User questions & answers
Question: | for a cb radio’s with no swr adjustment knob does this need to be hooked up at all times since you have to use this meters own swr calibration knob |
Answer: | I'm pretty sure it does. I don't have any bands to test with though. |
Question: | Does it work on 3-30mhz bands |
Answer: | Their PL259 connectors on both ends to fit the meter and antenna... |
Question: | Can i use the p1-259 connectors for the antenna part of the swr meter? even though it comes with the so-239? can they be two different sizes? is that |
Answer: | Field strength is the strength of the electric field (units of volts/meter) (or of the magnetic field) radiated by the radio and antenna combination. You are quite right: a calibrated antenna and receiver/meter are needed. Field strength depends on polarization and configuration of the antenna and its ground plane and on the location and orientation of the detector antenna. If the impedances of the antenna cable and antenna are not matched, then some of the signal is radiated, but some reflects back and forth between the radio and the antenna. this builds up energy in the cable that is partly radiated and partly absorbed by the radio power output transistors, which can damage the radio if the standing wave ratio is too high. How high depends on the design of the radio. SWR > 1.5 is generally bad. SWR of 1 is perfect (all the signal power goes out the antenna with none reflected. 1.1 is good, 1.2 is less good. So the SWR meter is connected between the radio and the antenna where is can observe the outgoing and reflected signals in the cable. Perhaps the FS scale is simply making assumptions about the antenna and ground plane to estimate what the field strength would be if the assumptions were correct. But it doesn't measure the field. |
Question: | The add states that this unit will check SWR/POWER/FIELD STRENGTH, but the directions don't mention Field Strength readings. I believe you would need a antenna on the meter to do that. The dial has a FS scale but no antenna. Anybody have any input on this subject |
Answer: | You might end up losing signal together when the connector falls off like mine did. The connector was not soldered and easily fell off when connecting to my antenna. Look to someone else and not MPD cables. RG-8U/RG-213 is probably overkill for CB frequencies. It is useful for hams in the VHF/UHF range. I suggest good quality RG-8X for your application; more flexible and will save you money. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this cable ready for installation? Does it have all the connectors |
Answer: | No it's RG213 but pretty good specs for a short 20ft run though, and not too much loss even at the 70cm 440mhz band. It's pretty flexible. More flexible than the standard LMR400 I purchased from MPD. I can't compare to ultra flex as I never bought any myself. The folks are good at answering any questions there at MPD and the connections look great to me. Quality stuff for sure. |
Question: | Is this lmr ultra flex or normal lmr? thanks |
Answer: | This cable is specifically designed for HF rigs , 11 meter .It would work like any other cable connected to a receiver including scanner but In order to use this you will need to change out the pl - 259 connectors. Not recommend for your use |
Question: | suitable for a scanner outdoor antena |
Answer: | No. Once your antenna has been adjusted the meter can be removed. You may want to connect it from time to time to check the SWR of the antenna. |

Sometimes you really Need our Times LMR Cable Assemblies
Using a RG-58 jumper for a 5 GHz WiFi Antenna will reduce your signal by around 1 DB per Foot. RG-8x is a bit better and RG-213 is specified for some very short runs by a few manufacturers but Times Microwave LMR cables were designed for high frequency communication and will work best.
For GPS, Cellular or SatPhone Services
RG cable was designed for use at UHF and lower frequencies. Using an RG- jumper of any type on a Satellite Phone or GPS Antenna is like mounting bicycle tires on a sports car. RG cables fair little better for Cell Antennas. Cellular phones lowest broadcast signal is twice as high as RG coax is rated and ranges up to 4 times the specified frequency ratings.

LMR-195
LMR-195 Coax is the same size as RG-58 & RG-316. Constructed for use up to 10 GHz, LMR195 makes a great cable for short runs at WiFi and Cellular frequencies and is equally suited for runs up to 100 feet for HF and VHF use. For CB, HF, and VHF antennas LMR-195 is Far Superior to RG-58.
The PE jacket used on LMR-159 makes it much tougher and able to stand abrasion and take a beating. It also makes it a bit less flexible than RG-58.
LMR-240
LMR-240 Coax is the same size as RG-8x or Mini-8 cable, about 1/4 inch in diameter. Although it is just a bit larger than LMR-195, LMR240 offers a significantly larger center conductor and supports better signal retention for longer cable runs and higher frequency use.
LMR-240 is an excellent cable for runs up to 25-30 feet in WiFi and Cellular use, and provides superior performance for HF/UHF/VHF installation up to 150 feet. The PE jacket used on LMR-240 makes it tougher and able to stand abrasion. It also makes it a bit less flexible than similar sized RG Type coax.
LMR-400
The First and still the Best! LMR-400 Coax is the same size as RG-8U or RG-213 cable, .405 inches in diameter. A larger cable means a MUCH larger center conductor and supports better signal retention for HF/VHF/UHF and higher frequency use. Like all LMR cables the PE Jacket and Dual Shield eliminates the need for conduit and avoiding electrical sources.
LMR-400 is an excellent cable for runs up to 50-70 feet in WiFi and Cellular use, and provides superior performance for HF/UHF/VHF installation up to 250 feet. The PE jacket used on LMR-400 makes it able to stand abrasion.

Sometimes MPD Digitals US Made RG Coax Works Better
We had a customer run 10,000 Watts of Power at 800 MHz. The cable failed. While we have coax cable made for up to 20 Kw, its not LMR.
Avoid Repeated Flexing and Bending
LMR comes in different versions, standard LMR is one of the most used, but has a solid center conductor. If you need a cable for a rotor, or installation where the cable will be bending up to 90 degrees often during use we build cables using LMR Ultra Flex.
LMR UltraFlex coax or PVC jacketed braided RG Coax is the go to cable for ultimate flexibility!

User questions & answers
Question: | Looking to use this for vhf/uhf, what is the ohm rating? Loss per 100ft |
Answer: | Yes, this cable uses a R0HS complaint, UV resistant and 60 Celsius PVC wire and cable compound. |
Question: | Is this cable UV rated for outdoor use |
Answer: | Thank you for your question! This cable will work as you may just need to purchase different connectors. Typically, scanners require a coax RG58A with a SMA male to a UHF female connector. |
Question: | Would this work good with scanners |
Answer: | You could, but rg58u would probably work better for that application. |
Question: | can i use this for my mobile cb |
Answer: | This should work fine for a repeater. The real question as to if you need 400 or 600 has to do with the frequency. if you are at 70cm (420 Mhz) or higher you would see a little less loss with LMR-600 but for all others you are fine with LMR-400. |

Answer: | Yes you can, however the output power will drop drastically (form 5 to I think about 2W) with no indication on the display - it would still show “H” for High power. With the included battery pack though (which is essentially 5 1.2 NiMH AAA batteries in series) it achieves 5W transmit power. Which means if you buy it because of 5W output you must use battery pack. However battery pack does not last long. It is only 700mAh. Radio consumes 42mA on standby. So about 16 hours standby time if you don’t transmit. Charding time on the other hand is 12 hours. Make your own conclusions. |
Question: | what is the best REAL range I can expect |
Answer: | There are certainly many different choices available to folks regarding radio choices. Many consumers, however, fall into the trap of believing the misleading advertising that various manufacturer’s use to help sell their products, especially when they are in panic mode due to a natural disaster (like an earthquake) or (currently) various lock-down scenarios due to the latest overseas virus. One frequently used example of this buying trap are the claims of 35 to 50 mile range from 1/2 watt UHF FRS/GMRS handheld radios with non-removable antennas (frequently seen on various Cobra, Midland, Motorola, and Uniden radios sold at various big box stores or on the internet). At UHF frequencies (and with a decent antenna), you’ll normally get around 1 mile of range for every 1 watt of power on transmit, so a 1/2 watt big box store FRS/GMRS radio is likely to get only 1/2 mile of range, nowhere near the 35 to 50 mile claims shown on the box in large type (with the phrase “under optimum conditions” shown in very small type). What that means is that if one individual is standing near the cliff face on a tall 9,000 ft. high mountain and his friend is doing the same thing 35 miles away (with nothing between the two mountains but air), then they “may” get the 35 mile range as advertised. When both individuals are at ground level, normal range is reduced to a 1/2 mile (or less) depending upon obstructions that may be in their way. |
Question: | How much range can I expect from these radios in rugged, mountainous and forested terrain |
Answer: | Expect |
Question: | do I need a gmrs license |
Answer: | I called the FCC. If the radio goes beyond 2 watts, even if you are only using the lower-power channels, you still need to spend the $70 for the 10 year license. immediate family can use radios with your license (and you on the channel). GMRS will make for a better experience. I would just get it to be safe. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use a fire stick antenna with this unit |
Answer: | Jeff: Yes you can. You must use detach the flexible portable antenna, attach the provided vehicle 12 volt power source, and then attach the external antenna to the unit. |
Question: | are there handle bar mounts for the radio for motorcycle |
Answer: | The only one I've found was was from J@M model PACB-409-15. And they have a high opinion of it. I slightly modified an ARKON mount with the small pouch. I cut down the belt clip to fit in the bracket on dry days and use the pouch on wet days. |
Question: | There are many magnetic car mount antennas offered....can you suggest the cheapest yet most effective antenna to go with this unit |
Answer: | Remember your antenna is the most important part of your radio station.. Go with the Sirio Performer 5000, absolutely one of the best antennas you can get for the money.. You get what you pay for.. I've been a radio operator for over 50 years.. |
Question: | So with the adapter, you can plug the radio into something and it will use your car antenna or some other antenna and get further range? How far |
Answer: | Your antenna is the most important aspect in getting good range on your CB. For the beginner, your best bet is to buy the Midland 18-2442, Center Load Mag Mount Mobile CB Radio Antenna, available on Amazon for $19.99. It works perfectly with the Midland 75-822 unit. The magnetic base is strong enough to stay put until you remove it. It should be centered on the roof of your car, or truck cab, to radiate the best signal. |

"The BC355N is an affordable, basic mobile scanner that's great for home or mobile use, with 300 storable channels, coverage of all the ""action"" bands, convenient features like ""close call"" and program lock, and a wealth of powering options for different applications. Receives conventional channels on the following frequencies: (25-54 MHz) (108-174 MHz) (225-380 MHz) (406-512 MHz) (806-956 MHz) (excluding cellular telephone bands) "
- The Uniden Bearcat BC355N Mobile/Base Scanner is one of the most feature packed, user-friendly, entry level scanners available today. It can pick up analog receptions including 6 Service banks for monitoring Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Services, Marine, Air, Weather, and CB frequencies.
- The BC355N features “Close Call RF Capture Technology,” which instantly tunes to signals from nearby transmitters. This pre-programmed search makes it easier to find active frequencies and helps you stay on top of local happenings and emergencies in your area. 100 ch/sec Scan Speed (max)
- You can save up to 300 frequencies that are scanned along with the preset frequencies. So whenever you encounter a newly activated local frequency for any service category, you can add it to the bank for that category. This gives you quick access to the frequencies you want to hear.
- The BC355N comes complete with a backlit display, making it easier to read in low light conditions, along with AC adapter, a DC power cable and an automotive power outlet plug, giving you more options for supplying power at home or in your car. Frequency range for aircraft band is AM mode 8.33 STEP (kHz) at 108.0000, 136.9916(Lower and Upper)
- If you’re looking for an affordable way to jump into the world of scanners, the BC355N may be the right choice for you. (Please note: model BC355N is not suitable for trunking or digital radio system monitoring. If you live in an area where trunking or digital radio systems are used, you need to upgrade to a Uniden Digital model (“D” stands for Digital), such as models BCD996P2, BCD436HP, BCD536HP, BCD325P2, or HomePatrol-2.
User questions & answers
Question: | I know nothing about scanners in general. Is this a good scanner for beginners, and does it come with everything needed to set up and listen |
Answer: | In short, it is a good basic starter scanner. It will get you all analog transmissions from 27Mhz all the way up to 800Mhz.For a beginner scanner though, it can be a little tough to program manually. I learned through google searches and youtube videos. But if you want to just figure out what is going on around you, the scanner is preset to scanner different frequency stretches with the push of a button. So you can tell it to search just the standard police/fire/ems frequencies, or just the aircraft frequencies instead of manually programming.Oh, and yes this comes with enough accessories to permanently (wiring harness) or temporarily (cig lighter) set up in your car/truck or in your home as a base scanner (wall plug).Hope that helps.. |
Question: | What is the difference between the Uniden Scanner model number BC355N and the Uniden Scanner with model number BC355C |
Answer: | The 335N is just an updated model. The BC355C is no longer in production by Uniden instead the newer BC355N is the current production model. Both scanners are essentially the same aside from very minor technical specifications, just one is currently in production and the other isn't. |
Question: | what type of external antenna connector does it take I want to use it in my RV and I have a car type push in plug does that work |
Answer: | This is a helpful tool, now in most area police use a different type of radio. They use a p25 phase 2 to help prevent people from hearing them. The scanner for that kinda of radio comes at a high price! I work in EMS, I use this radio when I’m not working to try to avoid any road that has a MVA. I also go to calls sometimes if man power is requested |
Question: | does the scanner recieve annalog or digital transmissions |
Answer: | Perhaps the a new model was released under the same part number, because there are many answer from 2013 stating this is not a digital scanner and that this is not a trunking scanner, but today in 2017 it clearly is. The description lists P25 Phase I and II as well as X-TDMA. P25 is the digital radio standard for public safety. X-TDMA is the digital standard for multimedia data over radio. There is also a lengthy list of trunking technologies that are supported by this model. Amazon should clean up and delete the old misleading answers as they no longer apply. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the programming be done on an Apple Mac |
Answer: | Yes it can and it's relatively straightforward IF you have the right cable. You need CHIRP http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download (get the latest daily build) and then you need this cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HUB0ONK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The beauty of this particular cable is zero drivers are needed, the Mac (at least Yosemite) automatically recognizes it. I wrote about my experience on this at my blog: https://chris.gonyea.com/2015/03/setting-up-a-baofeng-uv-5r-2-chrip-on-my-mac/ |
Question: | Can I get basic NOAA Weather stations on this everywhere (or, everywhere 'within reason |
Answer: | Yes. NOAA uses 7 frequencies from 162.400 to 162.550 MHz. You can check the National Weather Service website at for specific frequencies used in your area. There are over 1000 stations, covering all 50 states. Most NOAA stations operate with fairly high power, some with as much as 1000 watts, so they should be very easy to hear. |
Question: | If you transmitt with this unit how can effected partys trace to the source |
Answer: | Bottom line is this: If you can put out an RF signal you can be found. Yes many variables go into finding the source and they can find moving signals also. Tens of Thousands of hams and or T-Hunters or Transmitter Hunters are around the globe. If you screw around with the HAM bands you will get caught.Get your Ham license it's easy and enjoy the hobby. |
Question: | Can this be used as a FRS 2-way radio |
Answer: | Reasons this makes a good "walkie talkie" (even though it is a HT - Handy Talkie 1) Removable antenna - can upgrade your antenna for your specific needs/significant improvement to performance 2) Can program the channels - not just FRS/GMRS channels 2a) Can set adjust power levels to more legal levels 2b) Can program NOAA freqs giving more value 2c) Can use/listen MURS (Multi Use Radio Service) - license free but kinda like GMRS 2d) Can set channels to receive only so nobody transmits channels they should not (NOAA) 2e) Can listen to school bus drivers, some fire departments and anybody else who uses radio (see 2d) 3) Can get test free GMRS license to legally use GMRS at full handheld power 4) Can get you a HAM license (technician class) and program Amateur UHF/VHF channels - impress your friends and ladies at bars 5) Can monitor two channels at once 6) Lots off menu options - customizable 7) Will learn about radios, "bands", frequencies and other cool stuff 8) Has more power than most walkie talkies - i.e. better range - especially if you upgrade the antenna Reasons this DOES NOT makes a good "walkie talkie": 1) To program you need to purchase the programming cable and to download CHIRP (freeware). Of course only one cable is needs for all the radios 2) Have to read instructions, try stuff on computer/radio and have it not work and you need to figure out why and maybe a youtube video or two. |

For over 50 years of excellence in the CB category, the 29 LTD Classic continues to be the radio standard of the current and future Professional Driver. The 29 LTD is continued to be manufactured based on the original design which has been known for performance and durability. Professional driver-requested improvements have been made thru-out the years to continue to enhance performance and durability continuing the un-matched Cobra tradition. The CB radio has been around since the 1930s. To see that the Citizens Band is still being produced and sold is testament to its reliability and usefulness. Cobra has brought back their version of the CB with this 29-LTD. They've made some nice improvements to the CB you might have used a decade or two ago. Key improvements to this radio include a front panel microphone connector which makes in-dash installation a cinch. Cobra has also provided a nine foot microphone cord so that you keep in touch from a good distance, whether you're located in a truck cab or dispatch office. The final noteworthy improvement are tactile controls for safer, and more accurate, functionality. Other features include: antenna warning indicator, SWR calibration, instant Channel 9, PA capability, dimmer control, switchable noise blanker and RF gain. In a time of seemingly un-ending technological advances, it's nice to see something we created back in the late 1930s is still alive and kicking. What's in the Box One 29-LTD CB radio, nine foot microphone cord, transceiver bracket, microphone bracket, DC power cord, a user's manual, and a two year limited warranty.
