10 best 12ax7 phono preamps
A 12AX7 phono preamp is a specialized electronic device used in audio systems to amplify the signal from a turntable's phono cartridge. These preamps are designed to work with vinyl record players, which produce a lower-level signal than other audio sources, such as CD players or digital audio players. Here's what you need to know about 12AX7 phono preamps:
Vacuum Tube Design: The 12AX7 is a common type of vacuum tube used in the design of phono preamps. Vacuum tubes are known for their warm and vintage sound characteristics, making them popular among audiophiles who appreciate the analog sound of vinyl records.
Signal Amplification: Phono preamps are necessary because the output signal from a turntable's cartridge is very weak, and it also has an equalization curve applied during the recording process. The phono preamp amplifies this signal and applies the correct RIAA equalization to restore it to its original audio quality.
Compatibility: 12AX7 phono preamps are compatible with a wide range of turntables and cartridges, making them a versatile choice for vinyl enthusiasts.
Input and Output: These preamps typically have RCA input jacks to connect to the turntable and RCA output jacks to connect to an amplifier or receiver. Some models also offer balanced XLR outputs.
Gain Adjustment: Many 12AX7 phono preamps allow users to adjust the gain or amplification level to match the specific cartridge's output and the overall audio system setup. This ensures optimal sound quality without distortion.
Tube Rolling: Some audiophiles enjoy "tube rolling," which involves swapping out the 12AX7 vacuum tube with other compatible tubes to experiment with different tonal characteristics. This can be a way to fine-tune the sound to personal preferences.
Sound Quality: The use of vacuum tubes in phono preamps can impart a warm and rich sound quality that many audiophiles find appealing. This characteristic complements the analog nature of vinyl records and can add a unique flavor to the music.
Price Range: 12AX7 phono preamps are available in various price ranges, with entry-level models for budget-conscious consumers and high-end options for audiophiles seeking top-tier sound quality.
Setup: Installing a 12AX7 phono preamp in your audio system typically involves connecting it between your turntable and amplifier or receiver. It's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions and ensure proper grounding for optimal performance.
Maintenance: Vacuum tubes have a limited lifespan and may need replacement over time.Regular maintenance and care are essential to keep the preamp functioning correctly.
In summary, a 12AX7 phono preamp is an essential component for vinyl enthusiasts looking to enjoy the warm and classic sound of records. It amplifies the weak signal from a turntable's cartridge and applies the necessary equalization, making it a valuable addition to any home audio system focused on vinyl playback.

Q&A:
Q: I got a loud hum with T11.
A: At first, we have to clarify that all phono preamps have a certain of background noise. It won't be loud, while a little loud is normal. Besides, there are many factors.
- Reason A: T11 isn't connected to ground well.
While the device is playing music, picking up the GND copper part of T11 with your fingers. If the background noise is much lower, then T11 isn’t connected to the ground. For this issue, we prepared a 3m wire in the package for you to solve it by yourself. Just use it to connect the GND with any large mental item in your home like windows or mental tables.
- Reason B: T11 doesn’t match with your amplifier well.
Digital amplifiers cannot be connected to the ground directly, which may cause T11 much noise. For this issue, you can just set the T11 GND switch (on the back of it) to OFF. However, this will lead to bad noise from T11 itself as it is not connected to the ground. You can only choose the bearable way. That’s why we recommend using professional pure HiFi amplifiers (no Bluetooth will be better).
- Reason C: The RCA wire has a poor quality.
A good RCA wire will be equipped with an anti-jamming magnetic ring, which can effectively reduce various interference.
- Little Bear T11 is a pure tube phono preamplifier working with MM cartridge turntables only. Please make sure your turntable is equipped with a PHONO signal output instead of a LINE output.
- Little Bear T11 is based on T10 with improvement. Compared to T10, T11 has lower background noise at normal volume. Its sound performance is better with increased liveness.
- Adopting a conventional active RIAA equalization phono stage circuit. There is 3 metal covers and 4 acrylic covers for those tubes. And you will be able to choose which type as you like.
- Supporting 6N2/12AX7 tubes, which offers many replaceable tubes for you like 6H2,6H2n (For 6N2 type) and 12AX7B,6N4(9PIN),ECC83,5751 (For 12AX7 type).
- On the bottom of the description, there is a few Q&A for buyers who might meet the humming problem. If you encounter a similar issue, please check those tips, which have covered most of conditions.

Question: | How easy is it to replace the tube sockets in this unit? Some were screwed up on receipt and I may have damaged others replacing tubes |
Answer: | Solid state, uses discrete components. Very neutral sounding and has a very open soundstage. |
Question: | How many dB of gain can it add to the input signal |
Answer: | I've no idea. I gave it away. It wasn't what I needed. It did work fine, but it didn't have a actual On/Off switch which was a bother. |
Question: | ax7 tubes are noted for a treble shrillness. is this noticeable on this unit? can the 12ax7 tubes be rolled to lower-gain 12at7 tubes |
Answer: | Yes, the RCA out on your tape deck will connect directly into the PA550 and the adjustable treble will give it more boost. |
Question: | Can you tell me what size is the pot shaft for the knobs on the front - if I wanted to order nee knobs. This would be the size opening on the backsid |
Answer: | Yes, plug your turntable into the PA550 phono input. Plug the output of the PA550 into the input of the SE560 then use the output of the SE560 to go to your amp or preamp. Works perfectly. When first set up, set the level controls of both units half way up. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this thing have an/off switch or do you need to plug/unplug everytime you use it |
Answer: | no switch. You can plug/unplug, I leave it plugged in all the time. |
Question: | Unit works fine for awhile and then starts outputting static, even with no input connected. I've tried it with several amps with the same results |
Answer: | Most likely people who are having noise problems it is because of ground loop isolation problem. If you have a ground loop isolation problem grounding the preamp box is unlikely to help. Without getting technical, what you want to buy is a ground loop isolator or a humm eliminator; both the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator tackles the cause of the noise at the fundamental source of the problem, depending on your audio setup, one maybe easier to use than the other. To use the ground loop isolator or the humm eliminator they generally come with instructions, or you can google this topic. If the noise in your audio system isn't fixed by using this solution the first time, try putting the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator at various points in your audio system. Also you can talk to audio people and get advice about how to fix ground loop problems from people who setup big audio systems, for concerts and such; if you talk to the average electronic garage shop audio enthusiast you are likely to get bad advice, i.e., meaningless explanations. Also caution must be used when Googling this topic, much of the discussion, advice and explanation on this topic is bogus, you can get a general correct feel of this topic if you read a number of explanations. Also one more thing that can cause a "popping noise" is that you have too much gain, this is a phono amp and the gain is huge, it takes a 3mV and makes it 2Vp-p this is a gain of around 100 to 200, if you gain up the audio signal too much then the signal out of your amplifier runs out of head room and clips, this can cause a popping sound, essentially you have too much gain. If this is occurring you need to either buy a preamp with less gain or attenuate the signal before it gets to the preamp. If this is a problem, too much gain, you can buy preamps with gain control. |
Question: | My turntable has very quiet output. Will this device help boost the volume |
Answer: | Yes, indeed. If your need was like mine (no built-in pre-amp on the turntable and no specifically dedicated phono input on your amplifier) you will find this unit to be the perfect solution to needed amplification of the turntable's output. Don't forget to hook up the ground wire as directed or you may wind up putting unwanted noise into the audio. |
Question: | My amp DOES have a Phono Input, but my cartridges are low output. Can I use this to boost the signal using the Phono Input to reduce audible hiss |
Answer: | No, you can't. This is a phono preamp with RIAA playback equalization that amplifies the signal about 100 times, so it essentially does what your built-in phono preamp does. The output signal from the separate preamp is equalized to a nominally "flat" frequency response and the amplified signal level will overload and probably damage your built-in phono preamp. Plug it into any other stereo line input on your system (AUX, CD, DVD, TAPE, VCR, etc.), but NOT the PHONO input! If you need higher signal gain, maybe look at phono preamps from ART or TCC that have output level controls. If you use moving-coil (MC) cartridges, you need a preamp specifically designed for them...they require at least 55 dB (over 500 times) signal gain vs. about 40 dB (100 times) for moving-magnet (MM) cartridges. Noise becomes a critical issue with MC cartridges because of their extremely low signal output, so good-quality cables and good turntable grounding are essential. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this preamp connect to my active speakers? or just connnect to power amplifier |
Answer: | Hi, This is a stereo preamplifier, you can connect it to the active speakers or power amplifier than to passive speakers. |
Question: | I have this hooked up to bookshelf speakers, sounds great, would i hear a noticable difference hooking it to a subwoofer |
Answer: | I currently use the Pre-Amp with a powered subwoofer amp, it works just fine. The P1 has frequency response down to 20hz, so adding a subwoofer may be worth your while. |
Question: | Can i hook this up to a 2 channel receiver? i have a pioneer sx-10ae |
Answer: | Yes you can if your receiver has output/input jacks for the Fosi to be in a "loop". If you do not have input/output jacks then you would be relegated to installing the Fosi to cd player or turntable or whatever component you are trying to acquire a bit of tube sound. I use mine to "soften "a bright metal tweeter in my speakers. Since I have separate components it was easy to install in my case. Also check to see if your receiver has "preamp" in/out jacks. This would also allow you to install the Fosi to have a effect on your receiver as well as any other components you have connected to it. A bit of research on your part will be required. |
Question: | Is there a recommended replacement tube |
Answer: | I replaced the stock ones with the Riverstone Audio 7-Pin GE JAN 5654W (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BFJDTW0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1). They are very nice tubes but do need about 20-25 hours of solid burn-in before they start to "warm up the sound" in my opinion. |

Question: | I have a set of pre/amp unison research c5pline/p30k.i would like to know the price of the set of 12ax7/ecc83(5pcs) & kt88matched(4pcs |
Answer: | When the warranty ends I will pop it open for the manufacturer but it is 16 bit /48khz. |
Question: | Is this item single or pair |
Answer: | Yes you can connect it . Once you have the nad pp4 you don't have to connect it to the phono of your equipment just in any jacket. |
Question: | Hi does anyone know how these tubes compare to the German made telefunken tubes? Thanks |
Answer: | Just as CD's are different from records your recordings won't have exactly the same signature as pure analogue. They will be close, however. The USB (digital) output of the PP4 is 16 bit/48kHz, slightly above CD quality. With a decent DAC for playback, your files will sound far superior to compressed digital formats and quite sonically rewarding.Dick from Spearit Sound |

Compatible with nearly any moving magnet cartridge, the phono box mm gives you a superb audiophile music experience at an entry-level price. The utilization of advanced circuitry keeps noise and distortion extremely low, and the metallic case and outboard DC power supply keeps the unit free from electromagnetic interference. Since it's only slightly larger than a pack of playing cards, the phono box mm can be placed nearly anywhere. The RCA input and output sockets are gold-plated to preserve sound quality and can be connected directly to any line-level input (aux, CD, Etc.) on your amplifier.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i play vinyl from my B&O 3400 turntable & cartridge thru a vizio soundbar model# s4251w-b4? Do I need to use my pyramid sea2500x preamp too |
Answer: | Most likely. I go from my record player to this to a mixer. So I'm guessing your receiver probably has an aux in which is what you plug into from the art. |
Question: | Do i need to buy this for yamaha A-s801 integrated amp or that amp has a phono |
Answer: | Sansui? Ceramic's, as I recall, can run close to 1 V output. This preamp is designed for moving magnet cartridges (not moving coil) that produce ~ 5 mV output. Even at -10 dB on the gain/attenuation knob, it would still be too hot. 1 V with -10 dB attenuation is ~ 300 mV which is far more than supported. Per manufacturer, max input is 40 mV. So, no, this won't work with your ceramic cartridge. |
Question: | Just to be clear, my AVR (Onkyo tx-nr535) doesn't have a phono input. Do I connect the turntable to this device and plug this device into my AUX port |
Answer: | Without a ground wire, there may be a discernible hum. I have a Yamaha PF 1000 and the ground wire is is a must. |
Question: | How can i tell if my pioneer pl-460 is mm or mc |
Answer: | I've had both, and kept the DJpre. There's a thread on an audio science forum where a user conducted a thorough level-matched test of both the Pluto and the DJpre with an oscilloscope and other precision instruments. They both performed very well, but the DJpre came out decidedly on top in several key categories. Whether that translates to a noticeable difference in sound quality depends on the listener, but the DJpre is empirically better than the already good Pluto. He also found that the DJpre performed best when the low cut rumble filter was on--not only did it kill the sub-20hz sounds, it actually boosted the audible frequency response across the board (particularly the highs where the Pluto tends to roll off). This is easily the best phono pre at $50 and under, and performs better than units costing twice as much. You'd have to spend $250+ to get a better pre, and even then it'll only be a miniscule improvement. |
