Lemon grass is a semi-tropical to tropical grass, so no, we can't grow it all year unless we bring it in for the winter. However, that being said, get your stalks now, root them, and then plant them outside for cooking, insect control, and just plain grassiness in a planter.I start about 10-12 stalks of lemon grass in a large glass jar with ample room, submerged in about an inch to 2 in of water each spring. I set them on a sunny windowsill, and when they're well rooted, I move them to a large planter on the deck. I've done this for several years. The grass is fragrant, it is a mosquito repellant, and this year I plan to use the grass in recipes I've found on the net. I've never brought them indoors in the fall, but might do so this year. |
