Answer:	Range is a tricky subject. There is stated range by the manufacturer, and then there is the realistic range of the radio which we call consistent range. The RMM2050 is a 2 Watt MURS radio, and operates on VHF frequencies. It does not do well indoors like a UHF radio would, but outdoors will travel 1 mile pretty consistently. We use the radios for a comm system in our race car and it works fine on the straight(near the pits), but gets scratchy on the far side of the tracks we run at. I wish we could go with an antenna on a mast, but can'tbecause the antenna is fixed (which is why I mentioned it.) We like the radios.

But BeiDou is not needed and less accurage.

The units measure position roughly accurate to about 5m and measure distance and areas with accuracies related to that accuracy. Note: Although the units advertise as doing BeiDou besides GPS and GLONASS, the units that I have received only do GPS and GLONASS. In the photo you can see a row of bars for GPS and a row for GLONASS. There is no third row for BeiDou despite the advertising that it will also use BeiDou.

Almost the entire ship is of steel and/or aluminum construction and no radio I know of in this power and price range would work well in that environment. Answer:	Yes you can. The ICOM manual indicates you have to cut the wire harness connector where the black (speaker -) and blue (speaker +) are connected. The radio does not comes with the connector to avoid this. I did just that (cutting the connector), and connected a 4 ohms speaker, and it works like a charm. Just get a regular marine speaker, and you can connect it to the radio directly. The speaker power output from the radio is rated as 5 watts.

Answer:	No. You will be sending / receiving location data and text messages via the radios. Only requirement is that both parties are in range of each other.

Answer:	There are certainly many different choices available to folks regarding radio choices. Many consumers, however, fall into the trap of believing the misleading advertising that various manufacturer’s use to help sell their products, especially when they are in panic mode due to a natural disaster (like an earthquake) or (currently) various lock-down scenarios due to the latest overseas virus. One frequently used example of this buying trap are the claims of 35 to 50 mile range from 1/2 watt UHF FRS/GMRS handheld radios with non-removable antennas (frequently seen on various Cobra, Midland, Motorola, and Uniden radios sold at various big box stores or on the internet). At UHF frequencies (and with a decent antenna), you’ll normally get around 1 mile of range for every 1 watt of power on transmit, so a 1/2 watt big box store FRS/GMRS radio is likely to get only 1/2 mile of range, nowhere near the 35 to 50 mile claims shown on the box in large type (with the phrase “under optimum conditions” shown in very small type). What that means is that if one individual is standing near the cliff face on a tall 9,000 ft. high mountain and his friend is doing the same thing 35 miles away (with nothing between the two mountains but air), then they “may” get the 35 mile range as advertised. When both individuals are at ground level, normal range is reduced to a 1/2 mile (or less) depending upon obstructions that may be in their way.
