14 best drive turntable with cartridges

Drive turntables with cartridges are part of the home audio and electronics industry, particularly in the realm of vinyl record playback. A turntable, also known as a record player, is a device used to play vinyl records. The cartridge is a crucial component of the turntable responsible for reading the grooves on the vinyl record and converting them into an audio signal. Here's what you need to know about Drive turntables with cartridges:

  1. Drive Turntables: Drive is a brand known for producing turntables that cater to audiophiles and music enthusiasts. Drive turntables are designed to offer high-quality audio playback and often feature various technologies and innovations to improve sound quality and performance.

  2. Cartridges: The cartridge is a critical part of the turntable's tonearm. It typically contains a stylus (needle) that tracks the grooves on the vinyl record and generates an electrical signal, which is then amplified and sent to speakers for playback. Cartridges come in various types, including moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC), each with its own characteristics and sound quality.

  3. Sound Quality: Drive turntables, when paired with a high-quality cartridge, can provide excellent sound quality and reproduce the nuances of analog music recordings. The choice of cartridge can significantly impact the overall audio experience, as it determines the accuracy and fidelity of the playback.

  4. Turntable Features: Drive turntables may offer features such as adjustable tonearms, anti-vibration technology, and speed control to ensure accurate and stable playback. Some models may also have built-in phono preamps for easy integration with modern audio systems.

  5. Maintenance: Proper maintenance of both the turntable and cartridge is essential for optimal performance and longevity. This includes regular cleaning of the stylus, ensuring correct tracking force, and keeping the turntable's components in good condition.

  6. Compatibility: When considering a cartridge for a Drive turntable, it's crucial to check compatibility with the turntable model. Not all cartridges are suitable for all turntables, so it's essential to select one that works well with your specific setup.

  7. Accessories: Drive and other turntable manufacturers often offer a range of accessories, including replacement styli, headshells, and alignment tools, to help users maintain and upgrade their turntables.

Drive turntables with cartridges are popular among vinyl enthusiasts who appreciate the warm and authentic sound of analog records. When choosing a Drive turntable and cartridge combination, it's essential to consider your budget, the type of music you listen to, and your overall audio setup to ensure a satisfying listening experience.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the phono signal bypass the preamp circuitry completely when disengaged or is there some coloring of the sound even when bypassed? Thank you
Answer: While I can't give you the definitive technical answer you are looking for, I can tell you I have it set up next to an old school Sanyo semi auto playing through a top of the line Onkyo pre-amp, DH500 mosfet amp, and new top of the line JBL tower speakers I just got to replace 40 year old Ohm Walsh 4's. Sound is as clear as the older turntable; I'd attribute any difference in the color of the sound to the cartridge; which can be upgraded. I checked out many turntables before I bought; and this seemed to be the best available unless you want to step up to a manual model. I'm happy with the purchase so far.
Question: What are the actual dimmesions on the audio techna lp3bk
Answer: 17long,14w,4@3quarters high. bob
Question: Anybody experiencing problems with the speed varying
Answer: Yes, after the turntable was used for a month or so, I noticed the speed was a bit high... most noticeable on familiar records. I looked into how the speed can be adjusted on the bottom of the turntable... a fine adjustment that must be done with care, jewelers screwdriver and a speed checker. I used a free App called RPM on my iPhoneSE After carefully adjusting 2 or 3 times, the turntable has not needed further adjustment for about a year. I think it just needed a break in period for the belt drive and bearings. I hope this info is helpful.
Question: If you manually cue, does it auto return
Answer: If you manually place the arm on the record when it reaches the end of the record the auto return will activate and the arm return to its resting place and shut off.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I load my albums into itunes
Answer: You bet --- once you digitize your albums and have them in MP3 format, you can import the into iTunes as you would any other music.
Question: Can I play a record to my computer and burn a cd, also does the software come with this unit. Thankyou
Answer: Once you've transferred the vinal to digital you can burn a cd or use it the way any digital items are used. The software is a separate FREE download. The instructions are included.
Question: Will I be able to transfer music to my iTunes library
Answer: Richard, generally, as I understand it, yes. You will be able to record your records to your PC hard drive. From there, you can convert your music files to whatever formats you prefer. For iTunes, I believe you can import them into iTunes and iTunes will automatically convert them to iTunes format as you import them. If there is a more direct method to record them to iTunes, I'm not aware of it. Hope this helps! Skip
Question: My husband just received this turntable as a Christmas gift. Any recommendations for a receiver that is compatible? Our old receiver is broken
Answer: Basically any receiver/amp will work with this unit as long as the inputs are RCA jacks and that's pretty much all of them. Here's how it breaks down. All turntables require a pre-amp before the signal goes to the main amplifier. Most modern receivers do not have a dedicated slot for turntables any longer. So most turntables include the pre-amp built in. The switch for the pre-amp is on the back of the Audio Technica.* So if your receiver has a setting for "Phonograph", "Phono" or "Turntable" you're good to go. Just switch the pre-amp Off on the back of the turntable.* If your receiver doesn't have a setting for "Phonograph", or one of the a fore mentioned, then turn the switch On. That's it. Simple. Just be aware that should you buy a receiver without a "Phonograph" input you will loose the slot for whatever peripheral should go there. In my case I use an Onkyo CR-315 Shelf Unit. I plug my Audio Tecnica into the "Dock" slot. This is to be used with a special docking device that allows you to plug in an iPod. I know longer have this device, so no harm no fowl. If however I did have this device and needed to use it, I would constantly be switching between these two devices on my receiver. So just make sure you have enough inputs to avoid this potential hassle.Really, the only thing you need to look for on a receiver is to make sure it excepts inputs through RCA jacks and again, that's pretty much the standard. As to brand, that's up to you as far as your needs and budget.
Question: Any recommendations for speakers i can hook directly into the rca jack? i want something with great sound that is similar to a portable speaker
Answer: Hi, Mine speakers' sound is great. you can buy with the link:https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Udreamer+Bookshelf+Speaker&me=A20PPATB6ITV8T&ref=nb_sb_noss&field-asin=B07XMND1QS
Question: Is there any way to tell if it is recording? i have tried fat32 usbs (as cust svc indicated) and an sd card-nothing. i don't know if it is recording
Answer: I wondered the same thing. I haven't used it lately, but I remember a blinking icon when it was recording. I'll set mine up and look again.
Question: does this convert cassette to mp3 files
Answer: Hi, it could convert cassette tape to mp3 file.
Question: can you record from the tape
Answer: Yes, you can play your favorite cassettes and record them to a USB/FlashDrive. Note, if you want to have separate tracks, you will need to press record before and after each song; otherwise you will just have 1 long track that includes all songs on one side of the tape. Hopefully that answers your question! You can do the same to record to flashdrive from the radio or vinyl record. I have not tried recording from bluetooth or AUX to a flashdrive, but I imagine the process would be about the same.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come pre-mounted
Answer: It's the stylus and cartridge. You are going to need to mount it on your turntable arm and rebalance.
Question: Will this fit a teac-400s
Answer: The 400-S came with an AT100e, which is essentially the same thing. If you still have the cartridge the teac came with and need a new stylus, you can still get them. I have the same table and love it!
Question: Has anyone auditioned this cartridge alongside an Ortofon Red
Answer: In my experience the Ortofon Red tracks better than the VM520EB. In terms of audio quality they are about the same.
Question: Will this plug and play in the audio technica lp
Answer: Not quite plug & play. The cartridge needs to be disconnected from the headshell supplied and then installed on the headshell that comes with the LP-120. Not hard to do as long as you are careful with the 4 wires connecting the cartridge to the headshell. There's probably a YouTube video showing how. Note that once a transfer is made, you will need to recalibrate the weight and anti-skating of the arm.

Product features

Audio-Technica VM520EB

The VM520EB is part of the 500 Series in Audio-Technica’s new VM cartridge line – a line that harks back to A-T’s early days as a manufacturer primarily of high-end phono cartridges, while also incorporating today’s advanced technology. Like all VM cartridges, the VM520EB is equipped with dual magnets that are positioned to match the left and right channels in the stereo record groove for outstanding channel separation and extended frequency response. The cartridge’s 0.3 x 0.7 mil elliptical bonded stylus tracks the record groove with high accuracy for outstanding audio reproduction. Includes mounting hardware.

Para-toroidal coils improve generating efficiency and offers superb linearity, since leakage of magnetic flux in this continuous and unitized magnetic circuit is low. Permeability of the cores is also optimized through the use of laminated cores.

A permalloy center shield plate enables the effective separation of left and right channels, suppressing electrical crosstalk to below 40dB. This is similar to the actual crosstalk value found in the grooves of the record itself.

A-T’s Dual Magnet Design Replicates the Structure of the Cutter Head

Instead of using a single, large magnet, the two magnets are arranged in the shape of a 'V'. The two magnets are positioned precisely to match the positions of the left and right channels in the stereo groove walls. Consequently, the VM design ensures outstanding channel separation, extended frequency response and superb tracking.

Elliptical Bonded Stylus

Elliptical diamond stylus follows the groove modulation with greater precision compared to a conical stylus, offering improved frequency and phase responses whilst reducing distortion.

500 Series

Standard cartridge body fitted with the para-toroidal coils, center shield plate, and 6N-OFC coil wire which is the same as 700 series.

Replacement & Upgrade Styli

The cartridge becomes worn after an extended period of play, even the finest diamond stylus. Our VM cartridges can be used again for a long time only by replacing the stylus. Our renewed VM cartridges have 7 styli and 3 types of bodies. Not only it is not necessary to buy the cartridge itself, but also you experience the enjoyment of upgrade or various combination of VM cartridges.

Answer: Dan, I purchased the Shure M97xE High-Performance Magnetic Phono Cartridge in 2013. I'm not disappointed. I do a lot of album & 45 transfers, as well as just enjoy putting an album on while working in my shop. I tried others but to my ear this cartridge provided the best reproduction of instruments and voice. I would recommend also getting a Shure SFG-2 Stylus Tracking Force Gauge so you can set the weight up correctly. For $25 the gauge will payback in stylus costs and wear on the media. The cartridge was $70, but I felt it was better than some I tried which were in the hundreds of dollars. - Fred
Question: What type of stylus does it use
Answer: It takes a 1/2" *cartridge*, which in turn will hold/come with the matching stylus for the cartridge of your choice (as long as you get a 1/2" mount type cartridge).
Question: Is the Audio-Technica HS1 Headshell compatible with a AT-95E cartridge
Answer: Yes, it is. The at-lp120 turntable comes with this array.

Product description

Whether you’re just getting into records, rediscovering a record collection long since buried away or simply adding a turntable to complete your system, the AT-LP60X fully automatic belt-drive turntable is an excellent choice. This affordable, easy-to-use turntable plays both 33-1/3 and 45 RPM records and, with its built-in switchable phonon preamp, can be connected directly to your home stereo, powered speakers, computer and other components, whether they have a dedicated phonon input or not. An update of the popular AT-LP60, the ATLP60X features a redesigned tone arm base and head shell to improve tracking and reduce resonance. Noise is further reduced by the inclusion of an AC adapter that moves the AC/DC conVersion outside of the chassis where its impact on the signal chain is limited. Audio-Technical has been a leader in phonon cartridge design for more than 50 years, and that expertise shows in the AT-LP60X’s Dual Magnet cartridge with replaceable stylus. The cartridge is integrated into the head shell for assured performance and ease of setup. The turntable comes with a detachable RCA output cable (3. 5 mm male to dual RCA male), 45 RPM adapter, and a removable hinged dust cover. It is available in black (AT-LP60X-BK), brown/black (AT-LP60X-BW), gunmetal/black (AT-LP60X-GM), and red/black (AT-LP60X-RD).

  • Experience the high fidelity audio of vinyl
  • Fully automatic belt drive turntable operation with 2 speeds: 33 1/3, 45 RPM
  • Anti resonance, die cast aluminum platter
  • Redesigned tone arm base and head shell for improved tracking and reduced resonance
  • Ac adapter handles AC/DC conversion outside of the chassis, reducing noise in the signal chain

User questions & answers

Question: Does this turntable need speakers to play the record
Answer: Yes. Needs an amp and speakers.
Question: What are the differences between this at-lp60x and the regular at-lp60? this one https://www.amazon.com/audio-technica-at-lp60-automatic-belt-drive-tu
Answer: Lp60x is the newer model.. there are some aesthetic changes, DC conversation happens in the plug now, the o/p is a 3.5mm aux jack with a aux to rca cable(instead od the other way around in 60) that's what I found when I was researching on it. There might be some internal changes too
Question: Do you needle for this product
Answer: The need comes with the product. I bought this as a gift for my mother.
Question: What does ‘fully automatic’ mean exactly
Answer: A fully automatic turntable will queue and play the record itself with the push of one button as well as return the tonearm on it's own once the record is finished playing.

User questions & answers

Question: Hi, i recently ordered this turntable and found that it does not work with my sonos connect. could you please tell me which one i need
Answer: Thanks very much for your question. To use a turntable with your CONNECT, you will need a turntable with a built-in preamplifier (sometimes called the "phono stage"). Pro-ject has several options with built-in phono preamplifiers. World Wide Stereo is 38 years old and a proud Pro-ject dealer.
Question: The company site says that this product has Bluetooth capability. Is that true
Answer: This pro-ject essential III model does not. You need the model that's named "pro-ject essential III bluetooth".
Question: Can someone tell me whether the plastic dust cover is removable
Answer: Yes. It just slides over two metal posts and can be removed in seconds.
Question: Can you plug this directly into speakers
Answer: No, this turntable doesn't have a built in pre-amp. You will need one of the following combinations to use it: a pre-amp with powered speakers, a receiver with phono input and passive speakers, or a receiver without phono input and a pre-amp and passive speakers. It is an excellent turntable, but you're paying for quality over convenience. I have an inexpensive Pyle pre-amp hooked to a Yamaha receiver.

Audio-Technica AT33PTG/2 Dual Moving Coil Turntable Cartridge

Based on 44 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The AT33PTG/II dual moving coil cartridge features a Micro linear stylus that, with its small curvature radius, delivers low-distortion, high-range performance, even when playing the inner circumference of a record. The Micro linear stylus, which has an average life span of around 1, 000 hours, is mounted on a nude tapered boron cantilever with a double damper for reduced weight and better audio quality. The cartridge’s two coils provide excellent channel separation and are affixed within a strong, lightweight mold made of hard resin to greatly reduce unwanted vibration. The cartridge uses a neodymium magnet and a permendur yoke for dramatically enhanced magnetic energy. The PCOCC (Pure Copper by OH no Continuous Casting) coils ensure pure audio transmission.

  • Moving coil cartridge with Microlinear stylus delivers exquisite, full-range audio reproduction
  • Advanced tapered boron cantilever and reduced coil weight improve the audio quality, particularly in the higher frequencies
  • Neodymium magnet and permendur yoke dramatically enhance the magnetic energy
  • PCOCC (Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting) coil enables pure signal transfer
  • High-separation, wide-response dual moving coil

User questions & answers

Question: Is the AT33PTG/II considered a "low output" cart
Answer: Yes exactly two labels of 5 1/2 each makes it an 11 inch long and a 8 1/2 inch wide paper
Question: Is the stylus replaceable? What do you do when it wears out
Answer: It is 100 pages to a pack - so 200 labels
Question: The needle of this set is replaceable
Answer: they are two per sheet. the only reason why I had to cut is because when I printed out a label it printed out small
Question: Can this cartridge play 45 or 78 rpms or should i switch cartridges if i have to play those speeds
Answer: I have discovered copy and pasting just the label into a blank Microsoft Word page and then printing prints it perfect in the top label of the Avery 8126 shipping labels.

Audio-Technica AT33PTG/II

This model succeeds in thinning down and shortening the cantilever, compared to the AT33PTG. The coil impedance is also refined from 17W to 10W. We realized significant weight reduction of the vibration system and successfully improved the basic performance and sound quality of the cartridge.

High performance and long-life Microlinear stylus

Microlinear (ML) is a specially polished line contact stylus. This has better high range performance than the conical or elliptical stylus due to its small curvature radius and realizes low distortion and expanding high range reproduction even when playing at the inner circumference of records. And the constancy of the line contact shape is one of its main features with an average product lifetime of around 1000 hours.

User questions & answers

Question: will arm return at end of album
Answer: no
Question: Do I need speakers for this item
Answer: You will need speakers and an amplifier or receiver.
Question: is this fully analog or does it convert to digital
Answer: Fully analog.
Question: What are the differences between this and the LP120X
Answer: The main differences are the MDF 40WN vs plastic plinth 120x, belt drive 40WN vs direct drive 120x, and the carbon fiber upgraded tone arm of the 40WN vs a low end tone arm 120x. Also theres no mention of there being a speed monitoring system for the motor of the 120x. The 120x has a plinth mounted led and a USB output that the 40WN doesn't if that's important. To sum it all up if your aim is to listen to records casually, you dont really care about the hifi, and you have no interest in upgrading the stylus cartridge then the 120x isnt a bad choice. Yes the 120x has the VM cartridges just the same as the 40WN but the tone arm of the 120x would need to be upgraded to really benefit from the change of the cartridge. Also you run into the possible motor vibration issues of direct drive that can affect the sound vs a usually preferred belt drive which isolates the turntable from the motor vibration. My opinion is to spend the extra $ and get the better turntable, the 40WN is much better looking to my taste as well.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I plug this turntable into powered speakers and have sound or do I need a receiver
Answer: You can use it in both ways.
Question: I have always owned belt drive turntables. I have read that direct drive can be noisy. How is this one as far as rumble
Answer: My previous turntable was a very nice AR belt drive table, and I had the same concern about direct drive rumble. Not any more. The AT-LP120XUSB is dead silent. It sounds incredible.
Question: So, since this turntable has a built in preamp, does this mean I can use passive speakers? Or do I need powered speakers
Answer: No. You'll need powered speakers or you'll need to plug it into an amp to use passive speakers. "Preamp" = pre (before) amplifier. Preamps and phono amps take the very low signal from the stylus and amplify it to a level that an amplifier can use. AND (the reason record players need phono-specific preamps instead of a standard preamp) the preamp/phonoamp also decodes the RIAA format that all albums since the 1950s use, which is proprietary and needs a specific type of decoding to play the music.
Question: Ok,..in plain english,...can i plug this tt into external speakers? that's all i want it for. if yes,...what type of speakers
Answer: Yes you can... The turntable has a built-in preamp. You want to buy powered speakers. They sell tons of them now. The best I have heard were KRK powered speakers. To get a good idea of what’s available, check out the needledoctor or crutchfield websites.
