12 best organic maple syrups

Organic maple syrup is a natural sweetener made from the sap of sugar maple trees. It is a popular and delicious addition to various culinary dishes, particularly breakfast items like pancakes, waffles, and oatmeal. Here's what you should know about organic maple syrup:

  1. Source: Organic maple syrup is derived from the sap of sugar maple trees, primarily in regions such as the northeastern United States and eastern Canada, where sugar maple trees are abundant.

  2. Organic Certification: To be labeled as "organic," maple syrup must be produced according to strict organic farming practices, which prohibit the use of synthetic chemicals, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms in the maple groves.

  3. Tapping and Collection: Organic maple syrup production begins with tapping the sugar maple trees in the late winter or early spring when temperatures fluctuate between freezing at night and thawing during the day. This temperature variation creates pressure changes that cause sap to flow from the trees.

  4. Sap Boiling: After collection, the sap is boiled down to concentrate the sugars and reduce the water content. This process can take several hours and involves careful monitoring to achieve the desired sugar content.

  5. Grade Classification: Maple syrup is graded based on color and flavor. The classification may vary by region, but common grades include Grade A (Light, Medium, Amber, Dark) and Grade B. Grade A syrups are generally lighter in color and have a milder flavor, while Grade B syrup is darker and has a stronger, more robust taste.

  6. Nutritional Content: Organic maple syrup is a natural sweetener and contains minerals like calcium, potassium, and manganese. It is also a source of antioxidants. However, it is still high in sugars, so it should be consumed in moderation.

  7. Versatile Use: Organic maple syrup is not limited to breakfast dishes. It can be used as a sweetener in various recipes, including desserts, salad dressings, marinades, and glazes.

  8. Storage: Maple syrup should be stored in a cool, dark place. Once opened, it is best kept in the refrigerator to maintain its quality and prevent spoilage.

  9. Sustainability: Organic maple syrup production typically follows sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. The tapping and collection methods are designed to minimize harm to the trees, and producers often take measures to preserve the health of the forest ecosystem.

  10. Purity: Organic maple syrup is typically free from additives, preservatives, and artificial flavors. It is a pure and natural sweetener.

In summary, organic maple syrup is a pure and natural sweetener made from the sap of sugar maple trees. It is produced using organic farming practices, free from synthetic chemicals, and is available in various grades with different flavor profiles. It can be used in a wide range of culinary applications and is valued for its natural sweetness and unique flavor.

Better for You

Maple is nature's purest sweetener. Nothing is added. No preservatives. No artificial colors or flavors. Maple syrup is one simple ingredient that is filled with essential nutrients, minerals, and antioxidants, and is the only sweetener that delivers manganese, vitamin B2, zinc, magnesium, calcium, and potassium in every drop.

The Source

Butternut Mountain Farm Maple Syrup starts in the forests of the Green Mountain State. Over the past 40 years we've built relationships with about 350 select sugarmakers - people whose stories we know and practices we respect. The farmers with whom we work understand maple and share our commitment to maintaining the health and sustainability of our forests, and are committed to making the highest quality syrup found in the world.

Perfect Taste

It's all Grade A. The classses of pure maple syrup are based on color and flavor. They do not relate to quality. The grades are meant to help identify the right flavor profile for the palate or recipe. As a rule, the darker the maple syrup color, the more robust the flavor.

Maple Makes it Memorable

Forget pancakes, there are a lot of great ways to get maple into your daily diet. We eat maple every day, often as an ingredient in entrees you might not expect. Maple syrup & maple sugar bake up very similarly to cane sugar. Substitute about ¾ the volume of cane sugar with maple syrup, and reduce the other liquids to accommodate for any extra liquid. In the case of maple sugar, a one-to-one substitution generally works just fine.

What is Pure Maple Syrup?

Pure maple syrup comes from trees, not cornfields. The mighty maple - a tree indigenous to North America that boasts dramatic fall color and sports that iconic leaf - is the source of this sweet elixir. Each spring “maple sugar makers” head out to the native woods of eastern North America to collect the maple tree’s sap. Through a careful process of collection, concentration and boiling, the sap is transformed into the richly flavored amber colored syrup of which we are all so fond – 100% pure maple syrup. Through our commitment to careful stewardship, we can harvest sap from the same trees for centuries without diminishing the resource.

Pure maple contains no preservatives, artificial colors or flavors. It is just one simple ingredient with nothing added. Pure maple syrup is entirely natural and essentially wild - a thoroughly wholesome sweetener straight from the forest to your table.

Welcome to Butternut Mountain Farm

At Butternut Mountain Farm, we are committed to the natural sweetness, flavor nuances, and versatility of pure maple. A Vermont based, family owned company, we are wholly committed to ensuring that the product you receive is of the highest quality. Our family has been deeply involved in the science, art and practice of maple sugaring and the Vermont Maple Industry since the 1940’s. It is a legacy and heritage we’re proud to carry forward. Our story has become greater than that of just our own family. It extends to all those with whom we work – the sugarmakers that supply us, the customers whom we supply, and the Butternut Mountain Farm crew. We are committed to excellent stewardship of our woodlands, and acting with integrity and respect toward the communities that sustain us. From managing forest lands, to packaging and distributing maple syrup, we strive to connect our work from tree to table.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the plastic 32 oz container BPA free
Answer: Shipping weight is listed as 3# so you can safely assume that it is about 1.25kg (1250g) or slightly more or just under 2.9# dry weight. That includes the container, of course. Mine just came yesterday and we are getting ready to pour out some buckwheat pancakes: can't wait! This is by far the best I have found on Amazon and I have tried several. Just a biscuit corner dipped in it told me it was a step up above previous brands.
Question: What is the difference between the dark and amber colored maple syrup? Flavor
Answer: Pure maple syrup is not raw. It comes from the sap of Sugar Maple trees, which is unique to North America. Each spring “maple sugar makers” head out to the native woods of eastern North America to collect the maple tree’s sap. Through a careful process of collection and boiling, the sap is transformed into richly flavored pure maple syrup. To see how we make our maple syrup, visit our website at the following link: There is a neat little video at the bottom of the page. http://butternutmountainfarm.com/about/maple-source
Question: What is the shelf life
Answer: Our 100% Pure Maple Syrup is one simple ingredient - the sap of the North American Sugar Maple Tree. Nutrients naturally found in pure maple syrup, include zinc, potassium, manganese, thiamine, calcium, iron, magnesium, and riboflavin. Pure Maple Syrup is a pure natural sweetener, nothing is added. No preservatives. No flavorings. No artificial colors. The caloric value of maple syrup is 52 per tablespoon, compared to 60 in sugar and 64 in honey. Enjoy!
Question: Should I put it in the refrigerator after opening the lid
Answer: Here is what I found doing a Google search: For long term storage, the Association says that maple syrup retains its flavor best when kept in the freezer (it will not freeze solid). StillTasty.com indicates that 100 percent pure maple syrup should keep for a year unopened in the pantry, a year opened in the refrigerator, and indefinitely in the freezer.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this maple syrup instead of hfcs in my pies? Especially pecan pie. I hate that hfcs crap
Answer: According to America's Test Kitchen or Cooks Country, yes. One of those shows actually featured Mrs Abraham "Mary Todd" Lincolns' Pecan Pie Recipie. Of course in that time, there was no Karo or HFCS. Maple syrup, honey and molasses were the only "liquid" sugars available so... I'd recommend researching that recipie. She was a "Southern Belle" from Virginia and quite fond of Pecan Pie.
Question: Do I need to refrigerate this after opening? Do I have to with all pure maple syrups
Answer: It should be refrigerated after opening. Any pure maple syrup can mold if stored at room temperature. Just take it out of the refrigerator a while before you intend to use it.
Question: what is the difference between Grade A & B maple syurp
Answer: As of Jan 1, 2015, Vermont has adopted new international grading standards, and the new grades are as follows; Grade A Golden Color with Delicate Taste (formally “Grade A - Fancy”), Grade A Amber Color with Rich Taste (formally “Grade A - Medium Amber”) and Grade A Dark with Robust Taste (formally “Grade B”). If you are looking for formally “Grade B” syrup, it has been re-named “Grade A Dark Robust”. It is the same exact syrup, but with an updated name. You can see how the new grades map to the old Vermont grades on our About Our Syrup page at: https://www.hiddenspringsmaple.com/about-syrup
Question: bpa free jug
Answer: The jug does not specifically state BPA free, but the recycling code number stamped on the bottom is "2" so that means it is made of high density polyethylene. Any number between 1-6 is supposed to mean BPA free.

The Craft of Maple Sugaring

Coombs Family Farms has produced pure maple syrup for seven generations by taking special care of our ancient sugar maple trees. As small family farmers, we understood there are no shortcuts producing great tasting maple syrup.

We farm our own land, produce organic maple syrup and package our own pure maple products. Coombs also sources maple syrup from over 3,000 small independent family farms that share our commitment to quality, environmental stewardship and sustainable forest management.

Small is a Big Idea

At Coombs Family Farms, we support small family farms because we believe they provide more than high quality food. They help restore those lost feelings of connection and meaning by providing opportunities for us to play a better role in determining where the foods we eat come from, how our food is produced, and how it gets to our table. Small farms also strengthen rural economies, preserve important ecosystems, and help to protect a way of life that is increasingly under threat.

Seven Generations of Stewardship

Since the mid-1800’s, the Coombs family has been acting as responsible stewards of the forest, following a ‘sustainable’ approach to agriculture long before anyone had a specific name for it – or could conceive of any other way to farm. As part of a fabric of nearly 8000 maple farmers who are all preserving maple forests, Coombs Family Farms is doing more than making maple. We are helping to preserve crucial habitat for thousands of distinct plants and animals that need large intact tracts of forest to survive.

Get Real - Taste the Truth

In 1887, the first breakfast syrup that wasn’t pure maple was introduced. It was made of 45% maple syrup and 55% corn syrup. Because it was less expensive than real maple syrup, it became an instant hit. By the 1990s, most imitation syrup brands had eliminated maple syrup from their products entirely, opting to use high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), artificial flavorings and artificial colors instead. As a result, labeling laws in the United States were enacted to prohibit artificial syrups from using the word maple in their names.

Certified Organic Maple Syrup

Strict guidelines for organic maple syrup producers are as detailed as they are tough, but their purpose is deeply humanitarian, helping to protect health of consumers and the planet on which we live. Organic agriculture ensures the long-term health of both wildlife and humans by strengthening soil from which the crops are cultivated. Rather than viewing soil, plants, animals, humans and the planet separately, the principles of organic farming are based upon treating all of these as one interconnected entity.

Organic Grade A Dark/Robust

With a color and maple flavor more intense than Amber/Rich, this versatile grade is great as a topping and for cooking. Its strong maple flavor also lends itself to meat glazes, cooking recipes, and on top of waffles, pancakes, or oatmeal.

Organic Grade A Amber/Rich

Known for its smooth maple flavor and slightly darker than the Golden/Delicate grade. This distinctive taste is produced mid-season when the temperatures start to warm. Its unique and subtle flavor is most often used for table syrup.

Organic Maple Sugar

Organic maple sugar is the secret ingredient for adding a touch of unique character, flavor and sweetness to your favorite foods and drinks. Sweet but interesting, and not as sweet as conventional sugar.

Exclusively for Amazon Fresh

Maple syrup harvest is a labor of love. Fully dependent on weather, the season could be ten weeks or just a few days depending on when the weather warms up and the maples stop producing. At the first hint of spring, sap will begin to flow in the sugar maples of Vermont. This is the beginning of harvest, producing a gorgeous nectar that is the first golden delicate maple syrup of the season. Each year is a guessing game as to how long the sap will run from these magnificent maple trees. Our first harvest produces a buttery, delicate maple flavor with notes of vanilla. Now you can experience the flavors of the first harvest, something typically only reserved for the sugar makers themselves.

Single Grove Sugarbush

This syrup is produced by a single grove of sugar maples in Cambridge, Vermont. This forest not only produces a delicious maple syrup, but it serves as a sanctuary for its surrounding habitat. Certified Bird Friendly from the National Audubon Society, this maple forest is home to migratory birds and indigenous wildlife. And every single tree in our sugarbush will act as the lungs for the biosphere, taking in excess carbon and breathing out oxygen.

Runamok Maple

Runamok Maple is a certified organic, specialty maple syrup producer based in northern Vermont where they own a certified bird-friendly 1,000-acre sugarbush. By taking a more culinary-focused approach to Vermont's iconic sweetener, Runamok aims to change the way people think about and use maple syrup.

Answer: This is a plastic bottle, not glass
Question: Why does it have to be refrigerated after opening
Answer: Refrigeration prolongs shelf life and prevents mold.
Question: What oil is used as the defoamer
Answer: This is not a question for end users. Pure maple syrup does not contain any oil as an ingredient. Foaming does not necessarily happen when boiling sap, but when it does, it can also be skimmed.

User questions & answers

Question: do you need to refrigerate after opening
Answer: The coffee flavor is 130 calories for 2scoops in water. Chocolate is 180 calories.
Question: Is Coombs maple syrup formaldehyde free
Answer: You can have 1 scoop if you want to extend the coffee amount. However I tried doing it with 1 scoop and the flavor was really watered down. 2 scoops really does have a well balanced flavor and personally, I serve it with ice and shake it to mix. 2 scoops keeps the flavor once the ice melts and with 1 it just seems like odd tasting water after a while. That's just personal preference. I haven't tried 3 scoops, which on the bag it says you can but I feel like I would be vibrating with caffeine.
Question: bpa-free container
Answer: It comes out to be less than $2.50 Per serving which is roughly half the cost of a small premium sugary coffee at Starbucks. I call this a win win.
Question: What is the difference between Grade A and Grade B
Answer: I pretty sure they would be great since the consistency is similar to powered sugar....
