14 best mobile ham radios

Mobile ham radios, also known as mobile amateur radios or ham transceivers, are two-way radio communication devices used by amateur radio operators, often referred to as "hams." These radios are designed for mobile use in vehicles, such as cars, trucks, or recreational vehicles (RVs), and they play a significant role in amateur radio communication.

Here are some key points related to mobile ham radios:

  1. Amateur Radio: Ham radios are used by licensed amateur radio operators who have obtained the necessary permits and call signs from regulatory authorities like the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States. These operators use ham radios for personal, recreational, and emergency communication.

  2. Frequency Bands: Mobile ham radios operate on specific amateur radio frequency bands allocated by regulatory authorities. These bands can cover a wide range of frequencies, including VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency), among others.

  3. Transceiver: A typical mobile ham radio is a transceiver, which means it can both transmit and receive radio signals. It often includes a microphone for voice transmission and a display for tuning and monitoring.

  4. Output Power: Mobile ham radios can vary in output power, with some capable of transmitting at higher wattages for longer-range communication, while others are designed for local or regional coverage.

  5. Antenna: They are typically installed with an external antenna on the vehicle to improve signal range and performance.

  6. Mobile Installation: Mobile ham radios are designed for installation in vehicles, and they often include features such as mounting brackets, power adapters, and options for connecting external speakers.

  7. Modes of Communication: Ham radio operators can use various modes of communication, including voice (typically using amplitude modulation or frequency modulation), digital modes, and Morse code (CW). Some mobile ham radios also support data transmission and packet radio.

  8. Emergency Communication: Ham radio operators often play a crucial role in emergency communication during disasters when other forms of communication may be compromised. They can provide valuable assistance to emergency services.

  9. Community and HAM Clubs: Ham radio operators often form local and online communities and clubs where they exchange information, participate in contests, and assist with public service events.

  10. Licensing: It's important to note that operating a mobile ham radio requires a valid amateur radio license, which involves passing an exam to demonstrate knowledge of radio regulations and procedures.

Mobile ham radios are a vital part of the amateur radio hobby and provide a means for enthusiasts to connect with others, experiment with radio technology, and contribute to public safety during emergencies.

User questions & answers

Question: What type of antenna jack does this hook up to? SMA? PL-259? Ect
Answer: More then likely it is 5W. You are mixing up your terminology. You are allowed no more then 50W transmit power out of the TRANSMITTER terminals. By the time it goes threw all your wiring and any type of processor and gets to the antenna and if the antenna actually has a gain and transmits, the ERP (effective radiated power) coming OUT of the antenna is limited to 5W for a small base station. There is no mention on the FCC website for mobile but I swear I have read in the past that mobiles were also limited to 5W. The claims of 20 and 30 mile range is a little bogus unless you are going to be standing on top of a TALL hill transmitting down to wide open no tree coverage land. I am not a ham operator but have looked this stuff up in the past, I suggest you do the same as well. You will find out that the privacy channels are not private and if I set my radio with out one I will still hear your conversation if I am still on the main channel.
Question: Has Anyone owned this radio for more than 2 years? How isnit golding up
Answer: As long you are using the same band and same type of radio you should be able to communicate with others regardless of the quantity or the brand of the radios. If you use the Privacy Code feature that some radios have then all the users in your group must have the same code set on their radios to be able to communicate with each other.
Question: Does this radio come with a built-in speaker
Answer: The NOAA receiver works fine. It can monitor the NOAA channels even when set on 2-way channels, and will make an alert tone indicating a weather alert. For an emergency kit, though, you might want to consider the Midland XT511 Basecamp radio, either instead of or in addition to these small units. The Basecamp has the same 2-way radio channels (only 1 - 22, though), the same NOAA channels, etc., but it also has a built-in flashlight and flashing beacon, and it can be powered by either a Ni-MH rechargeable battery or 4 alkaline batteries (there are separate slots for both), and it comes with both AC and DC battery chargers or it can be recharged with the built-in hand crank generator. It's also an AM/FM radio receiver.
Question: I realize this isnt an expensive radio, but how tough its built? Want to use it on my ATV for search and rescue. Anywhere near Milspec
Answer: It's hard to answer this question without adding some basics of radio. These gadgets (FRS Band) operate @ 462+ MHz and indeed is close to "line of sight" (with no obstructions) use, as is everything in this frequency range - this is one of those "Mother Nature is a Bi&$%" things. Couple that with their 500 Mw (1/2 watt) output and it's easy to become disappointed with the range offered. Remember, manufacturers love to tout the best case scenario for their products.Bottom line, these are kiddie toys unless paired with a more powerful (and licensed, as I am) GMRS (Ground Mobile Radio Service) base station using a decent antenna. GMRS licenses are $75 for 5 years and allow operating with up to 50 watts on Ch. 15-22 in this band.de kd5zes

User questions & answers

Question: Can this radio do am tx/rx in 26 to 30mhz
Answer: can receive AM will not Tramsmit
Question: I been using a th-7800 now i just got the th-9800 and my computer sees the programing dongle/cable but it wont read or write and i see its on usb
Answer: It depends on how your programming the radio. are you using the factory software, did you get RT systems software which I highly recommend that's worth the money, or are you using chirp? and some instances too you're going to have trouble with your windows driver it depends on what version of Windows you're using. Anyway you probably just have to change your comport settings which some of the software variations let you choose. Or look into your driver because you might have some driver issues
Question: Tx in usb...? or only fm
Answer: This radio is strictly an FM radio, at least as far as transmitting. It will transmit on the 6 meter, 10 meter, 2 meter, and 70 cm bands, but again, only in FM. It may receive AM on the aircraft bands, but I can't confirm this as both of the CMX138 audio chips in my radio have failed.
Question: Can anyone confirm this radio can work 6meters? I just purchased this unit, programmed with chirp and th9800d software and the radio only does
Answer: The radio works on 6 meters and 10 meters, FM only, and as mentioned in another answer, only the left side of the radio can be used for those bands.

User questions & answers

Question: will this unit do x-band repeat
Answer: There is a SO 239 (female) connector on the back of the radio that accepts a PL 259 (male) connector.
Question: VFO frequency change on the fly? Strange city and away from programming cable. do able
Answer: I have owned this radio for more than a year. It has been in continual 24x7 service for this time as a node radio for Allstar 42119. This means it is 100% duty cycle for hours at a time. I have it set for low power but ran it mid-power for some days before cutting it back to about 7 watts on low power. My mag mount antenna is on my hamshack roof setting on a 2'x2' metal plate. This set up has about 1/2 mile range which is plenty for a local home node.
Question: How does the antenna mount
Answer: Yes, it does have a built in speaker.
Question: What type of antenna connector does it use
Answer: Yup thus far its fallen from some tables (I've now placed rubber studs for non skid underneath the radio) when someone grabbed the mic for a qso.Used with SWR of 3 (by accident) for long qsos.Passes the test for me. Far better than my FT-1900R which overheats at 5watts in 30 mins with a 50% duty cycle and becomes unstable at 64 degrees Celsius.

User questions & answers

Question: Will I be able to communicate with my buddy who has a cobra CB
Answer: Yes it does if you program through chirp.
Question: Does this radio have a scan feature? If so, does it scan fast or slow
Answer: Hi, this radio has two power levels, and they are not “continuous” adjustable form zero to max. Low power is roughly 10watts and hi power is around 20/25watts. Personally I use it at low power all the time, as it is sufficient for my use pattern, and as the hi power is not recommended because of heat generated. Very good radio, by the way. Plenty of receive audio, and good quality transmit audio (not “muffled” like some other Chinese mobiles).
Question: Will this work for emergency frqs? i am a ff-emt and want one for my pov
Answer: how is it connected to the hot wire??u need to connect direct to the battery, that way u turn on with the on/off knob---also do not start car with radio on!! it mite have a power surge and damage the radio.
Question: How do I use this in my house
Answer: In theory, no. But if your local police and EMS are using analog conventional radios that are transmitting in the 136-174MHz / 400 - 480MHz band, then maybe. But if that’s what your buying this for, just get a scanner instead.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a better manual available anywhere beyond the basic 4 page set up guide it ships with
Answer: Most likely not since the CB freq is 26.9MHZ to 27.4MHZ
Question: Can this radio be used as a base station utilizing a home wifi network
Answer: Yes! The memory scan is incredibly fast and using priority scan enables you to have it monitor a single channel every three seconds while scanning. The VFO scan speed is based on the step used. This is MUCH faster than the Chinese radios.
Question: Zello isn’t working
Answer: You may use this unit on emergency frequencies if authorized by your local fire/ ems agency. You may NOT use amateur frequencies without a tech license or higher. Your best bet is a dedicated VHF radio programed to your agency specs.
Question: When we push the microphone button - we have an audible message "no account found on this device" how can we fix this
Answer: You need a power supply capable of putting out at least 10 amps (15 would be better) continuously at 13.8 volts. You also need a good 2-meter antenna. I would recommend building a j-pole. It's easy to build out of 1/2 inch copper pipe, it's not large, and needs no ground plane. It even works well indoors, just keep it at least 5 or 10 feet from other electronics. Also be sure to put a choke near the feed point by making a loop consisting of 4 or 5 turns of coax. Here's a plan: http://www.hamuniverse.com/jpole.html

Question: Can it run strictly analog? Or analog and digital both tuned for options? (It may be silly question, but I can't find it anywhere
Answer: Yes you can run both modes
Question: Is the ut-137 bluetooth board included? if not where can i get the card as it's not showing up anywhere online
Answer: The BT board is sold on Amazon and shipped from GigaParts.
Question: Is this dual band 70 cm and
Answer: 70 cm IS what is considered the 440 Mhz band. It will transmit from 430 to 450 Mhz. That is in addition to the 2 meter band which will transmit from 144 to 148 Mhz. Thus the name "dual band". Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with a separation kit or does it depend on the seller
Answer: It comes with a 6p6c based connector line ('telephone' type cord) for relocating the head unit.Ronald A. is also correct about the speaker being in the main body, so unless you mount it under your seat you will need an extension speaker.
Question: Can you use chirp to program
Answer: YES you can now use CHIRP to program the TH-9800. I just did so this week. However, the cable I got with my radio has a counterfeit chip in it so you may need to roll back the driver. I run windows 10 and had to roll it back. You'll be looking for a driver with 3.2.2 something. Not difficult but something to be aware of. After rolling back teh driver, it works like a charm (CHIRP and the cable).
Question: hello, please somebody cant tell me what base antenna is good for this radio
Answer: If you are planning to use this radio as your base radio (and not mobile), why not use a diplexer to split the antenna connector into two (or more) antenna jacks? That would allow you to have (at a minimum) one antenna for 2m/70cm and another antenna for 6m/10m. Frankly, that will allow much better performance vs. anyone's compromised 4 band antenna (and I've tried several of them).
Question: Is there an extended cable for the removable face plate? Thanks
Answer: It comes with the extension cable and removeable face kit bracket. You will need to provide your own remote speaker or Bluetooth adapter.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this the radio to use ladd 1,2,3,4,. up in northern bc,albt. or alaska
Answer: 154.10000 - ladd 1, 158.94000 - ladd 2, 154.32500 - ladd 3, and 173.37000 ladd 4 can all be transmitted and received on Anytone At-778UV. Frequency's on radio are between Uhf 400-490 and VHF 136-174 MHz. Easy-peazy.
Question: Why do these radios NOT include the programming cable, which is necessary to use this equipment
Answer: I am unsure if this is a real question or a criticism. I would rather these companies include the cable too but the radio can be programmed (configured) through the front panel buttons. Another reason they don't include the cable with each radio is you might already have a cable for that radio. For example, I purchased a $200 AT-5888 from AnyTone which came with a programming cable. When I purchased the AT-778uv, it did not but I already had the cable from the AT-5888 which is the same cable. In closing I'll say in HAM radio some amateurs like to build their own stuff. Building radio programming cables can be fun. I've made a few., I've made a couple AnyTone cables as well even though I already had a factory cable. Beware that the cable schematics you may find on the Internet may work for the AT-5888 but NOT work with the AT-788uv due to a missing signal diode. Enjoy.
Question: will it scan both band simultaneously
Answer: It has dual stby meaning you can monitor both bands simultaneously. If you create a memory list it will scan your memory list regardless of what band it is in.
Question: What is the current draw at full power 25 watts
Answer: You can estimate the max transmit draw on a 12V radio by multiplying the power output by 2. For example, this radio has a 25W output, so 2x25W = 50W. Divided by 12V gives you about 4.2A. This is in the ballpark.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this radio for a home base
Answer: Yes you can, but you'll need a 110v AC to 12v DC power converter and you'll also need a base station type antenna. I'm not sure why you would use this particular unit though because Midland makes a 40watt unit that would be much better suited to base station use.
Question: Are the privacy codes compatible with Motorola talkabout radios
Answer: Yes, however, I also have the T600 talkabouts and I was disappointed in the range between the MXT275 and the T600. I live in the city (Boston) in a neighborhood with lots of houses, so I knew that I had obstructions to deal with. But I thought I would have gotten better performance. The MXT to T600 only got about 50-75 feet further than the two handheld T600s got with each other. I am awaiting the upgraded 3db antenna to see if that helps any. Also, just a note, I did some research and the Talkabouts are limited to max power of 1.5 watts. Probably more realistically 1 watt consistently. I decided to pick up a set of the new Midland T295 handhelds.. as they are rated at nearly 3 watts.. probably 2.5 watts more realistically. But thats still a 150% power increase over the T600s so in theory.. I'm hoping the more powerful handheld.. paired with the MXT and the upgraded 3db antenna will have far better performance. I'm sure I'll have far more success with this set up when we use them on camping trips away from the city tho. Cheers.
Question: Is the internal speaker in the microphone or in the base unit
Answer: There are speakers in both the head unit and the base unit
Question: Does this radio have an internal ID that will show up on another radio or be able to be identified if used with a repeater
Answer: Don’t be fooled, most users don’t and shouldn’t be required to have a license to use this radio. The other answer that says you are required to have and use a call sign is false. You can get a GMRS license which might be a good thing to have. Now if your setting up a repeater I believe you do need to be licensed.
