12 best atomic clocks

Atomic clocks are highly accurate timekeeping devices that are used in various applications, including scientific research, telecommunications, and global navigation systems. Unlike traditional clocks, which rely on mechanical or quartz crystal oscillators, atomic clocks are based on the vibrations of atoms.

Here are some key points about atomic clocks:

  1. Atomic Clock Principles: Atomic clocks operate on the principles of atomic physics. They measure time by counting the vibrations or oscillations of atoms. The most common types of atomic clocks use either cesium or rubidium atoms.

  2. Cesium Atomic Clocks: Cesium atomic clocks are among the most accurate timekeeping devices in existence. They work by exposing cesium atoms to microwave radiation and measuring the frequency at which the atoms absorb and emit this radiation. The International System of Units (SI) defines the second as the duration of 9,192,631,770 oscillations of the cesium-133 atom's microwave radiation.

  3. Rubidium Atomic Clocks: Rubidium atomic clocks are also highly accurate but are typically smaller and more portable than cesium atomic clocks. They use rubidium vapor to measure atomic vibrations.

  4. Applications: Atomic clocks are used in various critical applications, including global positioning systems (GPS), telecommunications networks, financial transactions, and scientific research. Their precision is crucial for synchronizing data transmission and maintaining accurate time references.

  5. Stability and Accuracy: Atomic clocks are incredibly stable and accurate, with deviations from the atomic time scale measured in billionths of a second (nanoseconds). This high level of accuracy is essential for technologies like GPS, which relies on precise time measurements to determine location.

  6. Variants: There are several types of atomic clocks, including hydrogen maser clocks, which use hydrogen atoms, and optical lattice clocks, which use laser-cooled strontium or ytterbium atoms. Optical lattice clocks are even more accurate than traditional atomic clocks.

  7. Standard Timekeeping: Atomic clocks play a crucial role in maintaining Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the global time standard. UTC is used as the basis for civil timekeeping worldwide and is determined by an ensemble of atomic clocks located at various international timekeeping laboratories.

In summary, atomic clocks are essential devices that underpin modern timekeeping and synchronization in various fields, ensuring precision and accuracy in our daily lives, including applications related to wall clocks, clocks, and home decor.

Question: Can this clock b only running on batteries
Answer: The unit runs only on batteries. The clock uses two AA batteries and the outside sensor also uses two AA batteries. I’ve only had my clock a couple of months, but similar clocks I have owned usually run a year or more on a set of batteries.
Question: Do these LaCrosse atomic clocks have a light
Answer: No but I have always been able to see the display in even low light situations
Question: How accurate are the moon phases, that's my main concern
Answer: Works for me. Accurate as how? It shows the phases of the moon that are in sync. Full, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8. Accurate enough. I can compare by looking out at night and seems to be correct.

Question: does it make a difference if you put the batteries in the clock before the outside unit
Answer: I couldn’t get that part working on mine
Question: What are the dimensions of the clock
Answer: HI, Thank you for reaching out. The dimensions are 8.75" across x 7.9" tall x .5" wide. Thanks, The Clock Shop
Question: Our clock suddenly stopped showing correct outside temperature. Does anyone know how I can fix it
Answer: I have the same clock with the same problem. The sensor worked for a couple of weeks and then just stopped. Company has removed the ability to leave a message and does not answer this number. I have not been able to contact them or even find an address, email or physical, to contact them in writing. I contacted Sharp, because their name is on it, and they really don't care or have anything useful to offer other than the same phone number that hasn't been working since at least March 2020 when I first started trying to contact them. Don't waste time or money on the absolute garbage clock from Sharp, Model SPC1107. It's not really a Sharp product , and there's no way to ever get any help WHEN (not if) it fails. The only fix for this junk clock is to simply not own one.
Question: Does the time illuminate at night
Answer: Hi, Thank you for reaching out. The Sharp Model SPC1107, is not backlight and does not illuminate at night. Thanks, The Clock Shop

Question: size
Answer: The whole unit is 7" x 9" and it has a 6" in screen (3.5" x 5"). It's not huge, but a good size. Im looking at it right now on the bookshelf in my office and I can tell you that it's smaller than an 8x10 picture frame but bigger than a 5x8 frame. Hope this helps.
Question: How big are the numbers and dates
Answer: Time is about 1-1/2" and the date is about 1/2". You should be able to read the numbers from 20 ft away.
Question: is this clock lighted
Answer: No, as others have stated its easy to read during sunny daylight hours but if over cast and night hours unless you turn a bright light on you cant read it, I wish it had a dim light background that turned on in darker lighting, its 7:30am July,Tn and Im unable to read it from my chair without tirning a light on. I plan to search for one with a light, alarm feature is usless Ive never used that feature. But it is a great product & would fit my need if it had a sensor dim background lighting, I would rate 5

Answer: Mine did that too for a while. Then finally was able to set mode. BUT, back light is uncontrollable...flashes from light to dark go off, constantly. AND can’t set to atomic. If I turn towards Colorado, can’t see the face.
Question: Does the backlighting work when using battery or does it have to be plugged in to light
Answer: The backlight can be activated with batteries. It stays on for about a minute and then goes off. If your using it as a table top alarm clock it is easy to temporarily activate the light. As a wall clock it is useless.

User questions & answers

Question: How do you change to DST
Answer: During the daylight savings switchover, we get lots of emails from customers asking how daylight savings switches over on their clocks. As long as your clock has a DST (daylight savings time) feature and it is on, then it will likely switch within the next 24-48 hours. Ensuring you have the clock set to the correct time zone will also help. If your daylight savings time has not yet switched, you must check to make sure you have a Marathon clock with the DST feature. If yes, you must switch the DST setting to ON or AUTO instead of OFF or OF. If you do not, then you must manually move the time an hour forward using the MODE or TIME SET button. Every clock is slightly different, if you have difficulties locating this feature, please find the SKU starting with CL, and once you have that SKU go to our website at www.marathonwatch.com, where you will be able to find your clock on our page and view/download the manual. If this does not answer your question, feel free to reach out to us.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this unit have the ability to send its data to a central weather service-- such as Weather Underground? If so, anything additionally needed
Answer: I believe that if there is a computer connection on the readout, the file created in your computer may be in a format that can be sent. You would have to download from the unit and see what you get and see if the weather service could use the file. There used to be local weather nets that took data from private sources.
Question: highest recordable wind speed
Answer: According to the book.2 to 180 mph2 to 156 knots1 to 80 m/s3 to 290 km/hHowever if you are in a hurricane/tornado and you get a 180MPH wind I would bet whatever supporting structure the unit was on would be somewhere down the road.
Question: does this have to hook up to your comp? my bro doesn't have mac
Answer: you don't have to hook it up to a computer but that is where most of the bars and graphs are. otherwise you do get yearly and monthly, daily amounts of rain ,wind, etc from the base unit.
Question: Looking to get a weather station to mount to my roof/side that is networkable and can access via phone app/web interface. recommendations
Answer: You can upload to WeatherLink.com and access your data on your computer or smartphone with WeatherLink mobile app. You do need a Davis data logger to do this, as well as the station.

troubleshooting Steps : Remove all batteries from outdoor sensor and clock. Press one of the buttons on the clock at least 20 times to clear all memory. Verify that the clock is blank before proceeding (there may be lines painted on the screen). Leave both units without power for 15 minutes (very important). Insert fresh batteries into the outdoor sensor. Insert fresh batteries into the clock. Keep the outdoor sensor 5-10 feet from the clock. When RF connection is established, the temperature will appear on the station. Allow the outdoor sensor and clock to sit together for 15 minutes to establish a strong connection. Do not press buttons for 15 minutes. For optimum 915MHz transmission, the outdoor transmitter should be a distance of no more than 200 feet (60 meters, open air) from the clock.

Note: Distance: The maximum transmitting range in open air is over 200 feet (60 meters) between the outdoor transmitter and the clock. Consider what is in the signal path between the clock and the transmitter. Consider the distance the clock is located away from other electronic in the home. Resistance: Obstacles such as walls, windows, stucco, concrete, and large metal objects can reduce the range. When considering the distance between the transmitter and the clock (200 feet open air) cut that distance in half for each wall, window, tree, bush or other obstruction in the signal path. Closer is better. Do not mount the transmitter on a metal fence. This significantly reduces the effective range. Interference: Consider items in the signal path between the transmitter and the clock. Sometime a simple relocation of the transmitter or the clock will correct the interference issue. Windows can reflect the radio signal. Metal will absorb the RF (radio frequency) signal. Stucco is held to the wall by a metal mesh. Transmitting antennas (ham radio, emergency dispatch center, airports, military base etc.) Electrical wires (utilities, cable etc.) Vegetation is full of moisture and reduces signal.

How do atomic clocks work?

Atomic clock is an extremely Accurate Timepiece. Most atomic clocks in North America use WWVB's transmissions to set the correct time automatically. They can receive the time signal transmitted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).The NIST broadcasts the time signal (WWVB,60KHz) continuously from Fort Collins, Colorado. It is expected that the signal can reach a distance of over 2,000 miles from the transmitter. This signal can be received anywhere in the continental USA and Canada .

Important:Understanding the impact of temperature and humidity

Knowing your home’s temperature and humidity level is essential to improving indoor air quality and the overall health and comfort of you and your families. To ensure your home’s air quality, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests maintaining proper indoor temperature and relative humidity (RH) levels to reduce the effects of many of unwanted conditions associated with poor indoor air quality.

User questions & answers

Question: What if we set it to international time zones, will the radio interfere with this
Answer: Yes. This clock is made to work atomically only for the 4 time zones in the US: Pacific, Mountain, Central and Eastern. Outside of these time zones, the quartz capability operates, while the atomic capability is inoperable.
Question: Is the clock totally silent? I can't stand the noise that some clocks can make. I do not want to hear the hands moving at all
Answer: I have never noticed any noise out of the clocks. I have 10 or more at my work. Some are in offices and no one ever mentioned noise from them. I have a kuckoo clock at home, so I must admit clock noise is not an issue for me.
Question: Does this clock "tick-tock" or is it silent? Thanks
Answer: Mine varies, sometimes silent and sometimes ticks rather loudly, easily audible from across the room if nothing else is making noise. However it's a fairly low-pitch airy tick sound that I don't find annoying at all. I probably wouldn't want it in a bedroom or a study room though.
Question: We have tried 3 times with new batteries and the clock will work for 5 hours and then stop
Answer: I found that over the first year, it could not handle the daylight saving/standard time switch at all. After the first year, it has generally not kept accurate time at all -- started off by being an hour off, but now just random amounts of time off: anywhere form 5 minutes off to 50 minutes off the time. I've pitched mine into the trash and will look for another brand.I believe that almost all the analog clocks sold on Amazon have the same mechanism made in China (the brand like "Lacrosse" or others is just the maker of the external stuff). Generally, they stop working after a year or two. Read all the reviews. I've given up trying to buy a wall clock on Amazon and will get one at a store where returns are easy if there is a problem.
