12 best professional headphones
Professional headphones, also known as studio headphones or monitor headphones, are high-quality audio devices designed for professionals in the music, audio production, and broadcasting industries. These headphones are engineered to deliver accurate and detailed sound reproduction, making them essential tools for tasks like mixing, recording, and critical listening. Here are some key features and aspects of professional headphones:
Sound Quality: Professional headphones are renowned for their exceptional sound quality. They provide a flat frequency response, which means they reproduce audio as accurately as possible without adding coloration or emphasis to specific frequency ranges. This accuracy is crucial for audio professionals when editing and mixing audio tracks.
Over-Ear Design: Many professional headphones feature over-ear, circumaural designs. This design provides excellent noise isolation and ensures that the headphones cover the entire ear, minimizing sound leakage and external noise interference.
Comfort and Durability: These headphones are designed for extended use, so comfort is a priority. They typically have plush ear cushions and adjustable headbands for a secure and comfortable fit during long recording or mixing sessions. Additionally, professional headphones are built with durability in mind, using high-quality materials to withstand the rigors of daily studio use.
Closed-Back vs.Open-Back: Professional headphones come in two main designs: closed-back and open-back. Closed-back headphones offer better isolation from external noise and are suitable for tracking and recording in noisy environments. Open-back headphones have perforated ear cups, allowing for a more natural and open sound but less isolation. They are preferred for critical listening and mixing in quieter studio settings.
Impedance and Sensitivity: Professional headphones often come in various impedance ratings and sensitivity levels. The choice depends on the intended use. High-impedance headphones may require a dedicated headphone amplifier for optimal performance, while low-impedance headphones can be driven by standard audio equipment.
Detachable Cables: Many professional headphones have detachable cables, which are convenient for easy replacement or customization. Some models offer coiled cables that stretch when needed and retract to minimize tangling.
Foldable and Portable: While primarily designed for studio use, some professional headphones are foldable and portable, making them suitable for on-the-go professionals who need high-quality audio wherever they go.
Brand and Model Varieties: Various well-known audio companies produce professional-grade headphones, including Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, Beyerdynamic, AKG, Sony, and others. Each brand and model may have its unique sound signature and features, catering to different preferences and needs.
Price Range: Professional headphones come in a wide price range, from affordable options suitable for home studios to high-end models used in professional recording studios. The price often reflects the quality of materials, build, and audio performance.
Usage Scenarios: Professional headphones are used in a range of scenarios, including audio production (mixing, tracking, mastering), live sound monitoring, broadcasting, DJing, and critical listening for audiophiles.
In summary, professional headphones are designed to meet the demanding requirements of audio professionals, offering accurate sound reproduction, comfort, and durability. The choice of professional headphones depends on the specific needs and preferences of the user and the intended application in the world of music, audio production, and broadcasting.

User questions & answers
Question: | How do these headphones do with classical/acoustic music? Is the sound natural and sufficiently good |
Answer: | These headphones are tuned very flat, which is ideal for classical and acoustic music. I am very much a fan of acoustic guitar, and acoustic jazz. In my opinion, they are superb for that purpose. As with anything, the recording mix is beyond the listener's control, but if the recording has not had too much artificial enhancing done, you will be very pleased with the performance of these headphones. Highly recommend. |
Question: | What about "noise pollution"? Will other people on the bus be able to identify the music i'm hearing, what is the critical volume these hp will out |
Answer: | As with all things, moderation is appropriate. If you want to throb your head and damage your hearing later in life, then things are different. Normal sound levels, with the ear pads cupped together, you cannot hear music, coming from the head phones, inches away from your ears. While on your head, you will hear the full range of music. Pay attention, you will feel the music, crisp and sharp, highs and lows, with good L/R separation. So unless your head is swiss cheese, even if it was, I think no one will hear anything coming from them, but you. I am speaking from experience, rural Sunday morning bedroom with the window open, light breeze through the trees, birds are content. I guess mating season is over.On the bus, with head splitting music? I think you are safe listening to top secret national defense briefings, in addition to any other music you can think of. That is, the bus is expected to be diesel/gas, in first or second gear, going 25+ MPH, and there are at least 10 people on board keeping to themselves. The headphones have good noise isolation, so your sound levels, depending on environment, will vary. You cannot hold a conversation, as that would be both difficult and rude, while wearing. All that to say NO, you are safe. The notion of critical volume is subjective. Since the object is to not damage hearing, critical volume is beyond the scope anyone should be using them. With that said, at 75% max volume on an iPhone in a relatively quite room, you will be able to identify the music for sure, with the ear pads cupped. Between 60% to 70% volume, you will not comprehend what is being listened too. At 50% you will hear no sound at all. On the bus, I suspect 75% to 90% is safe, while 100% volume could be heard quite clearly by the person sitting next to you. You could share your music with the ear cups opened out flat around you neck, without damaging anything. |
Question: | I have a big head. Will the ATH-M40x work for me |
Answer: | I have an abnormally large head, probably top 5% of the population. The ATH-M40x at maximum extension are a tiny bit snug. It's actually a really good fit. If you have a "big" head, you're fine. If you regularly find you can't wear other brands of headphones, the M40s aren't especially roomy. Try them and be prepared for a return if necessary. |
Question: | How does this compare to the M |
Answer: | It depends on your application. First, the M50 is now the M50x, which includes improved ear cups as well as three interchangeable cables (short, long, coiled). The M50's have a bit better isolation than the M40's. Sonically, the M50's has the flatter response on provides less coloration to the music than the M40. I.e., the M50 is very, very precise. You will hear the source faithfully and any coloration and soundstage needs to come from there because these cans, by design, will not provide it. The M40 is a bit more musical and will be more forgiving with consumer grade gear. In studio or for technical/critical listening, I'd go with the M50x. For a live stage or personal listening, I'd seriously consider the M40x. |

User questions & answers
Question: | since there are the vents on the side, does the sound leak? can others hear it |
Answer: | These headphones are semi open back design. They sound much airier and natural compared to the closed back kind design. However on the downside, they do leak to some extent, specially on higher volumes. Others will be able to hear the higher freq. but will not be able to distinguish what is being played. Hope this helps. |
Question: | How do these compare to the Sennheiser HD 598 Headphones |
Answer: | I own both sets. The Sennheiser HD 598 and their predecessors HD 595 (see my review) are extremely SMOOTH, headphones you can fall asleep to. The Beyerdynamic DT 990-Pro 250 ohm are ANALYTICAL headphones. You will not fall asleep with these as they demand your full attention. Different purpose I would say. |
Question: | I see alot of reviews saying these headphones fatigue fairly quickly. I saw simuliar views on the grados and after an hour they began to really hurt |
Answer: | This is a common complaint, but let me clear things up a bit. Treble can sound fatiguing for two reasons: 1. energy storage in the treble, 2. loud treble. Energy storage is very bad, think of when you ring a bell. After the initial strike the bell continues ringing for several seconds. You don't want your headphones to do this, because not only will you get loud fatiguing treble, all the notes will blend together. An eq will not fix this. The second reason is having clean treble that's just louder than the rest of the spectrum. Grados are fatiguing for the first reason, DT990s for the second. The DT990 actually have very fast treble (no ringing), there's just a good 4-6dB bump from roughly 4 or 5khz up to about 8 or 9khz. If you tune that down with an EQ they sound great. Honestly I don't even use an EQ anymore, but if it bothers you and you have an eq, it's easy to fix. |
Question: | Are these better than beats are they more comftorable and do they have better sound quality, also does it have a mic |
Answer: | The point of these is purely sound quality and comfort, not portability. For the 80ohm you might be able to use ur phone, but for the 250s u need a dac/amp. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can anyone please recommend a usb adapter for this to plug into a PC? Thanks |
Answer: | A small, cheap usb DAC adapter probably won't work well for these. They need a bit of power to drive them properly. Power supplied solely from a PC USB port probably won't be enough (500mA max for USB 2.0 and 900mA max for USB 3.0). You will get much better results from an external audio interface and/or a headphone amp. |
Question: | comfort |
Answer: | They are very comfortable for the first hour or so. I sometimes wear my glasses rather than my contact lenses while using these headphones, and have found that with glasses the comfortable period is much shorter due to pressure on the wire earpieces. The The coiled cable is fairly long, and if you move around in a chair while using these with a laptop, the cable will eventually snare you. The cable connects to the left earphone, and if your earphone connector is on the right side of your computer, receiver, TV or whatever, that means the cable has to be draped across the front of your body. You could reverse the phones on your head, but that would put the left channel into your right ear and vice versa. There's probably a way to reverse channels to correct this. |
Question: | How is noise leakage out of these headphones? I am interested in using them for vocal recording so mix leaking out is a no-no |
Answer: | Even with loud volumes, the leakage is generally non-existent. The volume needs to be uncomfortably loud for me to start hearing a very slight sound leak. |
Question: | Are these a good choice for listening to music at home? I work from home, and I need music to concentrate |
Answer: | I love these headphones for listening to music as well as TV. I had a pair of MDR-V6 phones I bought from Tower Records in Nashville years and years ago in the early 90s that just died after almost 30 years of service, and these are very very similar. These don't have quite the bass that the V6s did, and the highs are a little brighter, but that will be in my best interest if they last me 20+ years like the V6s did! There's a reason the MDR7506s became an industry standard soon after they were released by Sony in 1991 and it's not because they're bad to listen to. If you want to listen to your music the way the engineers and artists probably heard it in production, grab a pair of these. Hit YouTube and watch the in-studio recordings of Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales songs and look at the headphones everybody is wearing. Everybody. Mix of both MDR-V6 and MDR7506, the MDR-V6s having been released six years earlier in 1986. All the way up to current times like the video for "Times Like These" with Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Ellie Goulding and all those other artists that was released a few weeks ago had a couple of people wearing them. That's longevity. I found that they are more comfortable with the aftermarket lambskin leather earpads that you can find for around $20. They aren't super easy to put on, but are very comfortable. I love the headphones for listening to music as well as television when I don't want to keep people up at night. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can any recommend an amp for these? i was thinking of getting the objective 2 but if anyone else has a better one please tell me. p.s. i'm on a budget |
Answer: | I powered the HD599s with my LG-G4 smartphone, an Acer Chromebook R-13 (excellent headphone section for a laptop), a Schiit Modi 2 Uber/ Vali 2 (Genalex Gold Lion 6922 tube) stack that I use at work (I also used a Schiit Magni 2 Uber with the Magni 2 Uber), and a Schiit Bifrost Multibit/Valhalla 2 (Genalex Gold Lion 6922 tubes)stack I have at home (I also used a Schiit Asgard 2 with the Bifrost). I did/do not apply any equalization or effects when I listen. Like all the higher end Sennheiser headphones, the HD599s improved noticeably as the driving components improved. After a lot of listening to the 598s and 599s I concluded that they both sounded best when run through my Bifrost/Asgard 2 stack (The Modi 2U/ Magni 2U pairing was also excellent), so this is how I listened when doing my analysis. Like most lower impedance headphones, they both seem to prefer solid state amps to OTL tube amps, but they did pair well with the Vali 2 (a hybrid tube amp) as well. I know the O2 is a brighter amp (and solid state) and would probably pair quite we with these. |
Question: | How is the bass on these headphones? Does it effect the mids/highs at all |
Answer: | While these aren't "bass head" headphones, they have noticeably more bass than their predecessor the HD 598s. I always found the HD 598s to be a little "bass light", where the HD 599s have a much richer sound. The HD 599's are more musical where the HD 598s are more analytical. Depending on the track and your listening level there may be some noticeable intermodulation distortion where the bass frequencies will distort the mids and highs. On Deadmau5's new track "Let Go" the effect is very noticeable when you turn them up (and not all that loud). Playing the same track on my HD 600s, HD 650s, and HD 700s does NOT result in this distortion. It isn't that the bass is distorting, it just interferes with the mids and highs. These HD 599s are my daily driver (at work) and I REALLY like them. They are a far more versatile than the HD 598s, they sound fantastic, and I don't regret the purchase at all. At work I run them on a Schiit Modi 2 Uber/Magni 2 Uber stack and the pairing with the HD 599s is excellent. The highs are also better on the HD 599s than the HD 598s (which struggled with "Sh" and "F" sounds). |
Question: | Can you use these on a phone |
Answer: | I do So everyday at work. No external DAC or Preamp, and its just an iPhone 6. |
Question: | How do these compare to the 598s |
Answer: | I think the sound is tighter, the base is slightly more pronounced, again, tighter with some snap but not boom box silliness. The sound is more focused as if you were close to the stage and not several rows back. The soundstage or separation is very close to the 98 but not that noticeable unless you're very observant. The build is better, and these phones will not have to be handled like rice paper or egg shells. Overall, just a better headphone, really. It is said, by many, the 599 shares some values present in the Senn 600 with its clinical clarity and separation of instruments present. The highs are well rounded, not sharp or shrill. The midrange presence is very solid, and not released. These are not V sounding phones like your M50 Audio Technica. To me, those phones are offensive. The V sound is pronounced base, kind of extreme, and ditto for the offensive treble while the mids are not really projected. The Senn is the opposite, a very balanced headphone in all respects, with wonderful separation, clarity, and build. It is a great all around jack of all trades headphone. That is, TV movies sound really good with these and music, well, I like them better for the focus and presence compared to the 598. Hope this helps. As far as the 598, those are cheaper if you buy the black model. And the 558 sounds a lot like them, and even cheaper if money is an issue. You may also, for a few dollars more, look into the Shure 1440 headphones. They are within affordable range, just as good as the 599 in every way, but do not have that dark and sometimes veiled sound as the Senn does. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these suppress engine noise |
Answer: | They suppress all noise by virtue of the seal around the ear, but they won't block it out because they're not technically noise canceling (no active noise suppression). They also do better with high frequency noise and aren't as good in low frequency where much engine noise lies, which is true of all things that only passively block noise eg ear plugs. So the answer is yes to a limited degree, but it won't be a complete suppression by any means and more in the high frequencies. I've found the combo of these with earplugs to be very effective for airplane noise. |
Question: | Is the cord detachable? The description says it is detachable, answers here say otherwise |
Answer: | The cord is not detachable but it is replaceable. If you're handy with a soldering iron you can however easily add a 3.5mm headphone jack to use a removable cable. |
Question: | How is the sound leakage? l need portable headphones to use in the bus, library, and such. I don't want to bother people around me |
Answer: | There is "sound leakage". At the moment, I have them hooked up to my computer. No special amplification, just on-board Realtek. At 75-100% volume, I can slightly hear them over ambient noise (such as my heater, which is kind of loud) while standing about ten feet away. I don't know if everyone else that answered this question listens to their music at low volume, or if their headphones have some insulation that mine doesn't but in my experience, there is plenty of "sound leakage". Also, you could actually use these as speakers while you're not wearing them. They wouldn't be loud enough to entertain anyone, but you could still listen to something while they sit on your desk. |
Question: | How durable are they in cold weather |
Answer: | I’m a professional location sound mixer in Alaska. I’ve had these headphones out in -50 F weather for 12 hour shoots. These headphones can withstand the cold |
