12 best phono usb preamps
A phono USB preamp, also known as a phono stage or phono preamplifier, is an essential component in a vinyl record playback system. It serves the purpose of boosting the low-level audio signal from a turntable's cartridge to a level suitable for input into a standard line-level input on an audio receiver, amplifier, or a computer via USB. Here are some key points about phono USB preamps:
Purpose: Phono preamps are necessary because vinyl records store audio in a unique way. The signal from a turntable's cartridge is much weaker than the standard line-level signals produced by CD players, digital sources, or other audio devices. A phono preamp amplifies this weak signal and applies the RIAA equalization curve to restore the audio to its original form.
Connection Options: Phono preamps typically offer both analog and digital connectivity options. The USB port allows for a direct connection to a computer, making it possible to digitize your vinyl records and transfer them to digital formats like MP3 or FLAC.
Compatibility: Phono USB preamps are compatible with a wide range of turntables and audio systems. They can be used with both moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) cartridges, provided that the preamp has the appropriate input settings.
USB Recording: When connected to a computer via USB, a phono USB preamp can be used for recording vinyl records, allowing you to create digital copies of your vinyl collection. Software applications on your computer can capture the audio signal and convert it into digital files.
Phono Preamp vs. Integrated Amplifiers: Many modern audio receivers and amplifiers do not include a built-in phono preamp, so a separate phono preamp is required when using a turntable. However, some integrated amplifiers and receivers do have a phono input, eliminating the need for an external preamp.
Sound Quality: The quality of a phono USB preamp can significantly affect the sound quality of your vinyl playback and digitization. Higher-end models often offer superior sound reproduction and lower noise levels.
Adjustable Settings: Some phono preamps provide adjustable settings for cartridge type (MM or MC), gain, and impedance. These settings allow you to fine-tune the preamp to match your specific turntable and cartridge combination.
Price Range: Phono USB preamps are available in a wide price range, from budget-friendly options to high-end audiophile models. The choice often depends on your budget and the level of audio quality you desire.
In summary, a phono USB preamp is a critical component for vinyl enthusiasts who want to enjoy their records through modern audio systems or digitize their vinyl collections. It amplifies the weak signal from a turntable's cartridge, applies the necessary equalization, and can connect to various devices, including computers, for recording and playback. The choice of a phono preamp should align with your specific turntable setup and audio preferences.

User questions & answers
Question: | is the power supply autovolts (110-220V |
Answer: | The power supply we provided is for the USA market only, you could use the 220V adaptor as long as is DC 9V / 150mA spec. |
Question: | Can audio from a connected analog turntable be sent directly to my home theater pre-amp via the optical output |
Answer: | You can connect the analog turntable between UA2D and home theater preamp directly via the RCA connector, not the optical. |
Question: | What size is the headphone input quarter inch or stereo mini |
Answer: | 3.5mm (mini) headphone jack |
Question: | How many ohms does this preamp power? Also, will connecting this to an amp be better |
Answer: | This is pre-amp, so it cannot power speakers. Ohms are not relevant in that sense. It probably can power many headphones from the monitor jack on the front, but volume may be limited. Also can drive powered speakers that have their own internal power amplifiers from the RCA outputs on the back. Yes, you definitely need a power amp to drive non-powered speakers. Now, the amp can be a standalone basic or integrated into another device such as a receiver, or as I indicated, powered speakers. But don't let that fool you. You need an amp somewhere in the system, and this is not one since it is a pre-amp. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have powered speakers (can connect via rca) and am interested in adding a powered subwoofer. can i plug that sub directly into the 3.5m jack |

Answer: | The Kanto TUK are sold as a pair. |
Question: | How long is the power cord for the Mini |
Answer: | just one cable on the LFE out to one in on the sub. The sub is mono and will sum the two inputs to one internally, so it will be fine. |
Question: | Is there a replacement power cord available |
Answer: | Power supply was included |

Question: | my desirable configuration is: ATPL120 turntable output to preamp and from preamp to Sony TMR-RF970R headphones. Can I have enogh strong signal |
Answer: | if it is an audio technica atpl120, then it already has a phono preamp, so if you hook it up to a stereo or headphones, you should be hearing it in full volume control. so I would think just hooking it up to your headphones will give you full volume.1980s or older turntables don't have a preamp so they relied on specially revamped phono audio hookups, but yours already is preamped so you don not need any addition preamp devices. |
Question: | My amplifier has no "aux" input. Will the pre-amp boost the signal from a turntable to a cd input |
Answer: | This pre-amp boosts any signal. How you connect it to the AMP doesn't matter. AUX or PHONO is only important if the pre-amp is inside the amp. |
Question: | I have an Audio Technica AT-LP60 and Lepai LP-2020A+ Tripath TA2020 Class-T Hi-Fi Audio Amplifier with Power Supply, would I still need a preamp |
Answer: | You can simple test your amplifier by connecting the audio output from the turntable to your power amp and see if you can control the sound volume. I suspect that you might not get any sound from the power amp even at max output power. Then you need the pre-amp to boost the signal from the turntable before connecting it to the power amp. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Does the unit work with moving coil or moving magnet cartridges? (mm vs mc |
Answer: | This preamp is for moving magnet cartridges |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I plug this turntable into powered speakers and have sound or do I need a receiver |
Answer: | You can use it in both ways. |
Question: | I have always owned belt drive turntables. I have read that direct drive can be noisy. How is this one as far as rumble |
Answer: | My previous turntable was a very nice AR belt drive table, and I had the same concern about direct drive rumble. Not any more. The AT-LP120XUSB is dead silent. It sounds incredible. |
Question: | So, since this turntable has a built in preamp, does this mean I can use passive speakers? Or do I need powered speakers |
Answer: | No. You'll need powered speakers or you'll need to plug it into an amp to use passive speakers. "Preamp" = pre (before) amplifier. Preamps and phono amps take the very low signal from the stylus and amplify it to a level that an amplifier can use. AND (the reason record players need phono-specific preamps instead of a standard preamp) the preamp/phonoamp also decodes the RIAA format that all albums since the 1950s use, which is proprietary and needs a specific type of decoding to play the music. |
Question: | Ok,..in plain english,...can i plug this tt into external speakers? that's all i want it for. if yes,...what type of speakers |
Answer: | Yes you can... The turntable has a built-in preamp. You want to buy powered speakers. They sell tons of them now. The best I have heard were KRK powered speakers. To get a good idea of what’s available, check out the needledoctor or crutchfield websites. |

Product description
Description of PPA50: Top quality low noise preamp: The main job of a pre-amp is to control the signal going to your amp or powered speakers. They are the first part of your signal and a good pre-amp is essential to having great sound quality. Having a separate pre-amp that specializes in that one job will give you better sound quality than an all in one receiver or integrated amplifier. Inputs and Outputs: What makes our model different from some of the standard ones on the market is that we carefully chose the inputs and outputs. We have RCA aux inputs that will support any audio device. We also have a Phono RCA to support turntables. There are ¼” inputs that can be run in stereo for any pro audio devices. There is also a front combo jack with selectable mic/line. The mic preamp is extremely low noise. Recording interface: Yea, we did it. We added a USB computer interface! Yes, this will work with any of your favorite DAW’s such as pro tools or Ableton live. You can record the final mix into one stereo channel in pro tools or any other DAW. Anything being played through the pre-amp will be recorded including the microphone inputs, as well as any source you are playing. It will be summed to one stereo channel in your DAW. You can also use Ableton live or any other software to play music as an input device on the preamp. The interface is 2-way and you can use it as an input playback device or as an output recording device. Bluetooth and USB playback: We wanted to make this product extremely versatile, so we added Bluetooth audio playback. This is perfect for home audio use as well as for some pro audio applications in between sets etc. There is also USB playback so you can play back audio saved on a thumb drive. Amazing controls: There is a high quality 3 band EQ so you can adjust and fine tune your sound. There are bass, mid, and treble controls. Also, we added a low-cut crossover which is great if you will be using a subwoofer.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the hissing noise i read about in reviews a common experience for those who bought the ppa |
Answer: | While this is a "budget" preamp more geared to sound reinforcement than high-end Hi-Fi, it does a fine job in most categories as long as you feed it an adequate level of signal input. I have not used the phono section so I cannot speak to that. However, the line level inputs, mic input, mp3 Bluetooth and mp3 USB Thumb Drive all work well without a distracting noise level. If you try to use a low-level input signal that causes you to turn the appropriate gain control or Master Volume control up full then you can expect a modest amount of hiss that will be heard during low or silent passages. For example, don't try using a low-output "ribbon" microphone and expect good performance without a separate microphone preamp ahead of this unit. Over all, I find these preamps quite usable. I own 4 of these units and they all have worked well and identically for my applications. |
Question: | Bluetooth |
Answer: | No, and I don't own this anymore because it arrived broken, bent and was junk. Returned it. |
Question: | Can this be used with a Rockville tube amplifier |
Answer: | I don't see why not! |
Question: | Hows the Bluetooth on it? Does it have bluetooth |
Answer: | It does have Bluetooth. Decent product however more for home studio use. I’d gave it a B- |
