3 best emergency radio for emp
An Emergency Radio for EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) is a specialized device designed to remain functional even in the event of an EMP event. EMPs can be caused by natural phenomena, such as solar flares, or by man-made devices, such as nuclear explosions. These high-intensity bursts of electromagnetic radiation can potentially disrupt or damage electronic devices, including radios and communication systems. Therefore, an EMP-resistant emergency radio is designed to withstand the effects of an EMP and continue functioning.
Key features of an EMP-resistant emergency radio may include:
Faraday Cage: The radio may be housed in a Faraday cage or container. A Faraday cage is an enclosure made of conductive materials that can block electromagnetic radiation. This helps protect the electronic components inside the radio from EMP damage.
Manual Tuning: EMP-resistant radios often feature manual tuning knobs rather than digital controls. This reduces their vulnerability to EMP interference, as digital components are more susceptible to damage.
Mechanical Components: They may have mechanical components for critical functions like tuning and volume control to minimize reliance on electronic components.
Battery and Hand-Crank Power: EMP-resistant radios often have multiple power sources, such as rechargeable batteries, solar panels, and hand-crank generators. This ensures that the radio can operate even if the power grid is disrupted.
Shortwave and AM/FM Bands: These radios often include shortwave and AM/FM bands for access to a wide range of broadcast frequencies, including government emergency channels.
Weather Band: Many emergency radios also have weather band capabilities, allowing users to receive real-time weather alerts and updates.
Built-in Flashlights and SOS Signals: Some models come with built-in flashlights and the ability to send distress signals (e.g., SOS) to attract attention in emergencies.
Durability: EMP-resistant radios are typically built to be rugged and durable, making them suitable for outdoor and emergency situations.
It's important to note that while EMP-resistant radios are designed to withstand EMP events, they may still have limitations, and the effectiveness can vary based on the strength and proximity of the EMP event. These radios are primarily intended for emergency preparedness and may not offer the same features and convenience as regular radios or communication devices.
When considering an EMP-resistant emergency radio, it's crucial to research and choose a reliable and tested model to ensure it will perform as expected in the event of an EMP incident. Additionally, having other forms of communication and backup power sources as part of your emergency preparedness kit is advisable to ensure you can stay connected and informed in various emergency scenarios.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the crank metal or plastic? Also, for those owning this and the older version with the larger solar panel - is the solar charging equally strong |
Answer: | According to reviews, its is rated IPx4 water resistant, IPx4 is water resistance to rain including driving rain from all directions + short-duration (generally means accidental) up to 5 minute full submerging to depth of less than 3 feet. IPv5 and 6 allow prolonged submersion at greater depths (greater depth = more pressure at seals) & withstanding directed pressurized water spray, which this doesn't have but IPx4 is probably the highest water resistance for anything close to this price point |
Question: | Is the unit waterproof |
Answer: | Any charger that has a micro-USB should work. But please note that Eton states in the manual for the FRX5 --NOTE: The USB power source should be able to withstand a minimum constant 500 mA power output for an extended period of time to fully charge the FRX5's 2000mAh battery. There are at least two units that state they are for the FRX5. Try searching for FR-X5 NFRX5SWXBGHope this helps! |
Question: | Can you operate the radio with an external battery pack (the kind that is used to charge cell phones) in the case the internal battery fails |
Answer: | I purchased a 800 mah battery but it was too large for the compartment. Any idea of what is the exact replacement battery that fits into the compartment of the Eton Portable? |
Question: | What kind of battery does it have and is it replaceable |
Answer: | I left it on for almost 24 hours before the volume started to fade. I figured it had a little more juice even after that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | After 6 hours of charging mine the red light won't go out. How do I know it's charged |
Answer: | Please kindly be noted that the charging light staying in red is a symbol to show that the radio is fully charged, which means the charging light will not turn green. However, if the charging light flashes red, then it means that the item is still in charging. Hope this will help. |
Question: | Has anyone actually used this to charge their cell phone? In my experience that supposed feature never works on these things. Any success anyone |
Answer: | I used this feature during Hurricane Irma, but the "charging" was minimal. The radio had a hard time holding power to broadcast while also charging the phone. My suggestion to anyone who is looking for a phone charging option in case of loss of power is to buy a backup power cell with a USB port for your phone to plug into. Much more reliable than trying to use the crank radio. All other features on this radio work well, though. |
Question: | How long it takes to be fully charged via usb |
Answer: | It takes about 4 hour to fully charge the radio via USB. |
Question: | Can you *charge* the radio/flashlight using the usb cable? thanks |
Answer: | Yes, you can charge the radio via the provided USB cable. |
Product features
Compact and Portable
Thanks to the small size, you can pack the radio in your emergency toolbox and it can also be attached without too much effort to a belt with its sturdy clip. Better yet, it also can work as a portable battery to charge your USB devices and a quick emergency call will help you get out.
Notice:
NOAA, AM, or FM receives different channels in different time frames. In addition to the radio's antenna performance, it depends on whether the station broadcasts in the specific time frame and frequency or not. If the station doesn't broadcast, the radio cannot receive the signals.
