Answer:	Depends upon what you mean by a realistic range. If you use the low power setting which is free to use, you can figure a quarter mile line of sight based on my trial. To use the high power mode, you need to get an FCC license which costs over $60 for five years. Then you might get several miles depending upon the amount of obstacles between two units. Buildings and mountains will diminish the range. In a city, you'll be dealing with buildings.

Answer:	I am a maritime pilot and I have used it on board a vessel. It's function is good and reliable at sea. But I am notsure its fuction if you use it in the mountain for hunting because there is no obstruction at sea whereas many obstruction in the mountain. Its transmitting output is 3 watt. I am very sorry to make you fully satisaied.

I think the scope of this portable radio is about 10 miles.
