14 best players with cassette recorders

Players with cassette recorders, often referred to as "boomboxes," were popular portable audio devices in the late 20th century, primarily during the 1980s and early 1990s. These devices combined a cassette player/recorder with an AM/FM radio and often included built-in speakers. Here's what you need to know about them:

  1. Design: Boomboxes typically featured a large, rectangular design with a handle for easy carrying. They were known for their bold and eye-catching aesthetics, often with colorful designs and flashy buttons.

  2. Audio Playback: Boomboxes could play cassette tapes, which allowed users to listen to their favorite music or audio recordings. They had cassette decks for both playback and recording. Some models also had features like auto-reverse, which would flip the tape to play the other side automatically.

  3. Radio Tuner: Most boomboxes included an AM/FM radio tuner, allowing users to listen to radio broadcasts. This feature provided additional entertainment options beyond cassette playback.

  4. Speakers: Boomboxes had built-in speakers that could deliver surprisingly loud sound for a portable device. Some high-end models even featured stereo speakers for a better audio experience.

  5. Battery and AC Power: Boomboxes could be powered by batteries (usually D-cell batteries) or by plugging them into an electrical outlet, offering flexibility for portable or stationary use.

  6. Recording Function: Many boomboxes had recording capabilities, allowing users to create their mixtapes or record audio from external sources, such as the radio or another cassette.

  7. Portability: The handle and battery operation made boomboxes highly portable, and they were a common sight at parks, beaches, picnics, and street gatherings, often associated with hip-hop culture.

  8. Cultural Impact: Boomboxes played a significant role in pop culture, particularly in the 1980s. They were often featured in music videos, movies, and TV shows, becoming iconic symbols of the era.

  9. Decline in Popularity: As technology evolved, portable CD players, MP3 players, and ultimately smartphones replaced boomboxes as the preferred portable music devices. This led to a decline in the popularity of boomboxes by the late 1990s.

  10. Collector's Items: Today, vintage boomboxes are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts, and well-preserved models can command high prices.

In summary, players with cassette recorders, commonly known as boomboxes, were portable audio devices that gained popularity in the 1980s. They were known for their cassette playback, radio tuning, built-in speakers, and recording capabilities. While they have largely been replaced by more modern technology, they remain a nostalgic and iconic part of the audio and pop culture history of their era.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you senr music through the USB cable to a computer
Answer: No, the usb cable is just for power.
Question: Can it play metal alloy tapes
Answer: In Dec2020, with my black model, it works with ferric and chrome type tapes, and technically plays metal but sounds a bit “off”. Hard to describe and many average users may not notice this at all, but for a cheap cassette player - this works
Question: do you have cleaners
Answer: No, I do not have cleaners. The player eats batteries like popcorn. Batteries only last for 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Have to take the batteries out after a half hour use and put back when ready to use again or the batteries go dead. Not a good buy.
Question: what kind of cassette type does it work with
Answer: Full size cassette not the micro type.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the depth
Answer: It's kind of hard to describe and explain, but there's a clip on each speaker that you *slide* into the main component. When you hear it click, it's attached. It takes some finagling though.
Question: Does this have good bass and volume for outdoor events
Answer: NO
Question: Will this connect with a DVD Player? Does the remote have volume control
Answer: The hook up for the speakers is in the style of your typical 1/8" headphone jack. There are two in the back that are meant for the speakers but you could hook up you earphones to one of them.
Question: Is it loud enough to use while working, with hammers and shop vacuums, etc
Answer: The 4ohms on the back of your speaker means that if you have a problem with that speaker, and it doesn't sound right .when looking for or ordering a new replacement speaker it would have to be rated as 4ohms. Also when ordering you will need the dementions (meaning the size) of the speaker. I have found that Speakers only is a great place to try and parts express also. The 8 watts is the output of your speakers . Good for a small apartment and for the price.

Answer: Mine gave me a computer virus. I never got to use it.
Question: Doesv this machine have a tape counter so one can go to an important passage by the indicated number
Answer: Instruction booklet.
Question: What kind of batteries does this machine take
Answer: This is a 1 watt radio. BUT, because of the type of wavelength it carries (900 Mhz), the 1 watt gives almost as much range as a 4-watt UHF.
Question: how do you return items
Answer: Actually it is neither. The DTR600 operates at 900 MHz on the ISM band and does not require an FCC license. The DTR600 will communicate with other Motorola radios that operate on the 900 MHz ISM band like the DLR, but will not communicate with UHF or VHF radios.

User questions & answers

Question: Hi, again. Is this the same with following product or different? I am confused. Thanks in advance. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-CFDS50-Portable-Cassette
Answer: The same product.
Question: This says 30 radio station presets. it said that too on another sony model i ordered, but it really only had 3 presets. how many on this model
Answer: You can store 30 stations but you can only get to 3 of them using the 3 buttons. For the other stations you have to code in the number you set for that station to listen to it. I don't have more then 3 preset so never tried that part of the system.
Question: Says it's portable but does it have a carrying handle
Answer: I returned that particular player because I thought it was not the standard of quality it should have been. I have a Sony now that I bought elsewhere and it does not have a handle.
Question: Can any one tell me the model number of this
Answer: CFD S50

User questions & answers

Question: does it come with wall plug-in or adapter
Answer: I don't think so, There is no software manager for this keyboard
Question: Can I use this to make mixtapes (will it connect to a CD player/cassette player
Answer: these switches are cross-mounted, meaning that any keycap set that has the cherry cross-mount design should fit. there are also different profiles for different heights and contours of the keyboard. cherry, oem, dsa, and sa are a few well known profiles that you could check out, spanning from the flattest and less curved profiles to the taller more curved profiles. I am currently typing on a keyboard with sa keycaps, which really bring out the sound of the switches, are super durable, and fit my hands rather nicely, giving me a more desirable and comfortable typing experience. for gaming I recommend just cherry or oem profiles, because there will be less space between keys, and less overall key wabble, which can lead to miss clicking from my own experience. as sa profile keys are taller, it might strain your fingers to reach up to the number row or even the f keys. but your results may vary, it is a very customizable and very personal subject. in all honesty, you could just keep the original keycaps if you wanted
Question: I am looking for something to play my old cassettes on. Will this work for that
Answer: For anyone that is stuck here: Fn + Enter - Turn on/off arrow key function layer Fn + Left Control - Turn on/off function key layer Use arrows/function keys as one off: Fn + Right Alt -> Left Arrow Fn + Right page icon thing -> Down Arrow Fn + Right ctrl -> Right Arrow Fn + Question Mark -> Up Arrow Fn + 1 -> F1 Fn + 2 -> F2 ... Fn + 12 -> F12
Question: is it ac/dc
Answer: It is vivid color yellow on the black version of RK61.

    User questions & answers

Question: i need to know what soft wear program i need to make to work on lap top
Answer: I have used both Audiicity and WavePad by NCH software. Both are free downloads, WavePad has somwhat better documentation/Help and can be upgraded to some pretty serious sofware.
Question: What is the width of this
Answer: The width is 17" X depth 10 3/4" X height 5 3/4" (including air space of circular coasters)
Question: Does this have a "seek" function? I want to FF thru blank sections & stop at any audio on the tape. I'm archiving amateur cassettes w/o track info
Answer: Unfortunately, this tape deck model doesn't have the seek function. I've seen Sony tape decks have that feature. Try a Goodwill or a Salvation Army store to purchase a used Sony tape deck. Good Luck Mary.
Question: Does this unit record stereo (2 channel) MP3s from stereo cassettes, using Audacity as the sound program
Answer: Windows controls whether you get mono (in "both" channels) or stereo. With the deck connected via USB, open Control Panel, Sound, pick your input, and set Windows to use 44.1kHz sampling 16-bit 2 channels. (USB defaults to 1 channel, but this is where you change it.)

    User questions & answers

Question: Does this have a jack for headphones
Answer: Yes, there IS a headphone jack -- it is on the rear of the boombox. It also has a "Music Port". To use the Music Port you need a cord from whatever external music device you may have. The cord must have a stereo plug which fits your external device's headphone jack _AND_ another 3.5mm stereo plug, at the other end, which plugs into the Music Port. That way you can play music from your external device through the sprakers of the Panasonic boombox.
Question: does it have an sd card slot
Answer: No on-board SD...but, it is super easy to buy an SD or MicroSD to USB converter. They are usually under $5. Good idea!
Question: FM reception is not good. There is a single screw on the back for an additional antenna, but a dipole antenna needs 2 screws. Any suggestions
Answer: Tuner must be set to US step increments. Factory default is set for European standard:For any purchasers who may have misplaced the manual: Page 6 AM allocation setting:This system can also receive AM broadcasts allocated in 10 kHz steps. To change the step from 9 kHz to 10 kHz1 Press and hold FM/AM.After a few seconds the display changes to a flashing display of the current minimum frequency.2 Continue to hold down FM/AM.* When the minimum frequency changes, release the button. User questions & answers

Question: can I plug this into my computer
Answer: When recording a mono player to a your computer, use a mono to mono 3.5mm (1/8") phone cable. This will allow you to record the single audio channel from the cassette recorder to the computer's stereo with the same signal for both the left and right channels. You should also be able to set the recording software to record in mono.
Question: Want to purchase a recorder for my elderly father to tape his memoirs. Would this be a good find
Answer: Yes. This recorder is NOT THE BEST, BUT CERTAINLY NOT THE WORST. I got it for Taping Music. I am a Musician and Singer and it DOES NOT DO WELL FOR THAT, BUT. For Talking, Yes. It would be good. One tip. Don't hold the Microphone too close to your mouth, It will blur when you record. Hold it a few inches away and it will be fine. Talking records much better than singing, or music. So if you want it for that, Yes. And the price is good, and you can use Battries or the Outlet. Hope this helps. Annie/ Houston, Tx
Question: is it eletric & battery
Answer: Yes. Runs on both AC and battery.
Question: Could I plug my phone into the mic jack and then record some songs from phone to a cassette
Answer: Not easily, no. The mic jack on this recorder is mono only. So a standard 3.5mm stereo cable won't do the trick. You would need a 3.5mm stereo to 3.5mm mono cable (or adapter). The resulting audio, of course, will be in mono only. Also, the recording head on this cassette recorder is very, very poor. I wanted to record audio for my truck and the quality was just way to low for music. It is really better suited for voice recording.

    User questions & answers

Question: does this have wired wired remote start and stop
Answer: No, the usb cable is just for power.
Question: Does it have an input for a microphone
Answer: In Dec2020, with my black model, it works with ferric and chrome type tapes, and technically plays metal but sounds a bit “off”. Hard to describe and many average users may not notice this at all, but for a cheap cassette player - this works
Question: does this record audio and store lots? i usually record my audio keyboard playimg with my phone but im out of storage now. It would be nice
Answer: No, I do not have cleaners. The player eats batteries like popcorn. Batteries only last for 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Have to take the batteries out after a half hour use and put back when ready to use again or the batteries go dead. Not a good buy.
Question: Is it possible to record from computer directly without holding up a mic to a speaker? is there direct line in recording, to go from mp3 to cassette
Answer: Full size cassette not the micro type.

    User questions & answers

Question: Can i move audio tapes direclty to computer using aux output and not usb
Answer: No, it can only help you convert the tape to MP3 files and save them to USB drive directly, not to PC. You need to transfer them from USB drive to PC then.
Question: Hi, can I record external audio source directly to the cassette tape? Thank you
Answer: Dear customer, Our product can convert your cassette tape to MP3 file, and also can work as the cassette tape player. But it can not record the external audio music to your cassette tape, it is not a recorder. If you have any question while using it, please don't hesitate to contact us, we will do our best to help.
Question: What causes a"thumping" sound when in recording mode and is transferred to a flash drive
Answer: Dear, thanks for choosing us. Usually, It's the flash drive that's not compatible with the machine. Would you mind please trying to reformat your USB drive to FAT32 mode, then please try to record again. Thanks
Question: what size cassettes are compatible
Answer: Just regular size cassettes like from 1985. Not the tiny ones from answering machines.
