12 best jarred oysters

Jarred oysters are a type of seafood product that consists of shucked oysters packed in a jar or can with a liquid or brine. Here's what you should know about them:

  1. Preparation and Packaging: Jarred oysters are typically prepared by shucking fresh oysters and placing them in jars or cans. They are often packed in their own juices, water, or a brine solution to help preserve their freshness.

  2. Varieties: There are different varieties of jarred oysters available, including smoked oysters and plain, unseasoned oysters. Smoked oysters have a distinct smoky flavor due to the smoking process, while plain jarred oysters can be used in various dishes and recipes.

  3. Uses:

    • Appetizers: Jarred oysters can be served as appetizers, either on their own or with crackers. Their briny and slightly creamy texture can be enjoyed with a squeeze of lemon or hot sauce.
    • Cooking: They can be used in various cooked dishes, such as oyster stews, casseroles, and pasta dishes. Their rich flavor adds depth to these recipes.
    • Sushi and Seafood Dishes: Some sushi rolls and seafood dishes incorporate jarred oysters as an ingredient for added flavor and texture.
  4. Storage: Jarred oysters have a long shelf life and can be stored at room temperature until opened. Once opened, they should be refrigerated and consumed within a few days to maintain freshness.

  5. Nutritional Value: Oysters are a good source of protein, vitamins (such as vitamin B12), and minerals (like zinc and iron). They are also low in calories and fat, making them a relatively healthy seafood option.

  6. Safety: When consuming jarred oysters, it's important to check for any signs of spoilage, such as an off smell or unusual color. Additionally, be aware of any allergies or sensitivities to seafood.

  7. Culinary Creativity: Jarred oysters can be a convenient addition to your pantry for adding a seafood element to various dishes without the need for fresh oysters. They can be used in chowders, dips, and even on pizzas for a unique twist.

When using jarred oysters in recipes, it's essential to follow the specific instructions in your chosen dish to ensure that they are cooked and incorporated properly. Whether you enjoy them straight from the jar or as part of a delicious seafood creation, jarred oysters offer a taste of the sea with added convenience and versatility.

User questions & answers

Question: How many oysters per tin
Answer: Their packed tightly and average 12/13 per tin.
Question: Do these have a disclamer on it saying "Contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause birth defects & etc
Answer: If these are from China chances are they have the disclaimer. I have seen the tins of oysters sold in the $1 Tree stores that contain this disclaimer and they are by Roland. I would not recommend buying these. I buy my oysters from Trader Joes as I know they are from Korea and do not have that disclaimer. I think that the oysters on Amazon are all from China.
Question: Is this a product from China that may contain lead
Answer: It is from China. But don’t know about it containing lead. You would have to send portion of Oysters to Lab for testing to find out. I have eaten several of these. And have had NO Problems.
Question: In which country were these oysters produced
Answer: Most likely China. I just tested Crown Prince Smoked Oysters with my radiation meter since I was concerned about radiation from Fukushima in seafood grown in Western Pacific Waters. Background radiation where I live is 45 CPM (counts per minute). The alarm on my meter goes off at 100 CPM and the Crown Prince Oysters measured 70 CPM. I'd be concerned with any oysters from Korea or China as westrern Pacific waters have been hammered by radiation from Fukushima.

User questions & answers

Question: I take it they haven't updated packaging to BPA free cans, does anyone know
Answer: They would tell you if they had, but there is no listing. However to put this in perspective we all need to be more concerned about Body Mass Index (BMI). Because that is far more likely to indicate lethal disease.
Question: I'd sure like to know how a price of $64.37 could be even remotely justified. How do you
Answer: In my experience, they are the best quality canned oyster on the market...sure it's expensive... so buy them or don't buy them. This is America. That's how it works.
Question: Are these Eastern or Pacific Oysters
Answer: Their Pacific oysters. That said they come from different farms in south Korea and not all the farms have the same freshness of an good oyster. My guess is you got a 50-50 chance of getting some super great tasting oysters. You'll know on your first bite, if there great the batch will be great, if tough and weak flavored the whole batch will be nothing but gut food. That's my opinion.
Question: What happened to the price? It went up almost
Answer: Frank. I called Amazon about the price increase, I was very surprised also. It had been as high as $54 for the case of 18. Seems like it’s down to about $45 now.
