It works as a regular night light normally and if the power goes off it will switch to AA batteries and keep the night lite on. The article says the batteries have a life of about 250 hours. Since it uses regular AA batteries they might need to be replaced probably once every year or so. I can tell you from experience that they are nice to have in case the power goes off at night. The new capabilities conflict and prevent it. So if you already have a Play:1 and wish to have a stereo pair, you'll need to buy two to do so.

My cell phone was at 2% and I charged it up to 70% using this radio and still had 50% left in the radio battery. Then I put the radio in the sun and it recharged nicely. So many products can only charge your cell phone to make one phone call. I needed a reliable way to recharge my cell phone and have a good weather band. The only thing I don't like about this little heavy duty beast is the initial static when you first turn it from fm to am. But that quickly goes completely away and I get crisp clear am too.
