14 best handheld cb radios

Handheld CB radios, also known as Citizens Band radios, are portable two-way communication devices commonly used for short-range communication in various situations, including on the road, in outdoor activities, and for emergency preparedness. Here's what you need to know about handheld CB radios:

  1. CB Radio Basics: CB radios operate on the Citizens Band radio service, which is a set of 40 channels allocated for public use by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States. They are primarily used for short-distance communication.

  2. Portability: Handheld CB radios are compact and designed for easy portability. They are typically smaller and more convenient to carry than their vehicle-mounted counterparts.

  3. Power Source: These radios are powered by batteries, often rechargeable or replaceable. Some models also offer the option to use external power sources, such as a vehicle's DC power supply.

  4. Channels: CB radios operate on 40 channels, with each channel designated for specific purposes. Channel 9, for example, is commonly used for emergency communications, while channel 19 is popular among truckers for general conversations and traffic updates.

  5. Range: The effective range of handheld CB radios varies depending on factors like terrain and antenna type. In ideal conditions, they can provide communication over several miles. However, the range is typically shorter than that of vehicle-mounted CB radios due to their smaller size and power limitations.

  6. Antenna: Many handheld CB radios have a built-in antenna, which is often shorter and less powerful than the external antennas used with vehicle-mounted CB radios. Antenna length and quality can significantly affect communication range.

  7. Features: Handheld CB radios may offer additional features, such as an LCD display, backlit keypad, channel scanning, NOAA weather alerts, and external speaker/microphone jacks for hands-free operation.

  8. Emergency Use: Channel 9 is designated as the emergency channel on CB radios, and it's monitored for distress calls. Handheld CB radios can be valuable tools for emergency situations, including when traveling in remote areas.

  9. Licensing: In the United States, the use of CB radios does not require an individual license. However, users must comply with FCC regulations, including power output limits and channel usage rules.

  10. Accessories: Users can enhance their handheld CB radio experience with accessories such as external antennas, car chargers, and hands-free microphone/speaker setups.

  11. Usage: Handheld CB radios are commonly used by truckers, off-road enthusiasts, boaters, and outdoor enthusiasts. They are also useful for communication during road trips or in situations where mobile phone coverage is unreliable.

  12. Privacy: It's important to note that CB radio channels are public, and conversations can be heard by anyone tuned to the same channel. There is no built-in encryption or privacy features, so discretion is advised when discussing sensitive information.

Handheld CB radios provide a convenient way to communicate over short distances, making them useful for various recreational and practical applications. They are especially popular among travelers and outdoor enthusiasts who need a reliable means of communication in areas with limited or no cellular coverage.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use a fire stick antenna with this unit
Answer: Jeff: Yes you can. You must use detach the flexible portable antenna, attach the provided vehicle 12 volt power source, and then attach the external antenna to the unit.
Question: are there handle bar mounts for the radio for motorcycle
Answer: The only one I've found was was from J@M model PACB-409-15. And they have a high opinion of it. I slightly modified an ARKON mount with the small pouch. I cut down the belt clip to fit in the bracket on dry days and use the pouch on wet days.
Question: There are many magnetic car mount antennas offered....can you suggest the cheapest yet most effective antenna to go with this unit
Answer: Remember your antenna is the most important part of your radio station.. Go with the Sirio Performer 5000, absolutely one of the best antennas you can get for the money.. You get what you pay for.. I've been a radio operator for over 50 years..
Question: So with the adapter, you can plug the radio into something and it will use your car antenna or some other antenna and get further range? How far
Answer: Your antenna is the most important aspect in getting good range on your CB. For the beginner, your best bet is to buy the Midland 18-2442, Center Load Mag Mount Mobile CB Radio Antenna, available on Amazon for $19.99. It works perfectly with the Midland 75-822 unit. The magnetic base is strong enough to stay put until you remove it. It should be centered on the roof of your car, or truck cab, to radiate the best signal.

User questions & answers

Question: the truck i am currently driving is old and has no cig/12 volt power availible. can i charge this at night and use it without having it plugged in
Answer: No you have to plug it in charge it all the way up or wire a 12 v power adapter from the battery in your truck and you can charge it there
Question: Would this be a strong enough cb for listening to close (< 1 mile) truck drivers communicate while on the highway without an added antenna
Answer: No, it will not likely work. The metal body of the vehicle shields you from the signal of others. I take mine while I am driving on the Interstate. The only thing I have ever picked up is when the truckers are right next to me while I am sitting in traffic and not moving. When I am outside the vehicle, I pick stuff up within a mile or two. Most of the truckers are all using single sideband radios, and you won't be able to pick them up with this radio at all.
Question: what is the exact range this can be used if indoors like say im in a apartment my brother is like 2 miles away in a house will it go that far
Answer: There is NEVER an exact range for radio communication. The FCC rules require that CB's put out no more than 4 watts. I have accidentally talked to a guy in New Zealand from Ventura, CA and also from there to Florida. Other times you can't talk across town with the same radio. In your situation, if the two of you are in rooms with windows that face each other you can probably talk with two of these radios and no outside antenna. But put a small magnet mount outside your window, on a pizza pan (steel) and run a wire from your pizza pan to your radio and connect it to the outside of the antenna connection and now you have an ok base station antenna and ground plain, and will be able to talk much further.
Question: Has anyone used the uniden pro401hh? if so what do you think of it. what is the range of the device and do you think it would work in the woods
Answer: I have used this. In an open field was able to get .4 miles. I have not been in the woods yet.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it come with a antena
Answer: The antena that comes with unit is not very good . It doesn't work in a automobile .
Question: Can you plug into cig lighter while talking on the road
Answer: Yes - it comes with a cigarette lighter plug.
Question: do you have to have a license for this radoi
Answer: CB stands for "Citizens Band", meaning for citizens, which requires no license to operate.
Question: What is the range of this radio if I would get two of them
Answer: Depends on the antenna you use. I used this radio several times in a caravan with another person who used a Cobra CB with roof-mount antenna, as well as some semi trucks. Here's what I found:Included "rubber duck" antenna -- probably 1/2 mile to 1 mile on straightaway, a few car-lengths on curves. (use "low" power to reduce echos)With 29.5 inch mag-mount CB Antenna from RadioShack (fine-tuned with SWR meter after install), about 1-2 miles (use high power)With 102 inch chassis-mounted CB antenna from RadioShack (fine-tuned with SWR meter after install), I reliably and comfortably chatted with trucks at 5-7 miles or my driving buddy at 2 miles (use high power)For comparison, we tried using FRS "family" walkie talkies and they would only work when we were immediately following each other without any curve or vehicles between us.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this radio as a scanner to listen to great lake freighter radio traffic
Answer: Yes, but if you only want to listen to voice traffic, a cheaper VHF, without DSC and GPS, will also work fine. Most are about $100 cheaper. This radio is suitable for recreational vessels involved in racing and coastal cruising.
Question: is this pair of radios? (2 radios for
Answer: Nope, it is a single radio. The two-way designation means it both receives and transmits, as apposed to, say, your car radio, which only receives.
Question: how far off shore will this radio work
Answer: Dennis, I have only used it in local waters but believe this VHF will work 15 to 20 miles away. If you go off shore (15 to 50 miles) you should rely on a VHF with large antenna etc.
Question: If I buy 3 of these radios can I talk and listen to others on the same channel
Answer: Recent FCC change makes it legal to talk from shore to a boat on the water. Must restrict oneself to marine related traffic. Effective January 2017, the use of portable VHF radio ashore is allowed, “so long as it is limited to enhancing the usefulness of marine VHF radios without negatively affecting maritime communications.” From BoatUS Magazine, April-May, 2017

User questions & answers

Question: With this radio can i get channel
Answer: Yes. This radio features all 40 channels.
Question: What is the adapter for
Answer: The adapter slides on the bottom of the radio and provides a power plug for your cigarette lighter and the antenna connector for your vehicle.
Question: What type of antenna mount is on the car adapter
Answer: Magnetic is best so you don't have to drill any holes. An Antenex CB-27 is one of the best. Not cheap, about $75. Just don't pinch the cable in your door frame or get the cable in a tight knot. There is a small copper wire down the middle of the cable to be careful with. The connectors on the radio adapter and the antenna cable are standard.
Question: what is the range of these radios, thanks
Answer: This is a hard one to answer. With the rubber duck antenna and a battery pack I was able to contact another mobile radio right at 1 mile in a urban setting. With the car adapter running a tuned k-30 on top of a truck I was talking clear at 11 miles. With different atmospheric conditions and different antenna mounting and.... you name it distance will be different. Put a linear amp on and you may be heard at 20 plus miles... it all depends.

User questions & answers

Question: I can only hit two where I live. Is the extra 3 watts going to gain any range
Answer: ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA The extra watts will do less to improve transmission and reception than a quality antenna. As others have said, to increase your signal strength at the receiving radio by one S unit you have to quadruple the power output. The difference between the UV-5R standard radio and the "8 watt" "high power" radios is only a doubling of power. If you are on the move use the Nagoya 771 antenna (and watch you don't poke out your eye). If you are stationary, a homebrew 2 meter dipole or the Ed Fong antenna will significantly improve your transmission and reception. Amateur Extra HAM instructor VP local HAM club
Question: what kind of range can I expect
Answer: With the included antenna, you will get about 10 kilometers on open area land. About 5 kilometers in suburban settings. In urban settings, aabout a kilometer or two. In a boat, a bit further than 10kilometers. With the Nagoya extended antenna, you can make 20 kilometers, more or less, on open ground. However, use an external antenna on the roof of a building and you can double that range! Power does increase range. But, antenna increases range far more than more power.
Question: I am trying to receive frequencies in the 800mhz range but it will not allow me to enter
Answer: You can program these for whatever frequencies you want by downloading CHIRP and modifying the radio drivers with a text editor... Then just change the frequency range to 900mhz or whatever you want... I would not suggest trying to transmit at those frequencies but people have had some success with receiving frequencies out of band that way... You may also want to try an RF downconverter if you would rather go the hardware way instead of the software way... More info at http://www.brickolore.com/2012/05/baofeng-uv-5r-extreme-receive.html
Question: Which frequencies will I be required to become licensed for? How do I know which repeaters I might use and their associated membership fees? Thank you
Answer: You cannot use this radio in any unlicensed frequency. It is not type accepted for any radio service and is therefore illegal to sell, advertise, market, or ship to anywhere in the US. It is probably legal to use in a Ham band if you have a ham license. Ham licenses come with some great benefits, such as being able to use un-aproved radios, it is well worth the effort to get one. BTW, I have two of these radios. They work about as well as a UV-5R, of which they are a derivative They just over-powered a 5 watt radio to make it spit out 8 watts. It gets you VERY little extra distance and the transmission is really really dirty. It blows all over the 2 meter bands. If you want to see what the FCC does to out of service marketing Google "FCC DA-18-980A1". This radio has no legal use in the US except on the ham bands by hams. It is very illegal to use for MURS and FRS, and not even OK for FMRS. It transmits so dirty it is pretty obvious to anyone with a good HR rig with a display or an FCC truck that you are using a BF-F8HP. It's got a rather unique signal signature. If you want a Baofeng get one of these. They are all certified part 90 which makes them legal to sell and ship, and no questions about using them for Ham use. And get a ham license, it really opens up your options. User questions & answers

Question: Does the radio have a 12v plug or does it need to be wired up
Answer: And no there is no 12v plug or anything. Just has a positive and negative for wiring to your power supply of your choosing. And yes to needing to be wired up which is easier than you think.
Question: If I wanted to hook this CB up to the cigarette lighter socket, what kind of cord do I need to purchase
Answer: The CB has two wires built in so all you would need is a cigarette lighter socket adapter and wire it up. The wires are about 4' long so you should have no problems where you mount it. The wiring is very easy - that's the set up I have so I can unplug and remove the CB when I'm just driving around locally.
Question: Do i need to buy and antenna for this? Or does it come with one
Answer: It needs an antenna regardless? There is no internal one? Is it ok to leave the small antenna inside the vehicle? Like in the trunk or glove box?
Question: What is frequency output range?what is the wattage
Answer: The 520XL can also be taken to any CB shop and be "peaked and tuned" to over double the factory power. This is a very common practice that any trucker will do with his/her CB. This radio, peaked and tuned will deliver 8.5-9.0 watts with 17-18 watt peaks. This is more than twice the factory (legal) power, and adds significant range and clarity to your radio. As far as I am aware, there are no other compact radios on the market with the ability to be peaked and having the RF gain control in a compact unit is AWESOME. This radio is a gem. Buy it, peak it, love it.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this radio for a home base
Answer: Yes you can, but you'll need a 110v AC to 12v DC power converter and you'll also need a base station type antenna. I'm not sure why you would use this particular unit though because Midland makes a 40watt unit that would be much better suited to base station use.
Question: Are the privacy codes compatible with Motorola talkabout radios
Answer: Yes, however, I also have the T600 talkabouts and I was disappointed in the range between the MXT275 and the T600. I live in the city (Boston) in a neighborhood with lots of houses, so I knew that I had obstructions to deal with. But I thought I would have gotten better performance. The MXT to T600 only got about 50-75 feet further than the two handheld T600s got with each other. I am awaiting the upgraded 3db antenna to see if that helps any. Also, just a note, I did some research and the Talkabouts are limited to max power of 1.5 watts. Probably more realistically 1 watt consistently. I decided to pick up a set of the new Midland T295 handhelds.. as they are rated at nearly 3 watts.. probably 2.5 watts more realistically. But thats still a 150% power increase over the T600s so in theory.. I'm hoping the more powerful handheld.. paired with the MXT and the upgraded 3db antenna will have far better performance. I'm sure I'll have far more success with this set up when we use them on camping trips away from the city tho. Cheers.
Question: Is the internal speaker in the microphone or in the base unit
Answer: There are speakers in both the head unit and the base unit
Question: Does this radio have an internal ID that will show up on another radio or be able to be identified if used with a repeater
Answer: Don’t be fooled, most users don’t and shouldn’t be required to have a license to use this radio. The other answer that says you are required to have and use a call sign is false. You can get a GMRS license which might be a good thing to have. Now if your setting up a repeater I believe you do need to be licensed.

User questions & answers

Question: Can the programming be done on an Apple Mac
Answer: Yes it can and it's relatively straightforward IF you have the right cable. You need CHIRP http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download (get the latest daily build) and then you need this cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HUB0ONK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The beauty of this particular cable is zero drivers are needed, the Mac (at least Yosemite) automatically recognizes it. I wrote about my experience on this at my blog: https://chris.gonyea.com/2015/03/setting-up-a-baofeng-uv-5r-2-chrip-on-my-mac/
Question: Can I get basic NOAA Weather stations on this everywhere (or, everywhere 'within reason
Answer: Yes. NOAA uses 7 frequencies from 162.400 to 162.550 MHz. You can check the National Weather Service website at for specific frequencies used in your area. There are over 1000 stations, covering all 50 states. Most NOAA stations operate with fairly high power, some with as much as 1000 watts, so they should be very easy to hear.
Question: If you transmitt with this unit how can effected partys trace to the source
Answer: Bottom line is this: If you can put out an RF signal you can be found. Yes many variables go into finding the source and they can find moving signals also. Tens of Thousands of hams and or T-Hunters or Transmitter Hunters are around the globe. If you screw around with the HAM bands you will get caught.Get your Ham license it's easy and enjoy the hobby.
Question: Can this be used as a FRS 2-way radio
Answer: Reasons this makes a good "walkie talkie" (even though it is a HT - Handy Talkie 1) Removable antenna - can upgrade your antenna for your specific needs/significant improvement to performance 2) Can program the channels - not just FRS/GMRS channels 2a) Can set adjust power levels to more legal levels 2b) Can program NOAA freqs giving more value 2c) Can use/listen MURS (Multi Use Radio Service) - license free but kinda like GMRS 2d) Can set channels to receive only so nobody transmits channels they should not (NOAA) 2e) Can listen to school bus drivers, some fire departments and anybody else who uses radio (see 2d) 3) Can get test free GMRS license to legally use GMRS at full handheld power 4) Can get you a HAM license (technician class) and program Amateur UHF/VHF channels - impress your friends and ladies at bars 5) Can monitor two channels at once 6) Lots off menu options - customizable 7) Will learn about radios, "bands", frequencies and other cool stuff 8) Has more power than most walkie talkies - i.e. better range - especially if you upgrade the antenna Reasons this DOES NOT makes a good "walkie talkie": 1) To program you need to purchase the programming cable and to download CHIRP (freeware). Of course only one cable is needs for all the radios 2) Have to read instructions, try stuff on computer/radio and have it not work and you need to figure out why and maybe a youtube video or two.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the range and do you recommend this for 10-11 year old's
Answer: The range is good and I would recommend this for 10 to adults
Question: if you get 2 sets for 8 radios will they talk to one another
Answer: Got a 4 set and they all work really well
Question: Do these work well on cruise ships
Answer: I have no experience with cruise ships, but based on how well they work in hotels, I don't see why they wouldn't work.
Question: Do you need to program this radio before you use
Answer: No; however, Chirp is a free software available on the internet that can program a multitude of different kinds of radios if you purchase the program cable. Changing the PL tones to different values with the software can allow you to customize your walkies to avoid hearing others who may be operating on the channel. Very handy feature. Also please keep in mind FRS channels are no license required but they are low power (2 watts max). To use the higher 4 watt GMRS channels, you will need a GMRS license from the FCC. About $70 for 10 years and covers your entire family. FRS and GMRS rules are covered and explained in the FCC document titled “Part 95” which can be seen on the internet. Also much information is a available on MyGMRS dat cam.
