Answer:	The answer to your question, can you transfer VHS tapes to DVD with this device, is NO. You need another device to do that procedure. It is sold on Amazon for appx. $15 dollars and you do need a DVD burner in your computer to do so. Hope this helps.

Since I no longer every record vhs tapes, just play commercial or already-existing ones, I'm not sure whether or not it records; I THINK it does, but can't say definitely. Nor does it play either PAL format dvd's, or Blu-rays, only the NTSC format that includes almost all U.S.-made dvd's.

Answer:	Your question seemed to have been truncated, but I am assuming you are having problems getting it to operate after the power fail? My unit (Aug 2007 vintage) lost all function in various stages and is on the recycle pile for trash. It is/was not very reliable, and first it started eating tapes and would not play or rewind anymore, then it refused to recognize any DVD. Its tape handling was very rough though from the start. I am still using my Sylvania DVD tunerless/linein recorder, and so far so good. Don't know if the DV220SL8 can be repaired or worth trying, I didn't call their 800 number.
