User questions & answers
Question: | Will I be able to communicate with my buddy who has a cobra CB |
Answer: | Yes it does if you program through chirp. |
Question: | Does this radio have a scan feature? If so, does it scan fast or slow |
Answer: | Hi, this radio has two power levels, and they are not “continuous” adjustable form zero to max. Low power is roughly 10watts and hi power is around 20/25watts. Personally I use it at low power all the time, as it is sufficient for my use pattern, and as the hi power is not recommended because of heat generated. Very good radio, by the way. Plenty of receive audio, and good quality transmit audio (not “muffled” like some other Chinese mobiles). |
Question: | Will this work for emergency frqs? i am a ff-emt and want one for my pov |
Answer: | how is it connected to the hot wire??u need to connect direct to the battery, that way u turn on with the on/off knob---also do not start car with radio on!! it mite have a power surge and damage the radio. |
Question: | How do I use this in my house |
Answer: | In theory, no. But if your local police and EMS are using analog conventional radios that are transmitting in the 136-174MHz / 400 - 480MHz band, then maybe. But if that’s what your buying this for, just get a scanner instead. |

User questions & answers
Question: | When using as a crossband repeater am I able to change the frequency/channel remotely via the HT allowing me to move from one repeater to another |
Answer: | Yes, as long as your are using a compatible Kenwood HT (not sure which Kenwood HT's are considered "compatible"). Page 85 of the owner's manual describes how to remotely control they TM-V71A. |
Question: | Is it possible to program a memory channel to have a cross band split? As in when I key the mic it transmits on UHF, but it receives on VHF |
Answer: | Search your manual but I don't think so. You can program anything that has to do with a specific station/repeater into a memory channel, however the function of the radio acting as a repeater is a radio function, not a memory "channel" option. |
Question: | Does the mic plug into the faceplate or the main unit? If main unit, how do you run the mic? Thanks |
Answer: | Microphone does not plug into the faceplate. If you use remote cable for faceplate, your mic will be running from the main unit, not the remote faceplate. |
Question: | Is the progamming cable/software included? If not how much |
Answer: | Programming cable/software is not included. We recommend the RT Systems KRS-V71 programming kit. This item is usually listed on Amazon, but currently out of stock. Should be available in 1 to 2 weeks. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I can only hit two where I live. Is the extra 3 watts going to gain any range |
Answer: | ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA The extra watts will do less to improve transmission and reception than a quality antenna. As others have said, to increase your signal strength at the receiving radio by one S unit you have to quadruple the power output. The difference between the UV-5R standard radio and the "8 watt" "high power" radios is only a doubling of power. If you are on the move use the Nagoya 771 antenna (and watch you don't poke out your eye). If you are stationary, a homebrew 2 meter dipole or the Ed Fong antenna will significantly improve your transmission and reception. Amateur Extra HAM instructor VP local HAM club |
Question: | what kind of range can I expect |
Answer: | With the included antenna, you will get about 10 kilometers on open area land. About 5 kilometers in suburban settings. In urban settings, aabout a kilometer or two. In a boat, a bit further than 10kilometers. With the Nagoya extended antenna, you can make 20 kilometers, more or less, on open ground. However, use an external antenna on the roof of a building and you can double that range! Power does increase range. But, antenna increases range far more than more power. |
Question: | I am trying to receive frequencies in the 800mhz range but it will not allow me to enter |
Answer: | You can program these for whatever frequencies you want by downloading CHIRP and modifying the radio drivers with a text editor... Then just change the frequency range to 900mhz or whatever you want... I would not suggest trying to transmit at those frequencies but people have had some success with receiving frequencies out of band that way... You may also want to try an RF downconverter if you would rather go the hardware way instead of the software way... More info at http://www.brickolore.com/2012/05/baofeng-uv-5r-extreme-receive.html |
Question: | Which frequencies will I be required to become licensed for? How do I know which repeaters I might use and their associated membership fees? Thank you |
Answer: | You cannot use this radio in any unlicensed frequency. It is not type accepted for any radio service and is therefore illegal to sell, advertise, market, or ship to anywhere in the US. It is probably legal to use in a Ham band if you have a ham license. Ham licenses come with some great benefits, such as being able to use un-aproved radios, it is well worth the effort to get one. BTW, I have two of these radios. They work about as well as a UV-5R, of which they are a derivative They just over-powered a 5 watt radio to make it spit out 8 watts. It gets you VERY little extra distance and the transmission is really really dirty. It blows all over the 2 meter bands. If you want to see what the FCC does to out of service marketing Google "FCC DA-18-980A1". This radio has no legal use in the US except on the ham bands by hams. It is very illegal to use for MURS and FRS, and not even OK for FMRS. It transmits so dirty it is pretty obvious to anyone with a good HR rig with a display or an FCC truck that you are using a BF-F8HP. It's got a rather unique signal signature. If you want a Baofeng get one of these. They are all certified part 90 which makes them legal to sell and ship, and no questions about using them for Ham use. And get a ham license, it really opens up your options. User questions & answers
Question: | Do you think the programming cable from the 5888UV can be used on this radio for programming |
Answer: | Yes, it's the same cable. I've used it on both radios. 73 |
Question: | How do you turn the the beep off |
Answer: | There is a setting in the programming software. Function Setup>Vol Setup>Beep Volume: Set to OFF. In the manual I don't see a way to do it without the software. |
Question: | Where is the programming software for this radio? I can't find it anywhere |
Answer: | Chirp does not yet work on this radio as of May 10, 2019 (I just tried). This radio is not in the drop down for Anytone. That said, I bought this radio but under the Midland DBR2500 part number. Midland has software on their website for the DBR2500 and I just programmed a few channels into my radio and it worked okay. Can't say for sure it will work with the AT-778UV but it's the same radio hardware wise and FCC ID wise. |
Question: | Will this radio talk on VHF/marine channels |
Answer: | You could program it with VHF marine channels. |

Hotels & Casinos
In a hotel, where a great number of radio calls are typically concentrated within a single building, a KENWOOD Multi-Site Trunking solution that offers capacity and coverage facilitates quick call setup even when traffic is heavy. Dynamic control channel switchover capability gives the system the “smarts” to temporarily employ a traffic channel as a call channel when traffic is exceptionally busy, enhancing efficiency even further.
Security
Security companies have radio requirements similar to those of the public safety industry. KENWOOD solutions meet and surpass these needs by offering radio dispatch operations based on an IP console. Features include Call Interruption, which can give priority to an interrupting call for rapid response, and the Lone Worker function which enhances safety.
Manufacturing & Plant
Scalability is essential for radio communications at such large sites as refineries, industrial complexes and ports. Our Enhanced Multi-Site Trunking solution with server-based architecture makes it easy to expand capacity and coverage for such facilities. And thanks to outstanding spectrum efficiency and stability, a very large number of users dispersed across the country can communicate smoothly using multiple sites on the same network.
Factory
Factories and industrial units are typically subject to all sorts of ambient noise. Even in such an environment, KENWOOD sound optimization technology accurately replicates natural human speech nuances for superior voice quality. And there is no cause for concern just because your enterprise still uses FM analog equipment: KENWOOD radios switch between digital and analog modes, which also allows for seamless migration at your own pace.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this radio do am tx/rx in 26 to 30mhz |
Answer: | can receive AM will not Tramsmit |
Question: | I been using a th-7800 now i just got the th-9800 and my computer sees the programing dongle/cable but it wont read or write and i see its on usb |
Answer: | It depends on how your programming the radio. are you using the factory software, did you get RT systems software which I highly recommend that's worth the money, or are you using chirp? and some instances too you're going to have trouble with your windows driver it depends on what version of Windows you're using. Anyway you probably just have to change your comport settings which some of the software variations let you choose. Or look into your driver because you might have some driver issues |
Question: | Tx in usb...? or only fm |
Answer: | This radio is strictly an FM radio, at least as far as transmitting. It will transmit on the 6 meter, 10 meter, 2 meter, and 70 cm bands, but again, only in FM. It may receive AM on the aircraft bands, but I can't confirm this as both of the CMX138 audio chips in my radio have failed. |
Question: | Can anyone confirm this radio can work 6meters? I just purchased this unit, programmed with chirp and th9800d software and the radio only does |
Answer: | The radio works on 6 meters and 10 meters, FM only, and as mentioned in another answer, only the left side of the radio can be used for those bands. |

Question: | With the supplied antenna and using it in suburbia (trees, houses, flat topography) what range can I expect on 5W transmit |
Answer: | Probably not anytime soon, as the GT-3 case is different than the UV-5R. This "new" radio is better looking (to some) than the UV-5R, but as others have already mentioned, it's basically a re-worked UV-5R at heart at a much higher price. |
Question: | Is this radio water resistant |
Answer: | Here are a few sites that I use for my radios. The first link has firmware. The second is about "Chirp" one of my favorite for channel programing. You will need a program cable to use in updating or programming. Program cable: https://www.amazon.com/Baofeng-Programming-Cable-BAOFENG-BF-888S/dp/B00CP0I474/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1471476188&sr=8-1&keywords=baofeng+programming+cable Firmware: http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/UV5R-Software.phpChirp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chNKMlxjOr8https://baofengtech.com/download |
Question: | Is this radio for amateurs |
Answer: | The base has a raised ring around it, so my Nagoya antenna from my UV-5R will not fit. I have a high gain MFJ-1717s antenna that fits snugly inside the raised ring and performs very well. |
Question: | can this radio recieve and transmit on the murs channels |
Answer: | Yes it will. You have 7 characters just like the UV-5R series. |
