12 best vhf handheld radios
VHF (Very High Frequency) handheld radios, also known as VHF two-way radios, are portable communication devices that operate within the VHF radio frequency band. These radios are commonly used for various purposes, including outdoor activities, public safety, marine communication, and more. Here are some key points about VHF handheld radios:
Frequency Range: VHF radios operate in the frequency range of 30 MHz to 300 MHz. They are typically used for communication over relatively short to medium distances, making them suitable for a variety of applications.
Line-of-Sight Communication: VHF signals travel primarily in a straight line and are affected by obstacles like buildings and hills. As a result, their effective range can vary depending on the terrain and environment.
Outdoor and Recreational Use: VHF handheld radios are popular among outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, campers, and hunters. They provide a reliable means of communication when cell phone signals are weak or unavailable in remote areas.
Marine Communication: VHF radios are widely used in the maritime industry. Marine VHF radios are designed specifically for communication on the water and are essential for boaters, sailors, and fishermen. They are used for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication as well as for emergency calls.
Public Safety and Emergency Services: Many public safety agencies, such as police, fire departments, and search and rescue teams, use VHF handheld radios for communication during emergencies and operations.
Features: VHF handheld radios come with various features, including channel scanning, weather alert functions, and the ability to store and recall preset channels. Some models are also submersible, making them suitable for water-related activities.
Battery Power: Battery life is a crucial consideration for VHF handheld radios, especially when used in remote locations. Users often carry spare batteries or use rechargeable battery packs to ensure continuous communication.
Channels and Licensing: VHF radios typically operate on a set of channels within the VHF frequency band. Licensing requirements for using these radios can vary by country, so users should be aware of and comply with local regulations.
Privacy Codes: Some VHF radios come equipped with privacy codes or sub-channels that allow users to communicate privately within a shared frequency band.
Accessories: Many VHF handheld radios can be customized with accessories such as headsets, microphones, and external antennas to enhance their functionality and adapt them to specific needs.
Durability: Given their common use in outdoor and rugged environments, many VHF handheld radios are built to be durable, resistant to water and dust, and capable of withstanding rough handling.
In summary, VHF handheld radios are versatile communication tools used for a range of applications, from outdoor recreation to public safety. They are valued for their reliability, especially in areas with limited cell phone coverage, and they play a critical role in ensuring safety and effective communication in various scenarios.

If using a universal type AC charger, make sure to pay attention to the voltage/amperage/polarity requirements as you can destroy electronics very easily if using the wrong type. User questions & answers
Question: | I can only hit two where I live. Is the extra 3 watts going to gain any range |
Answer: | ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA The extra watts will do less to improve transmission and reception than a quality antenna. As others have said, to increase your signal strength at the receiving radio by one S unit you have to quadruple the power output. The difference between the UV-5R standard radio and the "8 watt" "high power" radios is only a doubling of power. If you are on the move use the Nagoya 771 antenna (and watch you don't poke out your eye). If you are stationary, a homebrew 2 meter dipole or the Ed Fong antenna will significantly improve your transmission and reception. Amateur Extra HAM instructor VP local HAM club |
Question: | what kind of range can I expect |
Answer: | With the included antenna, you will get about 10 kilometers on open area land. About 5 kilometers in suburban settings. In urban settings, aabout a kilometer or two. In a boat, a bit further than 10kilometers. With the Nagoya extended antenna, you can make 20 kilometers, more or less, on open ground. However, use an external antenna on the roof of a building and you can double that range! Power does increase range. But, antenna increases range far more than more power. |
Question: | I am trying to receive frequencies in the 800mhz range but it will not allow me to enter |
Answer: | You can program these for whatever frequencies you want by downloading CHIRP and modifying the radio drivers with a text editor... Then just change the frequency range to 900mhz or whatever you want... I would not suggest trying to transmit at those frequencies but people have had some success with receiving frequencies out of band that way... You may also want to try an RF downconverter if you would rather go the hardware way instead of the software way... More info at http://www.brickolore.com/2012/05/baofeng-uv-5r-extreme-receive.html |
Question: | Which frequencies will I be required to become licensed for? How do I know which repeaters I might use and their associated membership fees? Thank you |
Answer: | You cannot use this radio in any unlicensed frequency. It is not type accepted for any radio service and is therefore illegal to sell, advertise, market, or ship to anywhere in the US. It is probably legal to use in a Ham band if you have a ham license. Ham licenses come with some great benefits, such as being able to use un-aproved radios, it is well worth the effort to get one. BTW, I have two of these radios. They work about as well as a UV-5R, of which they are a derivative They just over-powered a 5 watt radio to make it spit out 8 watts. It gets you VERY little extra distance and the transmission is really really dirty. It blows all over the 2 meter bands. If you want to see what the FCC does to out of service marketing Google "FCC DA-18-980A1". This radio has no legal use in the US except on the ham bands by hams. It is very illegal to use for MURS and FRS, and not even OK for FMRS. It transmits so dirty it is pretty obvious to anyone with a good HR rig with a display or an FCC truck that you are using a BF-F8HP. It's got a rather unique signal signature. If you want a Baofeng get one of these. They are all certified part 90 which makes them legal to sell and ship, and no questions about using them for Ham use. And get a ham license, it really opens up your options. Question: | What is the color of the night time backlight |
Answer: | No |
Question: | A range of five miles sounds low. Is it anyone’s experience that this is adequate? Is there an extension to the antenna to increase the range |
Answer: | That would get you just fine. The portion of the unit that is inserted is right at 3 1/2" and is a snug fit. Since my install was not into metal so I just used a handheld router to cut the hole. Hope that helps. |

Question: | Are they only 120 voltage, can you have then in 220 voltage charging- like in Europe |

Question: | can you talk to 911 communications |
Answer: | It works great in RV's. This is a VHF/ UHF Ham radio. It Transmits on 145.00 to 147.00 Mhz and 440.00 FM only. It will be great for emergencies but you will need to get a Ham license to use it. |
Question: | what kind of ac charger is this shiped with? EU, US, AUST |
Answer: | The quickest, cheapest way to use this radio legally, besides using it on FRS channels and keeping it under the required 2W or 0.5W, whichever one it is (and I'm not even sure if THIS would even be legal because it has a detachable antenna and I'm not sure if that plays a role in it's legality), would be to simply apply for your GMRS license... It's only $70 for 10 years, covers your entire family and your callsign is granted to you usually within hours of them processing your payment... This will allow you to legally use all of the GMRS channels (I believe some GMRS channels share with FRS) transmitting with radios up to 50W. So you can get nice 25-40W base stations, or units in your vehicle or what have you as well. That would be your best bet. You would only be able to transmit on the GMRS channels which is I believe around 465.0000 and above, don't remember the exact channels, but you can scan and listen in on any other channels to your heart's desire. Licensing only covers transmitting, not receiving. For more information on GMRS licensing, check out the FCC's website. They have a utility that you can use called the ULS (Universal Licensing System, or whatever) which allows you to apply for the licenses, pay for, view the status of your application, and view your license information such as callsign at any time. Though you need to register for an FRN, which is a number that you use to log in and apply for stuff or look up information.. Give it a shot, I recently applied for my GMRS license and got my callsign within a couple days. They were running slow, but I kept checking my application status and sure enough a couple hours after the point which the status said that they processed the payment, I received my callsign... You can enter your email address so that you're notified or receive your license electronically, but I haven't received an email from them yet. I just knew that I was approved by checking it repeatedly. |
Question: | do you have to license |
Answer: | Baofeng radio, seller is Mirkit |
