13 best olive oil for cooking
Olive oil is a popular and widely used cooking oil that is extracted from olives, the fruit of the olive tree. It is a staple in Mediterranean cuisine and is known for its distinct flavor, versatility, and various health benefits. Here is some information about olive oil for cooking:
Types of Olive Oil:
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO): This is the highest quality and most flavorful olive oil. It is made from pure, cold-pressed olives and has no additives. It is typically used for salads, dipping, and for finishing dishes.
- Virgin Olive Oil: Also derived from the first pressing of olives, virgin olive oil has a slightly lower acidity level and milder flavor compared to extra virgin.
- Pure Olive Oil: This is a blend of virgin and refined olive oils. It has a milder flavor and is suitable for general cooking and frying.
- Light Olive Oil: Despite the name, "light" refers to the mild flavor, not the calorie content. It is a refined oil that can withstand higher cooking temperatures and is often used for frying and baking.
Flavor and Aroma:
- Extra virgin olive oil is known for its rich, fruity, and sometimes peppery flavor. The flavor profile can vary depending on the region and type of olives used.
Smoke Point:
- The smoke point of olive oil varies depending on the type. Extra virgin olive oil has a lower smoke point compared to refined olive oils, making it more suitable for low to medium heat cooking methods like sautéing and drizzling.
Health Benefits:
- Olive oil is a key component of the Mediterranean diet, which is associated with various health benefits. It is rich in monounsaturated fats, which are considered heart-healthy. It also contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
Storage:
- Olive oil should be stored in a cool, dark place to prevent oxidation and maintain its quality. It's best to use it within a year of purchase.
Culinary Uses:
- Olive oil is incredibly versatile and can be used for various cooking methods such as sautéing, roasting, grilling, and baking. It's also commonly used in salad dressings, marinades, and dips.
Choosing Quality:
- When purchasing olive oil, look for reputable brands and check for certifications like "PDO" (Protected Designation of Origin) or "PGI" (Protected Geographical Indication), which indicate that the oil comes from a specific region and meets certain quality standards.
Remember, while this information is accurate based on my last training data in 2023, it's always a good idea to double-check any specific details or recommendations from trusted culinary sources or experts.

Our Premium Olive Oils
This Colavita Premium Selection Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the quintessential everyday oil that is well balanced between fruit and spice and delicate in flavor. We have sourced selections from new harvest oils to create this traditional Colavita flavor, which represents the Colavita family legacy. Cold production obtained exclusively from olives harvested in one or more of these countries: Italy (I), Greece (GR), Spain (E) or Portugal (P). Imported from Italy, this Premium Selection Extra Virgin Olive Oil bears the North American Olive Oil Association (NAOOA) Quality Seal, which means it has been tested for both quality and authenticity according to the International Olive Council (IOC) standards.
As a trusted family company we want to ensure our customers that our products are authentic. The Cermet seal certifies that Colavita Premium Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil is obtained exclusively from olives harvested and pressed in Italy.
What is Extra Virgin?
'Extra' is the highest grade for olive oil. Virgin oil may be called 'extra' if it has less than 0.8% free oleic acid, and if it exhibits superior taste and aroma. Thus, the 'extra' in extra virgin olive oil means 'premium' or simply, 'the best'.
Why Olive Oil?
Extra virgin olive oils are not processed or refined. Extra virgin olive oil is essentially 'fresh squeezed' from the fruit of the olive tree, without alteration of the color, taste, and nutrients or vitamins. Because of the integrity of the product, and its antioxidant components, extra virgin olive oil will keep longer than all other vegetable oils.
Better than Butter?
Colavita olive oils can be used in place of butter or margarine in many recipes, such as on vegetables, rice, potatoes, and–yes–even baking! To try olive oil in your recipe, try our olive oil recipe converter.
Olive Oil Certification Programs
North American Olive Oil Association (NAOOA).
Only organization collecting samples off the shelf at the point of retail sale, which is especially important in measuring quality, which can change over time or with handling.
Only organization performing the full International Olive Council (IOC) tests for authenticity (i.e., purity).
Participants cannot choose the samples or where they come from.
Use highly experienced IOC testing facilities, most frequently in Italy or Spain, two of the largest olive oil producing and consuming nations in the world.
Grades of Olive Oil
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
The highest grade and most versatile due to the range of flavor profiles available. Virgin oil must be unrefined, have less than 0.8% free oleic acid and exhibit superior taste and aroma.
Virgin Olive Oil
Virgin olive oil is also unrefined but has a higher level of oleic acid and less bold flavor than extra virgin olive oil.
Olive Oil
Olive oil is a blend of virgin and refine. Heat and chemicals are used in the process of extracting oil and removing flaws. Olive oil contains less than 1% of oleic acid and is a household all-purpose cooking oil.
Olive Pomace Oil
Olive pomace oil is a lesser quality. It is a blend of refined pomace oil and virgin olive oil. Its mild taste is the result of a refining process using chemicals.
Refined Oil
Refined olive oil is made from refining virgin olive oils that have a high acidity level to eliminate defects. It is generally tasteless, colorless, and has no odor.

Answer: | Contact Amazon Customer Service . They will have all of the details as to what transpired and can initiate the refund process for you. |
Question: | What is the expiration date? I see on the bottle in the display images a best by date of |
Answer: | I purchased this product in 2015 or early 2016 so I can't vouch for the expiration date, however I do check all dates on everything I purchase and their would have been an issue if something was expired upon receipt. Please take in mind the picture they use is for the product display purposes only and only showing what the current product looks like now, they do not have to change pictures according to an expiration date running out. |
Question: | Are the bottles BPA free |
Answer: | Yes, they are made of BPA-free polyethylene. |
Question: | Does this product come in glass or plastic containers |
Answer: | Very thick green plastic so the oil protects from light. I read about it and glass is not always good for olive oil and the green color helps a lot to keep the oil fresh and it is a very solid container It is also safer at transportation and in the kitchen... not sure I would like to have glass container deliver |

Answer: | not knowing your definition of "organic" I can only tell you is is NON-GMO Verified, KETO Certified, PALEO Certified, WHOLE 30 Certified. And per the website, has State of California Certification that no other substances are used to cut the EVOO, so I consider it pure. |
Question: | Is this from 100% california grown olives? i know what the post says, but comments on another california olive ranch product makes me wary |
Answer: | The bottles labled Destination Series, and harvested in the 2017-2018 harvest season are not from 100% California grown olives. The label on the basic bottle you can find in stores now says Destination Series and says the olives are sourced from growers in California, Argentina, Chile, and Portugal, then refined and bottled in California. It does NOT have the California Olive Oil Council seal. It does have a seal in place of that saying it is certified Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I have an older bottle on hand from the 2015 harvest. The label says it uses 100% California grown olives and it has the California Olive Oil Council seal. This is the one Cooks Illustrated recommended where they explained olive sourcing and why it is better to buy from companies that bottle close to and soon after harvest. Many loyal customers, as you can see in the reviews, are upset about this, thinking California Olive Ranch betrayed them. They have been buying for a while and probably didn't look closely at the label. I can't blame them for feeling baited and switched. If this disappoints you, as it did me, wait for the next harvest before dismissing California Olive Ranch entirely. I have no affiliation or insider knowledge but I believe this is only a temporary change due to a bad harvest. In fact, the company's CEO is on record in the NY Times as saying the 2018 California olive harvest was a disaster for growers due to the unseasonably cold winter (elsewhere, it was reported it sent CA olive oil manufactures scrambling to find olives to stay afloat and meet demand) and that they had established partnerships with other countries a few years ago in case of this very situation. He also said at least 26% of the oil in each Destination Series bottle is from California. It was also in the news late last year that California Olive Ranch is expanding their plantings by 2000 acres, which should help mitigate less productive years. |

Answer: | Thank you for the inquiry! You can also find this information at http://filippoberio.com/faqs/. |
Question: | How was this oil refined, any chemicals used |
Answer: | No, it is not a glass bottle. |
Question: | Does this oil have high smoking point? I want to use it for frying |
Answer: | Our Extra Light Olive Oil is created by blending high quality Virgin olive oil with refined olive oil to create the grade known as “Olive Oil.” This process maintains the fatty acids of the oil, which are rich in oleic acid, and gives the oil a mild taste and delicate flavor which is useful for all-purpose cooking. Refined olive oil is obtained from Virgin olive oil by refining methods which reduce free acidity and the strong tastes of the initial Virgin olive oil and that do not lead to alterations in the original triglyceride structure. |

Answer: | I was skeptical of this as well (a popular sub sandwich chain does it) - but if you check the ingredients, they list the what and the where. Just olive oil ^_^ The “Mediterranean blend” is referring to the olive origins - Spain, Italy, and Greece. At this price, definitely worth a try! |

Olive oil provides weight loss Olive oil increases metabolism Olive oil facilitates digestion Olive oil protects skin health Olive oil protects heart health Olive oil retards aging Olive oil prevents gallbladder Olive oil strengthens cell walls Olive oil reduces cancer risk.(taken from the internet.) |
Question: | What does mediterranean blend mean? Other oil brands try to slip in Canola oil under this marketing term |
