8 best quality matcha tea powder

Quality matcha tea powder is a type of green tea powder known for its vibrant green color, unique flavor, and numerous health benefits. It is made from specially grown and processed green tea leaves, and it has gained popularity in recent years due to its versatility and potential health-promoting properties. Here's what you should know about quality matcha tea powder:

  1. Origin: The highest-quality matcha tea powder traditionally comes from Japan, where it has been cultivated for centuries. Japanese matcha is known for its vibrant green color and smooth, umami-rich flavor. However, matcha-style teas are now produced in other regions as well.

  2. Growth and Harvest: Matcha tea plants are shade-grown for several weeks before harvest. This process, called "shading," helps increase chlorophyll production, giving matcha its characteristic green color and enhancing its flavor.

  3. Processing: After harvesting, the leaves are steamed, dried, and ground into a fine powder.Unlike regular green tea, where leaves are steeped and discarded, matcha tea is consumed in its powdered form.

  4. Grades: Matcha is categorized into different grades based on factors like color, flavor, and texture. The highest-quality matcha is referred to as "ceremonial grade" and is used in traditional tea ceremonies. "Culinary grade" matcha, while still high quality, is often used in cooking and baking.

  5. Flavor Profile: Quality matcha has a complex flavor profile that includes vegetal, grassy notes, and a pleasant umami taste. Lower-quality matcha can taste bitter or astringent.

  6. Color: The color of matcha can range from bright green to a deep emerald green. The more vibrant the green color, the higher the quality is generally considered to be.

  7. Health Benefits: Matcha is rich in antioxidants, particularly catechins like epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). These antioxidants may help protect against oxidative stress and support overall health. Matcha also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that may promote relaxation and alertness.

  8. Caffeine Content: Matcha contains caffeine, but it is typically lower in caffeine than coffee. The caffeine is balanced by the presence of L-theanine, which can provide a calming effect without the jitters associated with some caffeinated beverages.

  9. Preparation: Traditional preparation involves whisking matcha powder with hot water until frothy. Matcha can also be used in various recipes, including lattes, smoothies, desserts, and even savory dishes.

  10. Storage: To maintain the freshness of matcha, it should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Refrigeration can help extend its shelf life.

  11. Certifications: Look for matcha that is certified organic or has undergone quality testing to ensure purity and safety.

In summary, quality matcha tea powder is a versatile and nutritious beverage with a rich cultural history. It is valued for its vibrant color, complex flavor, and potential health benefits. When choosing matcha, consider factors like grade, flavor, color, and origin to ensure you're getting the quality and taste you desire.

Why choose Midori Spring?

It all starts at the beginning...

We pride ourselves on our ability to work with Japanese farmers and producers to hand-pick the finest and darkest tea leaves for our Ceremonial Matcha.

Quality comes from growing techniques

We know the key to great Organic Matcha comes from the farmer and the leaves.

Our partnered farmers specialize in creating the best shade growing conditions for optimal development of young tea leaves. By shading, the tea leaves naturally expand to collect more sunlight. This allows the tea leaves to become very soft and produce more chlorophyll giving it that vibrant green. The amino acids are maintained in the leaves during this process giving them a sweet taste and aroma. We strive to produce high L-theanine content in our leaves. Thereby creating some of the finest quality stone-ground Organic Matcha available.

Rare Mikage Stone Mill

Our carefully selected premium darkest tencha is only grinded by a Mikage Stone Mill. The pattern on the Mikage Stone Mill is hand made and developed based on 1200 years of Matcha history. Only premium ceremonial grades are processed with the Mikage Stone Mill. The type of stone, pattern, weight, and number of spins all play an important role in the quality of the Matcha. One Mikage Stone Mill can only produce 30 to 40 grams of Matcha per hour.

The organic Matcha tea

Our Matcha is proudly sampled by a 9th degree tea master known as a Cha Shi 茶師. Our Cha Shi is trained to quickly identify the type of tea only by tasting and smelling. Resulting in a lasting and flavorful organic cup of Matcha tea.

Quality Excellence

Experience first-rate, authentic Japanese Matcha. Our Matcha farms are second to none, and produces the finest and most flavorful Matcha powders in the world. Using a combination of traditional and modern shade grown techniques, we are able to produce some of the richest and darkest tea leaves for our Matcha

USDA Organic, Kosher and Vegan

We are proud to be one of the few producers to be Organic, Kosher (OU) , Vegan (Vegan Action), GMO and Gluten Free. Our ceremonial and culinary grade Matcha are made from 100% authentic Japanese tencha.

(USDA Organic by NOP via U.S. and Japan organic equivalency agreement, EU Organic via EU and Japan organic equivalency agreement, JAS Organic by OCIA. 2020)

Antioxidant and Nutrient Rich

Our shade grown matcha leaves shows increased levels of L-theanine and antioxidants. Because of the way the leaves are grown, Matcha also has high levels of chlorophyll, which can act as a detoxifying agent. Matcha has the highest rated ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) compared to many fruits and vegetables.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there traces of lead in the matcha powder? I know most matchas do
Answer: We test every harvest for contaminants including heavy metals, pesticides, mold, microbe, and radiation. In the case of lead, we ensure it is not detected above an extremely strict threshold of 0.5ppm. Please let us know if we can help with anything else! Emma Lee Customer Happiness Jade Leaf Matcha
Question: What’s the difference between premium culinary and classic culinary
Answer: I am willing to pay the price difference for my daily green tea latte because I believe the taste of premium is superior to classic culinary for a beverage. I do not add sweetener to my favorite drink as I love the natural flavor. Some say classic culinary can be bitter which isn’t as noticeable in a recipe. I was just in Japan and did not even see “organic” matcha powder available for sale. I am a faithful client of Jade Leaf both for their quality product and outstanding customer service.
Question: Are there differences in the antioxidant content between the ceremonial and culinary grades of matcha
Answer: A very minor difference. The culinary grades have a slightly higher level of antioxidant catechins (which is actually what gives them their more astringent flavor). If these are what you're looking for, than culinary is a great and cost effective way to go! The ceremonial grades have a good bit higher level of caffeine and l-theanine content (bigger energy and focus boost)...which also leads to their more sweet / umami flavor profile. This Premium Culinary Grade is actually a great "best of both worlds". Great question - happy to answer any others! Emma Lee Customer Happiness Jade Leaf Matcha
Question: What's the difference between the barista edition as well as premium and classic culinary matcha's
Answer: We're actually updating our grade names across the board. We’ll be “officially” announcing the new barista edition next week! Simply put, the barista edition is the new name for what we previously called Premium Culinary. That said, it's actually slightly improved in quality, and now comes in a tin format. We’ve also updated our “Classic Culinary” to simply be called “Culinary” going forward. Here’s the breakdown of our 4 grades: Ceremonial: Premium first harvest tea leaves are picked and carefully crafted into our Ceremonial Grade matcha, giving it an exceptionally smooth flavor profile best appreciated when sipping as traditionally prepared tea. Barista: Flavorful first harvest tea leaves were chosen for our Barista Edition matcha and crafted specifically for exceptional lattes and gourmet recipes. This grade is preferred by baristas and expert chefs alike. Culinary: Ground from second harvest tea leaves, our Culinary Grade matcha is a versatile ingredient for blended preparations like lattes, smoothies, and baked goods - providing beautiful color and rich, distinctive flavor. Commercial: Ground from late harvest tea leaves, our Commercial Grade matcha has a more pronounced green tea bitter note. It’s best used as a healthy boost in smoothies, baked goods, supplements, and other prepared foods. Let me know if I can help clarify any further! Marc Marc St Raymond Jade Leaf Matcha

Pantenger Japanese Matcha Green Tea Powder. USDA Organic. First Harvest. High levels of Antioxidants and Amino Acids. (Matcha Green Tea, 3 Ounce)

Leopard LLC

Based on 368 reviews Check latest price
  • Pantenger Fine Culinary Grade is a genuine high quality matcha. It is organically grown in Kagoshima Prefecture by a ninth-generation family-owned tea estate that has accumulated over 250 years of artisan expertise. Use it to make a healthy breakfast, smoothies and lattes but can also be served in the traditional way with hot water.
  • METHOD: The tea leaves are grown under shade for three weeks before the first flush of spring, leaves are hand picked, then powdered using traditional granite stone mills. The “First Flush of Spring” is the first harvest of the year, and the leaves contain three times more L-theanine than the second or summer harvest. Pantenger Matcha contains high levels of antioxidants and amino acids.
  • COLOR: the 20 days of shade force the plant to overproduce chlorophyll, which is what makes the tea a vibrant emerald green. Low quality matcha is pale and yellowish. TEXTURE: Pantenger Matcha is milled using granite stone mills. The result is a silky texture.
  • TASTE: the L-theanine produced by an excess of chlorophyll gives Pantenger Matcha a sweet taste and aroma of fresh grass. Low quality matcha tends to be bitter and astringent.
  • PACKAGING: Pantenger Matcha green tea powder is supplied in airtight tins to protect the tea from oxidation. We hope the natural harmony of our tins and the purity of our matcha will invite you to take a moment of your day to hold your own tea ceremony and enjoy quality time.

User questions & answers

Question: Where in Japan is this tea grown
Answer: I have the pineapple coconut water tea. It has a mild flavor, so I have started adding a little pineapple of my own, or a sprig of mint. But it's refreshing and unsweetened! Hope this helps.
Question: How much caffeine per serving
Answer: I never had argo tea so can't compare. It does taste like a sangria, hot or cold...my favorite.
Question: Is the tea rested for heavy metals?Ids there any testing for environmental toxins done
Answer: Thank you for your interest in Luzianne Tea. Our Luzianne Decaffeinated Black Tea is “Naturally Decaffeinated”. The process involves both water and a naturally occurring compound, Ethyl Acetate. Ethyl Acetate is used to selectively remove the caffeine without removing the flavor compounds. Ethyl Acetate is a naturally occurring compound of both natural foods (apples, bananas, peaches and different vegetables) and in processed foods (wine and fruit liqueurs) and, is Naturally in tea. This is why it is referred to as the “Natural Process” when comparing decaffeination methods. There is approximately 5.3 mg of caffeine per 8 ounces of brewed tea. We hope you will try and enjoy our excellent line of Luzianne Tea!!
Question: is ceremonial stronger than culinary? whats difference between two grades? thanks
Answer: I purchased this product in March 2020 from Amazon for less than $17... and now it's double? Shame!!!

Matcha Green Tea Powder

There are five key ways to determine the highest quality of matcha:

Origin: Japan.

Method: tea leaves grown under shade for three weeks before the first flush of spring, leaves are hand picked, veins are removed, then powdered using traditional granite stone mills.

Color: the 20 days of shade force the plant to overproduce chlorophyll, which is what makes the tea a vibrant emerald green. Low quality matcha is pale and yellowish.

Texture: matcha is milled using granite stone mills. The result is a silky texture, with an average particle size of 10 microns (0.01 mm).

Taste: the L-theanine produced by an excess of chlorophyll gives the matcha a sweet taste and aroma of fresh grass. Low quality matcha tends to be bitter and astringent.

What is the difference between Ceremonial Grade and Fine Culinary Grade?

The tea variety or cultivar.

Our Fine Culinary Grade is 100% Saemidori, which means “clear green,” has a brilliant green liquor. Taste is very good due to its low bitterness and lack of astringency. The amino acid content is the highest of all Japanese cultivars.

Our Ceremonial Grade is a more complex matcha and contains tea leaves from four different cultivars: Asatsuyu, intense green color and reduced bitterness, Saemidori, Okumidori and Ya-bukita both have an elegant aroma and a strong umami taste.

How is matcha different from regular green tea?

1 cup of Matcha is equivalent to 10 cups of high quality green tea in terms of health benefits. This is because you are imbibing the actual tea leaves instead of just a green tea infusion, as well as the the high levels of L-theanine produced by the tea when shaded for twenty days.

Organic Matcha

A great cup of tea requires three elements: great tea, water and a tea master (you). Use the correct dose: 1/3 of a teaspoon is enough to start with. A larger quantity will make your matcha bitter. A well prepared cup of matcha is creamy and sweet. Water: add a little bit of water and whisk until any lumps dissolve (matcha particles are extremely small). Add more water up to 3 FL OZ and keep whisking making W’s, not circles, until it is frothy.

Using the right water temperature (160ºF to 170ºF) will extract the matcha sweet soluble components such as L-theanine. Using a higher temperature will bring a high amount of the bitter and astringent components to your cup such as caffeine and catechins.

The traditional Japanese Matcha bowl, whisk and spoon are desirable but not mandatory to start. If you enjoy Matcha you can then obtain them.

Matcha Green Tea Powder

Source of antioxidants: When growing the leaves that are destined to be ground into matcha, the tea plantation is kept in shade for two to three weeks before the first flush of spring. This absence of light multiplies the amount of antioxidants and polyphenols in the tea leaves. Compared to green tea, matcha contains much more EGCG, a natural antioxidant that combats free radicals which are the main cause of skin aging and inflammation associated with oxidative stress.

Promotes mental alertness and calm: used for more than seven hundred years by the Japanese to hone their focus and stay awake during meditation, matcha contains L-theanine, an amino acid also found in green tea. L-theanine works in two ways, by helping to combat tension and stress and by increasing concentration and focus.

Stronger immune system: the combination of vitamins, polyphenols, EGCG, antioxidants, and L-theanine gives a natural boost to the immune system, helping protect the body from bacteria and viruses.

Weight loss: drinking matcha is a great way of keeping in shape. The combination of antioxidants and L-theanine boosts the metabolism and helps to convert fat cells into energy. Matcha can also help in reduce appetite and increase fat burning during exercise.

Question: how long the 1 oz bag last ? i take at least 3 cups of tea a day
Answer: Hi Esther,Thanks for your question. It depends on how strong you like to have your matcha, but typically using about 1/2 a teaspoon the 1oz bag could make 15-30 servings. If you are looking for something that will last longer, our 3.5oz (100g) bag is more cost effective and can make 50-100 servings. We all love to make our matcha differently, so these numbers are a rough guide. Hope that helps Esther.Hope you enjoy your matcha,Ryo Katayama Pranatio Director - eco heed

Pure, Authentic Premium Japanese Matcha Green Tea

Not All Matcha Is Created Equal

Our premium matcha tea is authentic stone-ground “Tencha” leaves which is a true matcha. Tencha is shaded from sunlight 3-4 weeks before harvest which produces the bright green color of matcha that is filled with “umami” flavor from the rich amino acids contained in the green tea leaves. Many “matcha” found on the market is actually ground “Sencha” & not a true matcha powder. Sencha is not shaded & is made from ground stems & buds which leaves it dull in color & bitter in taste.
