13 best food for bonsai

Food for bonsai trees is crucial to their health and growth. Bonsai are miniature trees that require specific care, including the right nutrients. Here's what you need to know about feeding bonsai trees:

  1. Bonsai Fertilizers:

    • Bonsai trees require specialized fertilizers that provide the necessary nutrients in the right proportions. These fertilizers are typically labeled with an N-P-K ratio, indicating the levels of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K).
    • Balanced fertilizers with equal N-P-K ratios (e.g., 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) are suitable for most bonsai trees.
  2. Seasonal Feeding:

    • Bonsai trees have specific feeding requirements depending on the season. During the growing season (spring and summer), they benefit from more frequent feeding. In contrast, feeding is reduced or even halted during the dormant winter months.
  3. Slow-Release Fertilizers:

    • Slow-release fertilizers are convenient for bonsai enthusiasts because they gradually release nutrients over time, reducing the need for frequent applications.
  4. Liquid vs. Granular Fertilizers:

    • Liquid fertilizers are fast-acting and are absorbed quickly by the bonsai's roots. They are often used during the growing season.
    • Granular or pelletized fertilizers release nutrients slowly and are suitable for long-term feeding. They are often used during the dormant season.
  5. Organic vs. Inorganic Fertilizers:

    • Both organic and inorganic (chemical) fertilizers can be used for bonsai. Organic options include compost, fish emulsion, and bone meal, while inorganic options include synthetic fertilizers.
    • The choice between organic and inorganic fertilizers depends on personal preference and the specific needs of the bonsai.
  6. Frequency of Feeding:

    • Bonsai trees are typically fed every two to four weeks during the growing season. However, the frequency may vary depending on factors like the type of tree, soil, and fertilizer used.
  7. Dilution:

    • When using liquid fertilizers, it's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for dilution. Over-fertilizing can harm the tree's roots.
  8. Micronutrients:

    • Bonsai trees also require micronutrients like iron, manganese, and zinc. Some specialized bonsai fertilizers include these micronutrients, or you can use a separate micronutrient supplement.
  9. Soil Quality:

    • The quality of the soil mix used for bonsai is crucial. It should provide good drainage while retaining some moisture and nutrients. High-quality soil helps bonsai trees absorb the nutrients effectively.
  10. Observation and Adjustments:

    • Bonsai enthusiasts should closely monitor their trees for signs of nutrient deficiency or excess. Adjust the feeding regimen as needed based on the tree's health and growth.
  11. Watering and Fertilizing:

    • It's essential to water the bonsai thoroughly before applying fertilizer to prevent root burn. Fertilizing when the soil is dry can damage the tree's roots.

In summary, feeding bonsai trees requires attention to detail and an understanding of the specific nutritional needs of these miniature trees. Proper feeding, combined with other aspects of care like pruning and repotting, ensures that bonsai trees remain healthy and thrive in their confined environment.

  • Greener foliage and more frequent new growth during the spring and summer growing seasons
  • Strong, more robust root system for soaking up nutrients
  • A overall healthier plant with great adaptability and longevity
  • Higher resistance to general disease
  • Stronger trunk and branches

Promotes Lush Foliage

  • Liquid Bonsai Fertilizer offers a wonderful NPK ratio to promote strong Bonsai roots and to help leaves reach their fullest potential. The most noticeable results will be seen with consistent usage through the growing seasons of spring and summer.

Immediate Uptake

Healthier plants

  • A consistent use of liquid fertilizer will lead to a stronger and healthier bonsai plant over time. The trunk and branches of your bonsai will grow faster and stronger. This liquid plant food is rich in Nitrogen, Phosphate, and Potassium.

Question: Can this be used as a foliar spray

Question: I see no difference between dynagro and bonsai pro other than price. Is there
Answer: None.
Question: can this be used on other house plants
Answer: I've been told by professional gardeners it can. Also, I've used it for about 20 years on most of my plants with apparent success.
Question: I used this before on a different bonsai then it died, can someone help me understand why this happened
Answer: If you use 1 tablespoon per gallon, and water once per week, your bonsai should do very well. Is it getting enough light? Bonsais will not thrive indoors, even near a window. They need to be outside. Check how dry your soil gets every other day to ensure a once per week watering is sufficient.

What is fertilizer and why do plants need it?

Fertilizer, often referred to as plant food, is a broad term for either a mixture of chemicals or naturally occurring matter that is used for enhancing the growth of plants. You can add fertilizers to the soil in liquid, water-soluble and granular form. At The Bonsai Supply, we prefer to add our fertilizers in a granular slow-release form. The slow-release makes sure that your Bonsai has enough time to absorb all the nutrients needed. Liquid fertilizer and water-soluble fertilizer gets washed out by the second or third watering and your Bonsai doesn't have enough time to absorb it, meaning you are fertilizing your surrounding areas more than your actual Bonsai! Plants need fertilizer because they need to grow, in the ground the plant/ tree can spread its roots for miles but inside of a container, the roots are limited and absorb all the nutrients the soil has to offer in the matter of no time.

RELIABLE ALTERNATE SOURCE

Soil can only provide so much. When nutrients run out, it would barely be able to provide what a bonsai needs to grow or, at least, thrive. Our fertilizer pellets are a great source of nutrients and minerals for bonsai especially since it is in a pot with just minimal soil. Our special formula encourages greener and more robust foliage, as well as stronger trunk and branches.

NO MORE COMPLICATED MIXING

Traditional fertilizers often involved careful measuring and mixing, depending on the size and needs of your plant. Our pellets are pre-mixed, relieving you of any time-consuming prep duties. They are also dry and granular so you won’t need to wear that apron to protect yourself from messy drips and spills. Just lift the moss of your bonsai, uniformly apply the fertilizer on the surface of the soil, and cover it back up.

FERTILIZES IN ITS OWN SWEET TIME

Bonsai requires a good amount of TLC if you want it to survive. This does not mean, though, that you have to spend all your time on it. While liquid fertilizers are easily absorbed into the soil, it means you also have to replenish it more often than your schedule permits. Our pellet-form fertilizer is developed with a time-release feature. This means that it just sits on the soil when dry, but will melt and dissolve a certain amount every time it comes in contact with water. This way, you only need to apply it every 5 to 8 months.

SPECIFIC TYPE OF BONSAI

There are 3 classes of bonsai trees and each one has a specific fertilizing schedule:

Deciduous Bonsai Trees –During the growing season, these must be fertilized weekly. When its leaves have fallen, stop feeding.

Conifer – Weekly fertilization during growing season and a few times during Winter.

Tropical and Sub-Tropical –Weekly feeding during growing season, monthly from Fall to Spring..

FERTILIZING REPOTTED PLANTS

Bonsai need to be regularly repotted because, as they grow, their root system also grows. When it can barely fit into its current container, it may not grow well or might stop growing altogether. Moving a bonsai tree to another pot can be a stressful time in its existence so it is recommended to stop putting fertilizer during this time. Continue feeding a month after it has been transferred to a bigger or wider pot.

FEED THE SOIL, NOT THE TREE

It is almost tempting to just sprinkle the fertilizer over a bonsai plant like a farmer would on his rice field. However, it is important to remember that when you apply fertilizer, you are nourishing the soil, not the plant. When the soil is rich with nutrients, it can effectively give what the dwarfed tree needs to grow healthier leaves, trunks and branches. Make sure to apply fertilizer on the soil, not on the plant itself.

User questions & answers

Question: I will rephrase my earlier question... I have 11 plants in 5ā€-6ā€ pots (4 Rex begonias, 4 grapefruit saplings, a croton, + 2 others, + 2 10ā€ + and
Answer: What's the question? No one is going to go looking for your previous post. If you're asking how much fertilizer to use then I'd say for plants in development in that size of a pot I'd do a pile of 3-4 pellets each every 4 weeks.
Question: I was told to water my bonsai from the bottom by placing it it a pan of water. Will these pellets work in that manner
Answer: yes, they release slowly when wet; however I follow old Japanese watering style of three passes with water; 1 pass for the soil, 1 pass for the roots and 1 pass for the pot, allow to drain freely on a tray with pebbles.
Question: How many pellets to use? Is it 1 per inch of pot size or 1 for every square inch
Answer: For a 6" pot, you'd want to use 6 Pellets. That is the manufacture guidelines. At the Nursery, we would generally use 4 pellets in a 6" pot. One at each corner of the pot.
Question: I am in nc and it is our "winter". temps are around 40-50 degrees. bonsai stay outside. should this be used in the winter dormant time? or in summer/s
Answer: My understanding is not to use nitrogen when the plants are dormant in Winter. It can burn the roots. If the trees are dormant they won't need food anyway. So I don't feed my plants that are dormant during winter. Come the spring when plants start waking up and budding again it's okay to feed them. They will need the nitrogen then. So just feed them during the normal feeding seasons from spring to fall. Hope this helps.
