Question:	I can only hit two where I live. Is the extra 3 watts going to gain any range
Answer:	ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA The extra watts will do less to improve transmission and reception than a quality antenna. As others have said, to increase your signal strength at the receiving radio by one S unit you have to quadruple the power output. The difference between the UV-5R standard radio and the "8 watt" "high power" radios is only a doubling of power. If you are on the move use the Nagoya 771 antenna (and watch you don't poke out your eye). If you are stationary, a homebrew 2 meter dipole or the Ed Fong antenna will significantly improve your transmission and reception. Amateur Extra HAM instructor VP local HAM club
Question:	what kind of range can I expect
Answer:	With the included antenna, you will get about 10 kilometers on open area land. About 5 kilometers in suburban settings. In urban settings, aabout a kilometer or two. In a boat, a bit further than 10kilometers. With the Nagoya extended antenna, you can make 20 kilometers, more or less, on open ground. However, use an external antenna on the roof of a building and you can double that range! Power does increase range. But, antenna increases range far more than more power.
Question:	I am trying to receive frequencies in the 800mhz range but it will not allow me to enter
Answer:	You can program these for whatever frequencies you want by downloading CHIRP and modifying the radio drivers with a text editor... Then just change the frequency range to 900mhz or whatever you want... I would not suggest trying to transmit at those frequencies but people have had some success with receiving frequencies out of band that way... Question:	Which frequencies will I be required to become licensed for? How do I know which repeaters I might use and their associated membership fees? Thank you
Answer:	You cannot use this radio in any unlicensed frequency. It is not type accepted for any radio service and is therefore illegal to sell, advertise, market, or ship to anywhere in the US. It is probably legal to use in a Ham band if you have a ham license. Ham licenses come with some great benefits, such as being able to use un-aproved radios, it is well worth the effort to get one. BTW, I have two of these radios. They work about as well as a UV-5R, of which they are a derivative They just over-powered a 5 watt radio to make it spit out 8 watts. It gets you VERY little extra distance and the transmission is really really dirty. It blows all over the 2 meter bands. If you want to see what the FCC does to out of service marketing Google "FCC DA-18-980A1". This radio has no legal use in the US except on the ham bands by hams. It is very illegal to use for MURS and FRS, and not even OK for FMRS. It transmits so dirty it is pretty obvious to anyone with a good HR rig with a display or an FCC truck that you are using a BF-F8HP. It's got a rather unique signal signature. If you want a Baofeng get one of these. They are all certified part 90 which makes them legal to sell and ship, and no questions about using them for Ham use. And get a ham license, it really opens up your options. Question:	Can I get basic NOAA Weather stations on this everywhere (or, everywhere 'within reason
Answer:	Yes. NOAA uses 7 frequencies from 162.400 to 162.550 MHz. You can check the National Weather Service website at for specific frequencies used in your area. There are over 1000 stations, covering all 50 states. Most NOAA stations operate with fairly high power, some with as much as 1000 watts, so they should be very easy to hear.

Answer:	Bottom line is this: If you can put out an RF signal you can be found. Yes many variables go into finding the source and they can find moving signals also. Tens of Thousands of hams and or T-Hunters or Transmitter Hunters are around the globe. If you screw around with the HAM bands you will get caught.Get your Ham license it's easy and enjoy the hobby.

Question:	Is this one a 5 watt or 8 watt ham radio
Answer:	The Tenway that I received is able to transmit low/med/high power and is supposed to be 8watts on high. I don’t have the equipment to test it but did verify there are 3 transmit options. Based on that I believe it is the 8 watt version when in high. Hope this helps. Radio works well so far.

Answer:	You will probably need to get yourself a HAM radio license and connect to a repeater for reliable long-range. Think of this radio basically like a cell phone which has a transmit range measured in meters, but the cell phone tower can reach out and capture your signal and send it just about anywhere in the world. Using a ham radio pretty much like the one mentioned here, I can easily hit a local repeater located 40 miles away, that same repeater then pushes my signal 60 miles further, so I can talk to people 100 miles away using the repeater.

Answer:	This does not have Bluetooth. You can get a headset to plug into the side of the radio. I'm not sure if there's a bluetooth style headset available.

Answer:	No, Not waterproof.
Question:	where you able to use software, ie chirp, the included cd, or downloads to store preset channels
Answer:	Chirp will work with this radio, however, you need to identify the radio as the BF-F8HP model when you set it up. You specify this when you "Download from radio." After you do that, you can modify the programming, then upload it back to the radio using the same settings as when you downloaded.

Answer:	If I recall right it is SMA connector.
Question:	Can you select and scan specific frequencies
Answer:	I have not had the radio long. The instruction manual was not very helpful. I do know that you can select frequency mode and manually enter the frequencies you want to monitor.
Question:	When i use the hand mic, when i press the key on the mic, my radio switches from channel 1 to channel 2. do you know why? how would i stop it
Answer:	The keypad has an upper and lower selector. This allows for quickly accessing different channels. Just need to form muscle memory for which side of the key does which channel bank.

Answer:	It can be used for search and rescue but 2 way are on a different band then ham

Answer:	Probably 8 to 15 miles depending on terrain when used in simplex mode. Using this radio to access 2 meter and 70 cm repeaters would extend the range significantly!!

Answer:	Depending upon which model you buy they also offer a high gain whip antenna which will perform better than the stock one (assuming you are not buying the high end unit at the get go).

Answer:	The GPS receiver is installed but you need the plugin GPS antenna that must be purchased separate. (about $100.00)Any antenna can be used with the proper adapter. If you are using a outside antenna you just need to know what type of connector is on the end of the cable coming from the antenna and purchase the proper adapter. The stock antenna is SMA, but it comes with a SMA to BNC adapter. Adapters range in price from 5 - 10 dollars.
