Mid-sized speakers are usually too small to fit on a bookshelf, but placing them on the floor can cause problems with sound quality. For one thing, the drivers are not at the same height as your ears, which means that your ears are not in the center of the cone of sound produced by typical cone drivers (ribbon tweeters are an entirely different matter).
Another problem is that woofer is so close to the ground that almost half of the sound cone is directed into the floor, where it either gets muffled by carpeting or brightened by a non-carpeted surface. This can cause a muddy bass response that lacks the punch and tightness that it should produce.
These stands solve the problem by lifting the base of your speakers to a point about 23.6" above the floor, thereby lifting the speaker cones to a point much nearer your ears when in a seated listening position. It also gives the woofer a chance to "breath" and expand before it gets reflected and attenuated by the floor. The result is a much tighter bass response coupled with improved clarity across the frequency spectrum.
These stands are constructed on tempered glass with aluminum vertical supports. They support up to 22 lbs. (10 kg) weight and are 23.6" tall. The lower glass plate is 0.5" (12mm) thick and measures 11.8" x 9.8" (300 x 250 mm), while the lower plate is 0.24" (6mm) thick and measures 9.8" x 7.9" (250 x 200 mm). If you have larger and/or heavier speakers, top-heaviness/tipping would be the main worry. I modified these stands by closing up the hole and spaces at the bottom where the main tube meets the bottom plate, and then filled that larger post with sand. Use some Blu Tack to secure the speakers to the stands after this, and you should have no problems!- Kyle |

| Answer: | Not across the entire bottom. At the front and back there are flat metal stripe that are threaded through for carpet spikes. You can buy discs that are designed to be used with the carpet spike that will protect your hardwood floor. |

| Answer: | The bottom plate is steel, like the rest of the stands. The material is not as thick as it looks, it is thin steel sheet with reinforcements for the spikes (or feet) to screw into. These stands are sturdy and have worked well for me. |
| Question: | Does the length indicated include the height of the spikes? For instance with the 24" stand, does that include the spike or do the spikes add height |
| Answer: | The spikes add 1 1/4 inches to the stand. This shouldn't make a significant difference in how your speakers sound on the stands if you order the best size for your speakers. The goal is to get your tweeters at or slightly above your ear height at your listening position, so get out your tape measure. I was pleased to hear the improvement that the stands brought to speakers I have been listening to for over 20 years. Excellent product! |

| Answer: | Yes if you are on a solid surface like a concrete floor you do not need to install the spikes. They are for a soft floor. I have mine on a soft flooring with no spikes and the weight of my speakers and the stands themselves are plenty. Also if you are wanting to lesson harmonics if the case you would be adding more weight in sand or shot material also. Hope that helps. |
