14 best dvd recorders for tv

DVD recorders for TV are electronic devices that allow you to record television programs onto DVDs. These devices were quite popular in the early 2000s and served as an alternative to VCRs (Video Cassette Recorders) for recording and archiving TV shows, movies, and other video content. Here are some key points about DVD recorders for TV:

  1. Recording Capabilities: DVD recorders are equipped with built-in DVD drives that can write data onto recordable DVDs. They can record both analog and digital TV signals, depending on their compatibility.

  2. Analog vs. Digital: Some DVD recorders are designed to work with analog TV signals, while others are equipped to handle digital signals, such as those received via cable, satellite, or over-the-air broadcasts. In regions where digital TV broadcasting is prevalent, DVD recorders with digital tuners are more common.

  3. Recording Formats: DVD recorders typically support multiple recording formats, including DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW. The choice of format affects the compatibility of the recorded discs with other DVD players.

  4. Time-Shifting: DVD recorders often come with time-shifting capabilities, allowing you to pause, rewind, and fast forward live TV broadcasts. This feature is similar to the functionality offered by DVRs (Digital Video Recorders).

  5. Editing Features: Some DVD recorders offer basic video editing functions, such as cutting and arranging recorded content, creating playlists, and adding simple menus to the recorded DVDs.

  6. Quality Settings: Users can usually adjust recording quality settings, which affect the amount of video that can be recorded on a single DVD. Higher quality settings result in better video quality but may limit recording time.

  7. DVD-RAM: Some DVD recorders support the DVD-RAM format, which offers rewritable capabilities and greater flexibility for editing and erasing content on the recorded discs.

  8. Inputs and Outputs: DVD recorders typically have various inputs and outputs, including HDMI, composite, component, and S-video connections, to facilitate the connection with different TV and audio/video equipment.

  9. Copy Protection: DVD recorders often include copy protection features to prevent the unauthorized duplication of copyrighted material. This can limit the ability to record certain programs or DVDs.

  10. Obsolete Technology: It's important to note that DVD recorders have become somewhat obsolete in recent years due to the rise of digital streaming and DVR services. Many people now rely on these services to record and watch TV content.

  11. Compatibility: When using DVD recorders, it's essential to ensure compatibility with the TV signal source (analog or digital) and the type of DVD media used. Additionally, consider the compatibility of the recorded DVDs with other DVD players or computers.

In summary, DVD recorders for TV were once popular devices for recording television programs onto DVDs.They offered various recording formats, editing features, and connectivity options. However, with the advancement of digital technology and the popularity of streaming services, their relevance has diminished.

Panasonic

Based on 107 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Panasonic, DVD Recorder, DV Input, HDMI, SD Card Slot

Record your home movies and your favorite TV programs easily to DVD disc with the Panasonic DMR-ES25S progressive scan recorder/player, which provides ultimate flexibility in recording media options. It also includes an HDMI digital audio/video output, which can "up-convert" standard DVD movie discs to near HD resolution. Where standard DVD players (even progressive scan models) provide just 480 lines of resolution, the DMR-ES25S up-converts the picture up to 720p and 1080i high-def video formats--taking full advantage of your HD television's sparkling resolution. (Note that your TV must have an HDMI connection; HDMI cable not included.)

Choose from a full spectrum of recordable DVD media--write-once DVD+R and DVD-R discs or rewritable DVD-RW/+RW and DVD-RAM discs. (For temporary storage, such as your favorite weekly shows, DVD-RAM discs are a great choice as they can be rewritten more times than DVD-RW/+RW discs.) It's easy to record TV programming with the built-in analog TV tuner with RF pass-through and seven-day TV Guide electronic programming guide. In addition to standard DVD movie and CD audio discs and its compatible recordable formats, the DMR-ES25S can play back CD-R/RW, dual layer DVD-R/+R, and VCD disc formats as well as JPEG, and MP3 digital formats. You can also view individual images and photo slideshows using the integrated Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot (compatible with JPEG and TIFF file formats).

Panasonic's Time Slip function consists of two features designed to give you added flexibility and control when making DVD recordings: Chasing Playback and Simultaneous Record & Play. With Chasing Playback, you don't have to wait for an entire program to be recorded before watching it from beginning to end. This feature allows you to watch a program that's currently being recorded from any point that's already been recorded--while continuing to record the live program in progress. Simultaneous Record & Play allows you to record a program onto a disc while simultaneously watching any other program that's previously been recorded on the same disc.

You can set your recorder to one of five different recording speeds, each varying in recording quality and length. EP mode yields the most recording time, LP & SP modes provide less recording time with higher quality recording, and XP mode gives you the highest quality recording. There's also the FR (Flexible Recording) mode that lets you record with the best picture quality possible for the recording time and remaining space on the disc.

The Direct Navigator feature makes it easy to find a previously recorded program on a disc. A list of recording dates, times, channels and (user-entered) titles are shown on screen. With the Playlist Playback function, you can perform simple non-linear video editing using, such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes, or copying selections

Jump directly to any spot on a disc and begin playback or recording right away with the Rapid Random Access function when using DVD-RAM discs. Even if there is no sequential area of empty space available, this DVD recorder can record data on available space throughout the rest of the disc. You will also avoid searching for a blank spot to start recording, or accidentally recording over desired material.

Enjoy a great picture on you flat screen LCD or plasma HDTV using the component video output, and immersive surround sound via the optical digital audio output for Dolby Digital and DTS home theater effects. It also offers a FireWire port (also known as IEEE1394 or i.Link) for direct connection to a digital video camcorder, enabling you to download footage directly to disc. The full lineup of video and audio connections includes:

  • RF Input: 1
  • Composite video/audio input: 2 (1 front)
  • Composite video/audio output: 1
  • S-Video input: 2 (1 front)
  • S-Video output: 1
  • Component video output: 1

Tech Talk

HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections .

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

High Definition Formats: The most common high-def (HD) video format is 720p, which displays video at 720 vertical by 1280 horizontal pixels. The "p" denotes that it is progressive scan, meaning that all video lines are filled at the same time. The 1080i format displays video at 1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels, and the "i" means that it is interlaced (the old-school way of presenting video where the screen scans the odd-numbered video lines first, then the even-numbered lines). The 1080p format has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, but it is a progressive scan format and thus has a constant vertical resolution of 1080 lines.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the panasonic dmr-es35vs dvd recorder / vcr combo with dv input have the hard disk drive
Answer: There might be some generic scrubby pads sold here on Amazon but the only place I've seen the real/authentic Bissell pads sold not in the mixed sets is on the Bissell website. I know you can buy just the scrubby pads there, individually. However, one pad costs almost as much as buying the set of 2 different pads. I wish they would offer a set that included just the scrubby pads... or a set that included 2 (or 3) the soft pads because for my floors, I prefer the soft pads over the scrubby type.Anyway, here's the link for Powerfresh parts/pads if you are interested:https://www.bissell.com/powerfresh-steam-mop-hard-floor-steam-cleaner-1940/parts?utm_source=legacyredirect&utm_medium=legacyredirect&utm_campaign=%2fpowerfresh-steam-mop-hard-floor-cleaner-1940%2fparts
Question: I bought one of these (Panasonic DMR ES35V) at a garage sale, no manuel included. Where can I go to print off a user manuel
Answer: Whenever it is on, there is hot steam coming through the bottom, so it's probably not a good idea to let it sit in one spot on the floor for too long. I think the maximum time is 30 seconds (it gives the exact time in the instructions). To prevent any floor damage, I would lean it against something at an angle so the pad is not flat on the floor surface. Or unplug it, which turns it off. Good luck!
Question: how do you order the remote # dmr- es35 only
Answer: Yes they wash really well I just put them in the washer with my other cleaning towels I use oxyclean and detergent but no softener. I haven't had it long enough to show any wear. I bought extra pad when I purchased the machine so I always have a clean pad. Jo Ann
Question: Can i record vhs tapes right to a sd card with this model
Answer: Hi - I think the reason the suggest that is they have a very rough surface, good for cleaning but also collects lint from your other clothes. I found that these get very dirty and require an extra amount of hand scrubbing before i put them in the washing machine. I spray them with Resolve, and then scrub them on a washboard or with a dish brush and then wash them seperately. I have washed them with other things, but as i suggest they collect a lot of fibers from other items in the wash. This is a great machine for cleaning floors, even the "smell good" pellets are great. One suggestion, don't buy a lot of backup pellets as the ones that come with the machine will last you many cleanings, if you remove them before washing. This is my 5+ Star cleaning machine, it is even better than when i first reviewed it. I did order additional pads so that i had at least 2 to 3 for the whole house. I have 1400 sq feet of ceramic tile.

Question: my dr430 is no longer functioning properly...so... Will my un-finalized discs play/finalize on this unit
Answer: Yes
Question: I have a remote for the d-r430 , will it work on this unit?. remote: se-r
Answer: Yes.
Question: How do i hook up dv recorder m # d-r400 to 4k fire smart tv brand insignia
Answer: Not all units being sold now come with a remote. They will if it says in the description that a remote is included. You can also get a remote on Amazon as they sell the replacement remote. A new one will have a remote and cables.
Question: can you finalize the dvd if you don't have a remote
Answer: Yes
Question: can i use this with an antenna only
Answer: If by tape you are referring to a VCR tape, then it sounds as if the tape has been wound to tight. This will happen normally over time if the tape is watched a lot. There are several ways to loosen the tape. First try to gently turn one of the windings so the tape is not as tight. If that does not work, and you have another VCR Player try that one. Unfortunately, they do come to a point that they can't be used any more. I have had to trash several like that.
Question: Does this have hdmi input
Answer: It does have an HDMI output. It makes an outstanding DVD player. My only concern is the current price. I bought 3 of them from HSN for $179 each. They were also sold at Walmart for the same price.
Question: does this have a coax input
Answer: Not Here, works great. It will not dub tapes that have Macrovision copy protection, if that's what you mean. Other than that, it works great.
Question: Does this recorder have a built-in tuner
Answer: You will likely need the Roku Express. https://forums.tomsguide.com/threads/attatch-roku-to-dvd-recorder.206250/
Question: what cables will i need to hook up to my direct tv and tv
Answer: The record speeds are: 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours. Of course the faster the speed, the better quality of the recording, just like video tape.
Question: can you record from cable dvr
Answer: I don't see why not, although I've never done it quite that way. We've had our Toshiba D-KR10 model forever... and love it. What we do is Record the Show/Movie from the cable box, (ours is DirectTV), into our DirectTV 'List'. Then, when we're ready, we put a blank DVD into the Player, choose the Speed we want, click on the Show/Movie, and hit Record. I can't tell you how many DVD's I've recorded this way... we've got well over 200 now as we're in our 60's and television doesn't often play the kinds of movies and shows we like. But, whenever they do, I record them onto a DVD for later viewing. I can't tell you how happy I am with this Player/Recorder.
Question: This device can record tv local programs?. I mean I don't have cable company
Answer: very few inputs, 2RCA
Question: does it record cable tv directly to dvd disc
Answer: I got mine several years ago and it did come with a remote. I still use it some and am very satisfied with it.
Question: does it include a remote
Answer: Hey there, The unit was designed for HDMI use....I would recommend a Magnavox MRV 660 for RCA usage
Question: How does this unit connect to the tv
Answer: Unit will record anything that is not protected. It is a great player and recorder.
Question: Will a 90 minute vhsC home movie fit on a standard dvd recordable disc when using thus unit
Answer: YES, IT DOES
Question: I am planning to make multiple copies of vhs family movies to give to my kids. when you record to dvd is there an option to make more dvd's? or 1 at a
Answer: This boa is definitely well worth the money and I'm not positive if it looks real. It doesn't look like Monopoly money that's for sure!

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used to record videos played from a camcorder connected to the tv
Answer: Mine did - looked new too.
Question: is it a multi region DVD player/recorder
Answer: Although this item was purchased by me it was given to someone else, but I do know that connecting it to the TV is very simple and standard for many VCR's of this type. You can probably check out or download the manual online.
Question: does the tuner ntsc capable
Answer: If you own a VHS-C to VHS convertor it would work. These are probably not available new but could be sourced second hand from eBay or even Amazon. The VHS-C converter looks like a regular VHS cassette with a sliding door on top where you fit the little guy VHS-C in. Good luck finding a convertor.
Question: What about widescreen recording and playback? My current unit either stretches the picture or puts the widescreen picture in a box in the middle of my TV screen
Answer: I used this machine to make VHS copies to DVD's. After you are done be sure to "Finalize" your new DVD before removing it. Go to set-up, then DVD menu, then finalize? Then finalize-YES....otherwise you can't play copies in other friends machines...You can probably use your laptop to make copies DVD to DVD. thats what i'll be doing....with this machine you'd have to run the tape again for every copy... that would take a lot longer than your laptop copies

User questions & answers

Question: can you record any program from the tv? Does this have tv turner ? I am not very tech savy
Answer: Hi Ricko,If the Tv has an HDMI input available you go from DVD player hdmi out to the TV using an HDMI cable if not RCA audio & video which are yellow for video Red for right side audio & white for left side audio. Look at the back of your directive box if it has an s video out use that for video to the dvd player & RCA audio cable red/white for sound. If the directive box does not have an S video out then use RCA cable.for audio & video.
Question: Can you record to a DVD
Answer: Yes, that is what I use it for exclusively. First I record a program on my dvr, then I play the DVR'd program while recording on the Toshiba. I have a component cable (3 prongs) that runs from my cable box (video, audio L and audio R out) to my Toshiba (video, audio L and audio R in). Works great. This also allows me to control when I start and stop the recording. Sometimes a movie will not last a full two hours, but will stop 10 minutes before to show "coming attractions," etc.
Question: can you record to a DVD
Answer: If you don't have a cable or satellite receiver and are receiving your tv signals with an antenna, you either have a tv with a digital tuner or a separate digital tuner/ converter box connected to your tv. If you're using a digital converter box from your antenna to the tv, connect the outputs from the digital converter box into the inputs of Toshiba DR430 Recorder and then connect the outputs of the recorder to the TV inputs. You will be connecting from the video (yellow jack), audio (red & white jacks) to the same colored jacks in & out from the Toshiba DVD Recorder to an input on the TV. If you're not using a digital converter box already for your local stations, you will have to buy one to connect to the Toshiba Recorder to record local shows because the recorder does not have a tuner in it. You can buy them for about $30 bucks at Wal-Mart or Radio Shack. I gave you a lot of information but it's easy to setup. They can guide you at Radio Shack. I have one box hooked just this way and it works fine. Hope this was of help.
Question: will it record the Closed Captioning from the over the air TV broadcast
Answer: Some channels are copy-protected and will not record onto dvd....
