweetness from the stevia leaf. Because stevia leaf extract is 200x sweeter than sugar, we balance the sweetness with erythritol, a sweetener produced by fermentation. Erythritol is also found in fruits like grapes and pears. This gives you the white crystals you're used to without the calories. This 500-count box is perfect for coffee shops, restaurants, at work or in the office.

  • Zero-calorie sugar substitute made with stevia leaf extract, erythritol, and natural flavors
  • Box contains 500 packets of Truvia natural stevia sweetener

User questions & answers

Question: Does this have any "after taste" like some do? Thanks
Answer: Nope. No after taste like Stevia :) I love this brand of erythritol
Question: what is erythritol made from
Answer: Erythritol is: Fermented – it is made by fermenting the natural sugar found in corn. Heat stable up to 160 degrees C. Non-caloric – While most sugar alcohols are low calorie, erythritol has zero calories. Non-glycemic - Does not raise blood sugar – erythritol is considered suitable for people with diabetes because it does not raise plasma glucose or insulin levels. The easiest sugar alcohol to digest – more than 90% of erythritol is absorbed in the small intestine, so minimal amounts reach the colon where other sugar alcohols end up causing diarrhea and other symptoms. Studies have shown that erythritol is even easier to digest than xylitol. Noncarcinogenic– studies have shown that erythritol, like xylitol, does not have carcinogenic properties. An antioxidant – erythritol helps to fight free radicals, responsible for the aging process. It is considered to be even more efficient than other sugar alcohols because it is so readily absorbed and yet not metabolized (it is excreted unchanged). Source, see: https://bodyecology.com/articles/erythritol_what_you_need_to_know_natural_sugar_substitute.php They recommend an interesting product I have not tried. I am using a mixture of half erythritol and half xylitol, and so far I find that sweetener to be quite acceptable.
Question: Where is this sourced? U.S. or China
Answer: The source is important, pls be transparent. And made in usa is important, if the sources are from definitely will not buy.
Question: What is the difference? "Anthony’s uses cane sugar fermentation vs corn slurry fermentation
Answer: In both processes glucose (usually from cornstarch) is converted into erythritol. Anthony's Erythritol used to have a statement in their back label "Product of USA ...derived from cane sugar" but they removed this statement in mid 2019 when the compnay was sold. So it is now probably made from non-GMO corn in China or from from GMO corn in the USA. FYI erythritol is widely promoted as a natural sweetener for being found in nature but the store-bought erythritol is in fact a synthetic sweetener - it is not directly isolated or extracted from a plant or parts of a plant.

What Puts the Sweet in Swerve?

The secret to Swerve’s zero-calorie sweetness is a combination of erythritol and oligosaccharides.

If you’ve ever visited a brewery, you’ve gotten a peek into how fermentation works. Erythritol is made by fermenting glucose with Moniliella pollinis, a natural microorganism. It also naturally occurs in many fruits and vegetables like melons, grapes and asparagus. Erythritol is classified by the FDA as a zero-calorie, 4-carbon sugar alcohol that does not affect blood glucose.

Oligosaccharides are sweet, non-digestible carbohydrates sourced from select fruits and starchy root vegetables. Oligosaccharides are prebiotic fibers, so they’re not only tasty, but they can help stimulate beneficial bacteria in your gut.

Swerve: Our Passion for Health and Quality

Swerve is a small, independently owned company headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Swerve team, together with co-founder Andress Blackwell, developed Swerve as a tool for blood sugar stabilization. Helping educate consumers on the dangers of excessive sugar consumption has been a passion of Andress’ for 15+ years.

Swerve is committed to sourcing only the highest quality raw materials available.

Browns & Caramelizes

One of the unique functions of Swerve is its ability to brown and caramelize like sugar. Even when making Crème Brule, you can get a crunchy, tasty torched crust. Swerve also performs extremely well in meringues, allowing you to accomplish a stiff peak. Use Swerve just like you would sugar for recipes that require caramelizing.

Ketogenic Friendly

If you’re looking for a keto friendly sweetener, Swerve is your go-to. With zero net carbohydrates, Swerve does not impact blood sugar or insulin levels. You can use it easily in all of your low-carb baking and cooking recipes without the worry of a blood sugar spike. Just like fiber, when counting macros you can subtract any Swerve that is used in your recipe to get a true net carb count.

Measures Just Like Sugar

When it comes to baking and cooking, Swerve is the easiest and tastiest sugar replacement to use. Cup-for-cup, Swerve replaces sugar in all of your recipes. If you need a half cup of sugar; simply replace with a half cup of Swerve. And you won’t get any bitter aftertaste that is often associated with high intensity sweeteners like stevia and monkfruit.

Why is Sugar so bad?

Consuming sugar has many bad side effects, with almost no positives other than sweet things taste good and make us happy. What is Monk Fruit?

Monkfruit, or known by the other name "lo han guo," is a small melon native to China. It's hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, yet has nearly none of the calores, has zero impact on blood sugar levels, and no nasty side effects. This natural sweetener is perfect for low-carb diets and overall health conscious people.

What is Erythritol?

Erythritol is a sugar alcohol naturally derived from corn. It contains almost no caloric value and does not spike blood sugar levels or raise cholesterol or any other markers. Erythritol is much more mild than other sugar alcohols and does not have the same digestive side effects like bloating. User questions & answers

Question: What is the difference
Answer: Hello, Pyure Organic Stevia All-Purpose Blend is our most versatile product. It can be used for all applications from cooking, baking, sprinkling on cereal or sweetening coffees and teas. It is organic, non-gmo and has the same taste and feel as sugar. Pyure All-Purpose is also a 2:1 ratio, so for every cup of sugar you can replace with 1/2 cup of All-Purpose Blend. This product blends organic erythritol and organic stevia together which are both excellent options for those with sugar sensitivities/diabetics. Pyure All-Purpose also comes in a few sizes: 16 ounce Pouch, 10 ounce flip-top tub, 80ct and 1000ct sachets. Pyure Bakeable Blend on the other hand is currently not organic or non-gmo, however we are working towards having it being organic and non-gmo this year. This product is more of a sugar-reducer since we recommend that for every cup of sugar, you replace half with the bakeable blend. For example if your recipe requires 1 cup of sugar you use 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup of the bakeable blend. This is to ensure for proper crispness and browning. The Bakeable Blend can also be used in a 1:1 ratio if you do not want to use sugar. Pyure Bakeable Blend is a blend of maltodextrin and organic stevia, and comes in a 10 ounce pouch. I hope that helps. Thanks for the question W. Swanton.
Question: item shown for $17 .86, is it 16oz. package
Answer: Yes, the item you are referring is one 16oz. package. However, I purchase the 2-pack offering (2 ea. 16 oz. packages) for around $25.00.
Question: Why is this misleadingly presented item not returnable when it contains hardly anything but erythritol and only trivial traces of stevia extract
Answer: Pure stevia is a powder that is super sweet and almost unusable. It is mixed with other sweeteners like erythritol as a carrying agent. I also have a small bottle of the pure powder. It comes with a 25mg scoop. 25mg is a really small amount. I use about 1/3 of the scoop to sweeten a mug of coffee. Any more than that and my coffee is too sweet. This doesn't sound so bad but just try and get that tiny bit of powder in the sccop. The powder is so fine that it clings together, coats the handle of the scoop, and as you tap the scoop against the side of your mug the powder on the scoop handle falls into your coffee also. Like I said the pure powder is not really a usable form of this item and it works much better when it is mixed with something that can be granulated. Don't let the ratios fool you.
Question: what is the ratio of erythritol and stevia
Answer: I include this comment by seller " ...lthough erythritol is the first ingredient by weight, stevia accounts for over 90% of the sweetness. Pyure Stevia Extract is roughly 350x sweeter than sugar, while erythritol is 70% as sweet as sugar. The reason that this blend is less concentrated is because this erythritol-stevia blend offers the bulk/volume that the 1 cup of sugar in your recipe would have required, without losing mass in your cakes or cookies. Erythritol is a non-nutritive carrying agent that the stevia is able to attach itself to, creating a sweetener that is easy to use, versatile and safe for those with sugar sensitivities. . . User questions & answers

Question: how is this for baking? does it leave granular residue like my erythritol
Answer: All Swerve products are ideal for baking. Since Swerve measures just like sugar, there are no conversion charts needed when creating your favorite recipes. If your recipe calls for half a cup of sugar, you simply replace it with half a cup of Swerve. Swerve mixes in well, and leaves no residue.
Question: Does swerve lower the freezing point? Some recipes for ice cream claim swerve keeps it soft
Answer: No, Swerve does not lower the freezing point of ice cream or other frozen goods. Heavy cream or 1 tbsp of vodka usually help keep ice cream soft!
Question: What is the carb count on the Gluten Free Swerve? Is it suitable for a low/no carb diet
Answer: In a 1 tsp serving of Swerve, there are 3g carbohydrates from Erythritol, and 0g sugar. However, the carbohydrates in Swerve do not affect blood sugar, so there are 0g net carbs in Swerve per serving.
Question: Does this have a funky aftertaste like Stevia
Answer: NO!! I don't like Stevia. It has a horrible aftertaste. Swerve does not give an aftertaste in any of the desserts I made. Something IT DOES do is if you drink water after eating something with Swerve in it you will taste sweet. It was a little strange but was no issue. I would drink about 5 sips of water and then the sweetness would be gone. But it was sweet and not a bad taste.
