Also the motion detection and the grid overlay can also determine if a camera will record. There is a setting for always recording in addition to record on motion detection. |

| Answer: | I set my 8 cam system to record only when motion is detected and I can go back and view clips from a week ago. I imagine with a single terabyte drive you can get between 500-600 hours with the H.264 encoding. So long as its selective recording, such as motion detection, etc. For continuous 24/7 recording that you would probably want to add a 4 terabyte drive to achieve the estimated 600 hours that's advertised. |
