13 best organic matcha powders
Organic matcha powder is a type of powdered green tea that is made from finely ground green tea leaves. It is known for its vibrant green color and unique flavor profile. Here's what you need to know about organic matcha powder:
Production: Matcha is made from shade-grown tea leaves, typically from the Camellia sinensis plant. The leaves are carefully selected, shaded from direct sunlight for several weeks before harvest, and then ground into a fine powder.
Organic Certification: Organic matcha powder is produced from tea plants that are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. To ensure its organic status, it is certified by an accredited organic certification body.
Caffeine Content: Matcha contains caffeine, but it's generally lower in caffeine compared to traditional brewed green tea. The caffeine in matcha is balanced by the presence of L-theanine, an amino acid that provides a calming effect, resulting in a more sustained, focused energy boost.
Flavor Profile: Organic matcha has a distinctive flavor profile that combines natural sweetness with a mild bitterness. It can have grassy, earthy, and slightly umami notes. The taste can vary depending on the quality and origin of the matcha.
Nutritional Benefits: Matcha is known for its potential health benefits. It is rich in antioxidants, particularly catechins, which are believed to have various health-promoting properties, including supporting heart health and reducing oxidative stress.
Preparation: Matcha is traditionally prepared by whisking a small amount of the powder with hot water using a bamboo whisk (chasen). The resulting frothy green tea is often served in small bowls. It can also be used as an ingredient in various recipes, such as lattes, smoothies, and desserts.
Grades: Matcha comes in different grades, with ceremonial-grade matcha being the highest quality and culinary-grade matcha being suitable for cooking and blending. Ceremonial-grade matcha is usually the most vibrant green and has a milder, sweeter flavor.
Storage: To maintain the freshness and vibrant color of organic matcha powder, it should be stored in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture. Proper storage is essential to prevent oxidation.
Availability: Organic matcha powder is widely available in health food stores, specialty tea shops, and online retailers. When purchasing, look for reputable brands and check for organic certification.
Usage: Besides traditional tea preparation, organic matcha can be used in a variety of recipes, including matcha lattes, matcha-flavored ice cream, baked goods, and even savory dishes like matcha-infused pasta.
Organic matcha powder is appreciated not only for its unique flavor and versatility but also for its potential health benefits. It has gained popularity as a natural source of energy and a soothing beverage that can be enjoyed in various forms.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have caffeine in it? Thanks |
Answer: | Yes it does! Each half-teaspoon (1 gram) serving of Matcha contains roughly 25-35mg of caffeine, which is approximately one-third the caffeine of a cup of brewed coffee. Matcha is easily tolerated by many people for whom coffee makes them jittery because all of the other components that make up Matcha in effect slow down the release of caffeine into the body. It typically takes a good three to six hours for this minimal amount of caffeine to be absorbed into the bloodstream, and yet the mindfulness effects are apparent almost immediately upon drinking it.In other words, Matcha doesn't make you feel jittery or wired like coffee can tend to -- it can actually help you relax.Great question Yani - thanks so much for writing in! Question: | Is it sweetened |
Answer: | No, there is absolutely nothing added...each bag contains 100% USDA Organic, all natural, stone ground matcha green tea powder :) You can certainly sweeten it up though with the sweetener of your choice! Many of our customers prefer it that way in their lattes and smoothies.Great question Larissa - thanks so much for writing in! Question: | What is the difference from cafe grade and ceremonial grade matcha |
Answer: | Cafe grade is the worst kind. It is poor in color, taste, and nutrients. It is not meant for drinking, cooking only. -Mei Leaf Expert You Tube Channel |
Question: | Has it been tested for radiation |
Answer: | Absolutely -- our partner farm conducts regular lab tests on the soil, water, and plants to ensure our Matcha is 100% safe to consume, in addition to lab tests performed on the final product that we import (ensuring that not only is there no radiation concern, but also that no heavy metals or other contaminants are present). Product safety is the most important issue for Jade Leaf Organics, and we take every precaution to ensure it. The Uji, Kyoto region where our Matcha is sourced is very far south of the site of the Fukushima incident in 2011, one of the furthest growing regions from the location of the incident, and detailed soil and plant analyses conducted even the year of the disaster showed no signs of radiation contamination. To be clear, our growing region was NEVER affected by the incident. Now, 4 years later, Japan has since lifted all restrictions on crops (even ones grown near Fukushima). Please let us know if there is any other information we can provide...we're here to help.Emma LeeJade Leaf Organics |

By Hiroshi Family Farms
Our family farms have been growing the highest quality, premium Matcha Tea since the 13th Century. Most people don’t know this, but it’s true. Matcha Green Tea originated in the high mountains of China and not Japan. Japanese Matcha Tea is a relatively new phenomena.
Certified Organic Matcha.
Hunan district is the birthplace of tea in China. Jishin Shounin, high priest of Kaijuusen Temple, introduced tea tree seeds from China to Wazuka, Uji District in the 13th century. The tea cultivated here was the first official tea of the Imperial Palace.
It was here that MatchaDNA personally selected Hiroshi, a local family tea farmer to provide exclusive organic Matcha green tea from his Estate to MatchaDNA.This tea is carefully harvested for MatchaDNA exclusively by Hiroshi, his brother and wife. Our family farm is at a high altitude, away from chemical usage on lower grown tea gardens.
MatchaDNA Matcha tea is Culinary Grade – the very highest quality of culinary grade Matcha green tea in China or Japan.
Hiroshi has a reputation of being a maverick tea cultivator using secret family organic compost comprised of local herring and tea tree trimmings to produce the finest tasting green tea without any chemicals. Fewer than 10% of China’s tea gardens are certified organic. All of this exclusive organic Matcha is harvested for MatchaDNA.
Highest Potency, Over 10x Antioxidants Of Brewed Green Tea
This tea is grown under the shade of blanket canopies forcing the tender leaves to produce a deep, dark color fortified with flavor and nutrients.
Only the new leaves are picked from the top of the bush, and must be harvested within 45 minutes before the sun can lighten the color of the leaves.
MatchaDNA Matcha is a prized, naturally dark green color. Drinking fresh Matcha is like taking a multivitamin super-food filled with antioxidants, B-complex, Vitamins C, B1, B2 E, beta carotene, iron, calcium and amino acids to support a healthy body.
- Now you can experience richer flavors. Yum! Add it to lattes, baked goods, smoothies and more. The 4 ounce bag of high quality matcha green tea powder is 100% certified organic!
- The bright green, all-natural, unsweetened and culinary-grade Japanese matcha powder not only has a distinct taste but unthinkable health benefits for the body and mind!
- Boosts energy as well as focus. Increases your vitality with a slow release of rare nutrients. Our Matcha powders will have you walking away with steady energy without the caffeine crash.
- Supports detox. Enhances the rapidness of healthy calorie burn. Helps sustain a virile metabolism while supporting your weight loss goals.

ABOUT MATCHA
WHAT IS MATCHA
Matcha is an ancient form of green tea unique to Japan and China. Instead of throwing out the leaves once the tea is brewed, Matcha is made from the whole green tea leaf, which is specially grown and ground into a finely-powdered form.
MATCHA ORIGIN
Matcha tea has a long history that dates back as far as the 11th century in Japan. It is thought that a Zen Monk by the name of Eisai brought green tea seeds from China and began planting the tea in monasteries. Believing the tea leaves had the ability to promote longevity and to cure certain ailments, Eisai would crush the leaves into a rough powder and drink them blended in water. This first form of matcha tea was considered a precious medicine and was only consumed by a select few. This matcha comes from China.
CAFFEINE CONTENT
Unlike other teas, which use tea bags or tea leaves that are removed from the hot water after steeping, matcha preparation involves consuming the ground tea leaves themselves. Because you are ingesting the entire green tea leaf, the caffeine content is much greater than green tea that is steeped.
On average, Matcha contains less than half the amount of caffeine per cup than in a similar-sized cup of coffee.
NATURAL BITTER TASTE
Not all people fell in love with matcha taste from the first sight. It’s the same experience as with coffee and tea- you begin to love it after few cups! Most people after drinking it for a few days start to crave the nutritious flavor of matcha. There are many variations of matcha. Each person needs to find his matcha match that meets his expectations.
Making latte, frappe, adding it to your favorite smoothie or baking goods is an excellent way to become accustomed to a new taste.

User questions & answers
Question: | Why does this not have the organic seal |
Answer: | Yes. I don't see why not. It isn't sweet tho... a bland kind of taste...... |
Question: | Which part of Japan is this from |
Answer: | I don't know where the coconuts are from. Go to naked juice.com or call (877)858-4237. This is the only coconut water I've tasted that actually taste like coconut. |
Question: | is it made in japan |
Answer: | I think most, if not all, of the sugar is from the 2 3/4 coconuts used in one 16.9 oz of Naked. Note: the label says no "added sugar", where fruits in general have naturally occurring sugar.. Mind you, not all coconuts taste the same...coconuts from Africa vs Asia vs Central America may not be as identical in taste. But, I wouldn't expect a vast difference either. And, coconuts are certainly not all identical in size, therefore nutritional content. Moreover, WebMD says there are about 1.3 grams of naturally occurring sugar per 1 oz of coconut water. So if I am thinking about this correctly, you end up with about 21 grams of natural sugar in one 16.9 oz of Naked. The math adds up to a bit more than the content but, again, coconut size, maturity, and region can make a difference in the natural sugar content (grams per ounce) in one coconut. Feel free to correct my nutrition math if it's wrong. |
Question: | How much caffeine is in half a teaspoon of this powder |
Answer: | Tastes like corn water |

User questions & answers
Question: | How much caffeine per serving |
Answer: | The label says," Calcium from Calcium Carbonate and Citrate" |
Question: | Is it radiation free |
Answer: | D3 is 10mcg (400 IU), Calcium is 1,000mg, Magnesium 500mg, Zinc is 10mg. |
Question: | How many servings is in this bag |
Answer: | This pill is definitely not chewable. It is best taken with a fluid. Keep in mind that the most absorbable, and thus efficient, form of magnesium is magnesium citrate. Many producers of magnesium offer magnesium oxide, which is cheaper to produce but an inferior product. I have never found a chewable form of magnesium citrate, but I would never think of taking an oxide form that is chewable. It simply won't be as well absorbed. |
Question: | Where exactly is the matcha grown - i.e. region and producer |
Answer: | Hi there, I'm not certain if this stuff is considered "quick dissolve" as there is no information contained with it that suggests that is the case. I chose this because it was recommended to me by a friend whose wife is a pharmacist of 40 or so years. Sorry I can't be more helpful! Michael |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the difference in the flavors that you cary |
Answer: | The answer is no. This product is 100% organic Matcha green tea powder, it has no fillers or additives. Please let us know if you have any more questions! |
Question: | How many drinks can be made from 1 oz |
Answer: | Yes, and this is an extremely important matter to us. We obtain third party certified analysis reports regularly to prove undetectable levels of contamination. Please note that once radiation is detected in a particular region, it becomes public information. Also, Japan's ministry of health website posts weekly updates with testing results for levels of radioactive contaminants in tea and other produce (http://www.mhlw.go.jp/english/topics/2011eq/index_food_radioactive.html) Radioactive active contamination of green tea was detected in a number of occasions. In 2011, dried leaves from the year’s first harvest in the Honyama area of Shizuoka were found to contain radioactive cesium above the maximum permitted level. In 2015 traces of radioactive cesium (described as below legal maximum level) were detected in green tea shipped from Japan to Hong Kong, and that tea was imported from prefecture of Chiba. At Macha Konomi, we don't only avoid regions with no history of radiation contamination, but we also make sure we are working with farms as far as possible from Fukushima or the regions I mentioned above. That is the reason we ONLY source from Yame and Uji cities. Akira Matcha (the product you are asking about) is from Uji, Kyoto. Please let us know if you have any more questions! |
Question: | Does it contain any fillers |
Answer: | It's tested and proof is on their website. It's Radiation Free |
Question: | Is this matcha radiation tested |
Answer: | It's grown and packaged in Uji, Kyoto, Japan. It's the Matcha Capital of the world. |
Product features
Shade grown for 3 weeks
Shading prior to harvest will block more than 80-90% of sun light. This traditional step is believed to increase the chlorophyll and L-theanine content.
Carefully selected leaves
This matcha is made exclusively from first harvest leaves. We only use the most delicate and youngest tea leaves from the top of the tea plant. We never use second harvest or older leaves.
Slowly stone ground
After removing the stems and veins, tencha will be carefully ground to Matcha by stone mills (Please watch the video). The grinding process is slow enough not to create too much heat that would affect the quality of the powder and damage the flavor.
Fresh Matcha year-round
Our semi-processed leaves are stored in temperature controlled units. Those leaves will be processed and ground to Matcha in small batches as needed, then shipped to the United States every 2-3 weeks by express air freight. This process allows us to provide freshly ground Matcha through out the year.
Frequently Asked Question
- What makes Akira Matcha different than other types of ceremonial matcha? - Unlike other ceremonial matcha powders, there is no need to sift Akira Matcha before whisking, and it can be easily whisked with low likelihood of clumping. - We are fully transparent in how our Matcha is made and processed, please watch the video to learn our process from shading to stone grinding. - Customer safety is our first priority, and we have attached the results of radiation and lead testing in the images section.
- I mainly drink Matcha as a tea, what grade of Matcha should I be using? If you are seeking a "tea-ceremony" flavor and quality, be careful to avoid culinary grade matcha powder. The difference between low quality and high quality Matcha in color, aroma, and taste is drastic.
- I mainly drink Matcha as a latte, should I be choosing "ceremonial" or "culinary" grade? We highly recommend using Ceremonial grade when making a latte for two reasons: First, the milk (dairy or non-dairy) and the sweetener added to a ceremonial matcha will be complementing its flavor, while in case of culinary Matcha they will be used mainly to hide the astringent and grass-like flavor. Second, with ceremonial matcha you will need significantly less milk and less (or no) sweetener to create a delicious beverage, which will translate into lower overall calorie content, and this is of particular importance to those consuming Matcha as part of a healthy lifestyle dedicated to weight loss and an overall well-being.
- Has this Matcha been tested for radiation and lead? Yes, we test for contamination. Radioactive cesium (Cs-134 and Cs-137) is not detected in our Matcha, and lead level is < 0.5 PPM
- How is Matcha caffeine different than that in coffee? Caffeine in Matcha tea, while significantly less than what's in a cup of coffee, will provide energy that is known to last at least 2 hours and as long as 4-6 hours. Compared to coffee, the caffeine in Matcha tea powder is believed to be absorbed slowly which reduces the likelihood of caffeine spike, jitters or crash. Matcha is rich in L-Theanine, which is believed to act as a natural relaxant, that together with caffeine, may produce a "calming focus".
- What is the shelf life of Matcha? Matcha should be consumed within 12-14 months from grinding, assuming it was properly stored in a cool and dark environment away from heat, light, and humidity. Once package is opened, it should be consumed within 1-2 months and continued to be stored properly (preferably by refrigeration).
- What is the company's policy when setting the expiration date? We set the expiration date approximately 12 months from time of grinding. While Matcha does not "go bad" after 12 months, the quality and flavor are expected to change even with proper storage.
We offer a variety of first harvest Japanese matcha powders in different sizes; choose the matcha that is right for you!
If you are interested in drinking matcha as a tea (with water only) or in an unsweetened/lightly sweetened latte, we recommend using ceremonial matcha like our Akira Matcha or Amaya Matcha. If you are interested in drinking matcha in a strongly sweetened latte or in smoothies, or if you are using it for baking, we recommend using Oishi Matcha.

User questions & answers
Question: | How much caffeine per serving |
Answer: | Yes, it says country of origin: China. |
Question: | how long the 1 oz bag last ? i take at least 3 cups of tea a day |
Answer: | There is no specific info about "ecgc levels" on the package. |
Question: | I am looking to buy this product. However i do not know how to prepare for consumtion. Pointers |
Answer: | Hello 👋🏽 I would assume it is naturally caffeinated as it is pure tea but by no means can one compare it to the caffeine of coffee. There are no jitters or high strungness. It gives you constant energy with no side effects. I love it and this company. 😃✌🏽 |
Question: | Hi has your product been checked for radiation levels |
Answer: | To answer your question with the options given: bitter. Matcha in general is "earthy". I love matcha and green tea. I purchase this economical culinary grade bulk matcha to add to my daily shake. If you have green tea ice cream, this grade of matcha is used to flavor the ice cream. I wouldn't recommend drinking this straight but with your favorite sweetener and milk, i'm sure it'd make a tasty latte. Make sure you like matcha/green tea flavor before buying a lot and/or a high grade. Matcha by itself is not sweet though higher grades are generally smoother and subtler. Enjoy. |

Pure, Authentic Premium Japanese Matcha Green Tea
Not All Matcha Is Created Equal
Our premium matcha tea is authentic stone-ground “Tencha” leaves which is a true matcha. Tencha is shaded from sunlight 3-4 weeks before harvest which produces the bright green color of matcha that is filled with “umami” flavor from the rich amino acids contained in the green tea leaves. Many “matcha” found on the market is actually ground “Sencha” & not a true matcha powder. Sencha is not shaded & is made from ground stems & buds which leaves it dull in color & bitter in taste.

Question: | Does this Matcha have sugar added |
Answer: | Hi Esther,Thanks for your question. It depends on how strong you like to have your matcha, but typically using about 1/2 a teaspoon the 1oz bag could make 15-30 servings. If you are looking for something that will last longer, our 3.5oz (100g) bag is more cost effective and can make 50-100 servings. We all love to make our matcha differently, so these numbers are a rough guide. Hope that helps Esther.Hope you enjoy your matcha,Ryo Katayama Pranatio Director - eco heed |

CERTIFIED ORGANIC MATCHA
Hunan district is the birthplace of tea in China. Jishin Shounin, high priest of Kaijuusen Temple, introduced tea tree seeds from China to Wazuka, Uji District in the 13th century. The tea cultivated here was the first official tea of the Imperial Palace.
It was here that MatchaDNA personally selected Hiroshi, a local family tea farmer to provide exclusive organic Matcha green tea from his Estate to MatchaDNA. This tea is carefully harvested for MatchaDNA exclusively by Hiroshi, his brother and wife. Our family farm is at a high altitude, away from chemical usage on lower grown tea gardens.
BY HIROSHI FAMILY FARMS.
Our family farms have been growing the highest quality, premium Matcha Tea since the 13th Century. Most people don’t know this, but it’s true. Matcha Green Tea originated in the high mountains of China and not Japan. Japanese Matcha Tea is a relatively new phenomena.
MATCHA FROM A PURE SOURCE
Our Matcha is tested for maximum purity. Each batch of tea leaves is hand picked and may have some variances so we show ranges.
CLEAN & HONEST INGREDIENTS
All of our small scale sustainable farms are USDA ORGANIC CERTIFIED. We insure that our teas are 100% FREE from any pesticides, herbicides or other harmful substances.
SAFE & PURE ORIGIN
Your safety is our priority. You are drinking the best Matcha tea in the world for better health. The last thing you want is lead or radiation. That is why we make sure our products are regularly tested for both.

Question: | Where is the sourced and where is it processed |
Answer: | Yes, because this has much more ECGC than brewed matcha green tea. You can consider thisas an ECGC powder full of nutrients. |
Question: | If I use this daily, how long will the 30g tin last |
Answer: | No sugar added. |
Question: | Is culniary grade matcha differnt from ceremonial matcha and is it ok to just put in bottle water |
Answer: | A teaspoon of matcha (makes 8 oz) has about 70 mg of caffeine in it. An 8 oz cup of most coffee has a little more than a 100 (a Starbucks Grande-- 16 oz -- has 330mg of caffeine). |
Question: | Is this tea tested for lead and other heavy metals? Have any traces been detected |
Answer: | YES!!! I make a breakfast smoothy with this matcha powder every morning. It wakes me up gently and there is no crash later in the day. Try blending your fruit (fresh or frozen) into your green tea smoothy. Nice wake up treat to yourself. Hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy them. Hope this helps. |

Farm Direct Organic Matcha from Japan
Matcha is produced across Japan, but we've found the very best organic matcha to be ground from tea leaves grown in the Uji and Kagoshima regions. Family-owned partner farms fuse traditional and modern techniques to cultivate leaves brimming with flavor and nutrients.
100% USDA Organic
True, authentic Japanese matcha that is certified organic is still in extremely scarce supply (less than 1% of Japanese tea farms are certified!) — and we have been carefully forming partnerships with the preeminent farms to be able to supply the best quality organic matcha for fair value.
Lab Tested for Integrity
We test our products both at the farms where they are grown, as well as by third party laboratories here in the U.S. Our quality standards were developed through a combination of state and federal guidelines as well as consultation with scientific research and analysis.
Premium Organic Ceremonial Matcha
Premium first harvest tea leaves are picked and carefully crafted into our Teahouse Edition Ceremonial Matcha, giving it a delightful, smooth flavor profile best appreciated when sipping as traditionally prepared tea.
Traditional Hot Matcha Tea
Sift 1/2 to 1 tsp of matcha into your bowl then add 2oz of cool water. Whisk until smooth froth forms. Add hot water (not over 170˚F) to taste (2-6oz).
Coldbrew Iced Matcha Tea
Add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of matcha, 2oz of cold water, and ice to a shaker. Shake vigorously until well mixed and frothy. Pour over 6-14oz of ice water (or juice for a sweet treat!)
Premium Matcha Lattes
Add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of matcha to 2oz of water and whisk or shake to mix. Pour over 6-12oz of your favorite milk (hot or iced) and sweeten if desired.
Our Promise to You
1) To provide premium quality, authentic Japanese organic matcha at a fair value.

User questions & answers
Question: | where are all the mold, radiation, lead, pesticides, etc... test results? and third party testing |
Answer: | Our matcha is both sourced and processed in the Uji region of Japan, near the historic city of Kyoto in the Kyoto prefecture. Great questions -- happy to answer any more! -EmmaEmma LeeCustomer HappinessJade Leaf Organics |
Question: | Please tell me about the container it comes in. Is that ceramic or plastic? Thanks |
Answer: | A standard serving is just 1 gram (1/2 teaspoon) -- so with one serving a day it would last a full 30 days! If you're using a full teaspoon a day (either all at once or split between two servings), the tin would last about 15 days. Great question! Happy to answer any others. -EmmaEmma LeeCustomer HappinessJade Leaf Organics |
Question: | Is that matcha made and grown in Japan or China |
Answer: | Yes - culinary grade matcha comes from a later harvest than ceremonial matcha and has a bit more bitter flavor - which is why most folks prefer to use it blended into things like lattes or smoothies. Some like the stronger taste when brewing culinary matcha as tea, however, so its all up to your preference! You can absolutely put culinary matcha into a bottle of water and enjoy it that way.The Ceremonial Matcha will have a smoother and sweeter taste which is generally preferred when enjoying it as tea.Great question - happy to answer any others! -EmmaEmma LeeCustomer HappinessJade Leaf Organics |
Question: | Is it radiation tested |
Answer: | Absolutely. Each crop is tested for contaminants by the farms, and then we test the imported matcha using two independent laboratories here in the U.S. -- Anresco Laboratories and Certified Laboratories. The most recent reported levels were no lead detected below the detection limit of 1ppm (part per million). We additionally test for the full spectrum of common heavy metals (Arsenic, Cadmium, and Mercury) as well as Fluoride, and similarly these were not detected below the detection limit of 1ppm.We additionally have the labs perform radiation tests and use a gross Alpha/Beta/Gamma test that comprehensively detects radiation contamination (as opposed to testing for just the most common radioactive isotopes, which is all most brands do). All crops have passed these tests with no traces of contamination.Great question -- safety of our products is a top priority of ours. Happy to answer any other questions! -EmmaEmma LeeCustomer HappinessJade Leaf Organics |
