10 best chromatic pedal tuners
Chromatic pedal tuners are essential tools for musicians, particularly guitarists and bassists, to ensure their instruments are in tune during performances or practice sessions. These tuners are part of the signal path in a guitarist's setup and are commonly used in electric guitar effects rigs. Here's what you need to know about chromatic pedal tuners:
Purpose: Chromatic pedal tuners are used to accurately tune musical instruments. Unlike traditional tuners that are specific to a particular instrument or tuning, chromatic tuners can detect and display all 12 notes of the chromatic scale, allowing for precise tuning of any note.
Pedal Format: These tuners are designed in a pedal format, which means they can be placed on a pedalboard along with other guitar effects pedals. This placement allows for convenient and quick tuning adjustments during a performance.
Display: Chromatic pedal tuners typically feature an easy-to-read LED or LCD display that shows the current pitch and whether the note is in tune. Some tuners use a needle or a virtual "strobe" display to indicate tuning accuracy.
True Bypass: Many chromatic pedal tuners are equipped with true bypass circuitry. This means that when the tuner is turned off, it does not affect the guitar's signal path, ensuring that your tone remains unaltered when not in use.
Calibration Options: These tuners often provide options for different tuning standards and calibration settings. You can typically choose between A440 (standard pitch) and other reference frequencies depending on your tuning preferences.
Durability: Good-quality chromatic pedal tuners are built to withstand the rigors of live performances. They often have a robust, metal chassis and footswitch for durability and reliability.
Power Source: Chromatic pedal tuners are usually powered by a 9-volt DC power supply, which can be daisy-chained with other pedals on a pedalboard. Some models also offer the option to use batteries.
Mute Function: Many pedal tuners include a mute function, allowing you to silence your instrument when tuning, which can be useful during a live performance or in a studio setting.
Popular Brands: Several reputable brands manufacture chromatic pedal tuners, including Boss, TC Electronic, Korg, Peterson, and others. These brands offer a range of models with different features and price points.
Chromatic pedal tuners are an essential tool for any guitarist or bassist, as they ensure that your instrument is always in tune, which is crucial for producing great-sounding music. The specific features and functionality of a chromatic pedal tuner may vary depending on the brand and model, so it's a good idea to review the product details and user reviews when choosing the right tuner for your needs.

User questions & answers
Question: | I play in c#f#be on bass. how would you make that the setting to tune to |
Answer: | Set it to chromatic. |
Question: | Is this product adequte for a 10 string pedal steel guitar ? I was told to get a tuner that shows the frequency and I do not see a # on the display |
Answer: | This won't show the frequency in Hertz, but it will indicate pitch, and the 10 string pedal steel should be in its range. There is a dot on the display to indicate a sharp. |
Question: | How does the TU-3 effect a fuzz face if it's placed a couple pedals away after the fuzz ? I assume it has a buffer like most Boss pedals |
Answer: | Put fuzz before this tuner or on a loop switcher or on a volume pedal. Especially true for germanium fuzz devices and certain other types of dirt pedals. The Waza version of the TU-3 has a switch that makes it true bypass. If you understand what I'm saying about fuzz pedals then you definitely want that. That said, it's a very good buffer, but it will interact with fuzz pedals in a pretty annoying way. The people who are saying it doesn't affect other pedals don't understand the issue. Some vintage-style Fuzz pedals tend to turn into full volume howling noise when you turn your guitar volume down, if they are on the wrong side of this kind of buffer. This is not a value judgement, and it's inappropriate to invoke Pete Cornish here. Buffered pedals are good. Some very desirable pedals really, really want to be before the first buffer. |
Question: | I see a reviewer fault it for picking up ambient vibration, and one for a slow response time. Anyone else experience these as a problem? Thanks |
Answer: | No, I don’t have those problems, great tuner, great mute button. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What does the center button do |
Answer: | On/Off switch. When On and tuning, no sound gets through to the amp. When playing, you need to turn the tuner to OFF. The LED display is off while you're playing. |
Question: | is it sutable for tuning 8 string low stuff or bass |
Answer: | Works GREAT tuning my 5 string bass... |
Question: | Can you see the screen in the dark, IE.. is it backlit |
Answer: | Yes it is. In fact, the entire backlit screen turns green when the string is in tune (it is blue otherwise, flat or sharp). However, I can't figure out how to change the tuning mode from chromatic to guitar. It works in chromatic mode, but I feel it would work better if it only had EADGBE to choose from. |
Question: | When tuning, does it mute the output |
Answer: | I use this tuner on my pedal board. Yes, it does mute the output when engaged for tuning. It is also true bypass when not tuning. Not a fancy tuner, but perfect for live performance. |

Question: | Can I tune with this while my looper is running? Or will it cut the signal when activated like the Boss tuner |
Answer: | The PolyTune 3 supports alternate tuning as well as changing the reference pitch. You can select the following alternate tuning modes: - Standard Tuning - All strings tuned down 1 semitone - All strings tuned down 2 semitones - All strings tuned down 3 semitones - All strings tuned down 4 semitones - All strings tuned down 5 semitones - 1 Capo at first fret - 2 Capo at second fret - 3 Capo at third fret - 4 Capo at fourth fret - 5 Capo at fifth fret - 6 Capo at sixth fret - 7 Capo at seventh fret Reference pitch starts at 440 hz and is adjustable +/- in 1 hz increments |

Answer: | Yes I use the following: Wireless Microphone System,KIMAFUN 2.4G Wireless Headset microphone,Headset And Handheld 2 In 1,for Voice Amplifier,Teaching, Computer,Teachers, Speak but I don't think it's water proof. |
Question: | Are you restricted to tuning 440 hz? If not what other things are available |

Answer: | Take back to UPS store |
Question: | Deliver in quebec canada |
Answer: | Yes you can tune one string at the time as well |
Question: | What is the return policy |
Answer: | Depends how you set it up. I set the dip switches internally so it's always on. I just push the button to mute it when I'm adjusting tuning. Generally speaking the tuner should be the first thing in your signal chain. Aside from being best spot for a buffer and a tuner it also means muting won't impact your looper |

Question: | Does this ship with the necessary power supply? or is that sold separately |
Answer: | The power supply is sold separately. |
Question: | Can you use a battery |
Answer: | No,one reason Donner pedals are able to be smaller. |
Question: | Does this pedal mute the signal when engaged |

Question: | tuner works great but i get a loud pop in the amp when i turn it on. bad switch |

Question: | How many milliamps of power draw |
Answer: | Correction: This power supply provides up to 1000ma. I am using it for the EHX Soul Food (22ma draw), Russian Big Muff (22ma) and Canyon Delay (150ma)...Also a TC Wiretap (100ma) and a digital tuner (50ma). No problems at all running everything simultaneously. You really cant harm any 9v center negative device with this, it's just a matter of if your draw meets or exceeds 1000 ma. At which point the devices may or may nit work correctly, but will not harm your pedals/devices at all. It also powers Zoom Devices (g1on) with no problems |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this tuner do accurate drop tunings |
Answer: | Yes. I use it for standard but also to adjust during gigs to Eb, Dropped D, etc. Great pedal less than half of its more popular competitors. |
Question: | Is it a true bypass pedal |
Answer: | Although it might say true bypass, it’s definitely not. I’ve had this for a while and it’s been affecting my tone. I can’t get super clean tones with it, there’s a very noticeable break up. Looking for a new tuner. |
Question: | Do you have to hold the switch down, or does it click |
Answer: | It clicks to toggle the tuner on and off. When off the unit passes the signal thru to the amp. When on, it allows you to tune without the sound coming through the amp. At least, when it works. Which it rarely did for me. |
Question: | Can this tuner handle a low B on bass quickly without having to use the harmonic |
Answer: | Hi there. Being the manufacturer we were hoping others would chime in so that you could get real user feedback, but the TinyTune was designed to handle the low B string on a 5-string bass without any issues. Hope that helps! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it have a hard time recognizing the Low B on a 5 string bass like other tuners |
Answer: | Yes, there can be a "pop" noise with this pedal when engaging the switch. This is a characteristic of a "true bypass" switch, which is used to achieve a cleaner signal as compared to a "buffered bypass" switch. |
Question: | Is the switch a soft click like the TC Electronic, or a hard click |
Answer: | Yes it does. Also, make sure you have a proper 9V AC chord to power it. It does not come with one. |
Question: | will this tuner generate "pop" noise to amp when turn on or off with toggle switch |
Answer: | the best is the worst, you get what you pay for!! Boss is the best anything else will cost you less!!! Go ahead and see what you can find for 50 or less and good luck tuning your low B |

User questions & answers
Question: | I bought this pedal, but it doesnt give an accurate tuning. Ive tested it, and it works when being bypassed, just not in tuner mode. What gives |
Answer: | The pedal you have sounds defective, I'd return it. Mine works fine like any tuner pedal. This pedal isn't super precise and accurate, there's a couple of cents of tuning leeway that it doesn't pick up. I'd recommend this pedal if you want something small, cheap, and you ALSO tune by ear. It's really what you pay for. |
Question: | Does it work with a capo |
Answer: | it doesn't work at all... |
Question: | Can you use it for drop tuning or lower tuning on bass |
Answer: | It will tune each individual string to sharps or flats depending on what key your tuning to... |
Question: | Will it tell you what chords you are playing with a capo on |
Answer: | No |
