The noise they block out are noises typically heard in airplanes like the engines, low noises, not people yelling and babies crying, just so you know.. If you want to not hear anything then you have to buy the expensive brands which do work very well, like bose and others..

Answer:	Noise cancelling technology, unless you spend hundreds of dollars, generally only reduce ambient noise that is consistent such as engine noise or airplane hum. They do not generally respond to inconsistent sounds like speech or sharp short term noises like car horns. They only reduce the noise but don't eliminate it so if the noise is loud it will still be somewhat overwhelming.
