12 best cloth dye
Cloth dye, also known as fabric dye, is a type of coloring agent used to change or enhance the color of fabrics. It is commonly used in arts, crafts, and sewing projects. Here are some key points about cloth dye:
Types of Cloth Dye:
- Direct Dyes: These are water-soluble dyes that are directly applied to the fabric. They are used with the help of a mordant (a substance that helps fix the dye to the fabric).
- Reactive Dyes: These are a type of direct dye that reacts chemically with the fabric. They are known for producing vibrant and long-lasting colors.
- Acid Dyes: These dyes are designed for use with protein-based fibers like wool and silk. They require an acidic environment for effective dyeing.
- Basic Dyes: These are synthetic dyes that are used on acrylic, nylon, and modified polyester fibers. They are positively charged and work best in an alkaline environment.
Dyeing Techniques:
- Immersion Dyeing: The fabric is completely submerged in a dye bath. This method ensures even color distribution.
- Tie-Dyeing: Fabric is tied or folded in various ways before dyeing, creating unique patterns and designs.
- Batik: Wax is applied to the fabric to create a resist, and then the fabric is dyed. The waxed areas retain their original color.
- Spray Dyeing: Dye is sprayed onto the fabric, creating a mottled or speckled effect.
Color Fastness: This refers to the ability of the dyed fabric to retain its color over time, even after washing or exposure to light. Some dyes are more colorfast than others.
Safety Precautions: When working with cloth dye, it's important to follow safety instructions provided by the manufacturer. This may include wearing protective gloves, working in a well-ventilated area, and avoiding contact with skin and eyes.
Fabric Compatibility: Different types of cloth dye are designed for specific types of fabrics. For example, acid dyes work best on protein-based fibers like silk and wool, while direct dyes can be used on a wider range of fabrics.
Application Methods:
- Liquid Dyes: These are typically mixed with water and applied to the fabric using techniques like immersion dyeing or spray dyeing.
- Powdered Dyes: These are mixed with water to create a dye bath. The fabric is then immersed in the bath.
Fixatives and Mordants: Some dyes require fixatives or mordants to help set the color. These substances assist in bonding the dye molecules to the fabric.
Availability: Cloth dye is readily available in craft stores, fabric shops, and online retailers. They come in a wide range of colors and types to suit various projects.
Remember to carefully read and follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer for best results when using cloth dye in your projects.

User questions & answers
Question: | anyone have pics of finished products of evening blue and royal blue and nayvy blue |
Answer: | I accidentally bought this instead of the all purpose dye, so I decided to test it before returning. It did dye the cotton. I’m not sure how well it will hold up, especially given the large amount of dye I used compared to normal, but it did appear to work |
Question: | Wil this help me run for office |
Answer: | I used this on couch covers from the 1980's. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what they were made of. NO dye worked until this one. The dye took beautifully. My cushions went from a medium/light brown, to deep charcoal grey. I can still see a touch of brown in the final color, but I will dye again to get a darker color. I don't have a pot big enough, so I filled my sink with super hot water from the tap, and then poured a gallon of water in from a tea kettle. I stirred in the dye, and added *already wet* fabric (more even dye distribution). I store a few times for 20 min, then covered the sink in foil and put a few pans on top to keep the heat in and let it set for two hours or so! I rinsed, washed in cold water in my washer with a little powder soap and the cushions look great! If you want a black color, you likely will need to dye twice, maybe three times. The longer you leave it in the dye, and the hotter you can keep it over time, the better it will set. |
Question: | How many yards of fabric can I dye with each bottle? I can't seem to find this information |
Answer: | It will not cover the stains. Best Solution. Completely bleach product -if it is one solid color-and then dye. My white blouse turned out beautifully. |
Question: | Can this work on glasses |
Answer: | According to RIT website. 2.5 cups Graphite 1/4 cup Racing Red 2 tablespoons Sapphire Blue 3 gallons Water Makes BLACK |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work as intended - on 100% cotton |
Answer: | Yes, you can use this on satin. If you have any further inquiries, please contact iLoveToCreate at [email protected] or call 1-800-438-6226. |
Question: | Just curious. How dark does this dye actually get? Is it even remotely close to black |
Answer: | I wouldn't know! It's mostly for fabric but you can test it out and see if it works on glass. |
Question: | I have a light blue table cloth that has stains that I cannot remove, would this dye cover the stains |
Answer: | Yes, you can also use our Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint on glass. Kind Regards, Tulip Color |
Question: | Is "graphite" the new black |
Answer: | I'm not sure of the block print process, but it does adhere well to fabric. I had spread a thin, even layer of the fabric paint into canvas sneakers with a Qtip. It went on nicely, stayed on, and has not cracked or peeled- even at the points of the sneakers that are constantly flexing. Good luck! |

Rit 02640 Dyemore, 7 oz, Midnight Navy
A dye made specifically for synthetic fabrics, which includes anything with 35% or more polyester, acrylic or acetate. Each little bottle packs a colorful punch and is ready to deliver a custom touch to garments new and old, household items, and more. It even works on 3D printed items, lacrosse sticks, wigs and most plastics. Plus, just like our original formula, Rit DyeMore is non-toxic and safe for sewer and septic systems
Important Note
Due to the complexity of dyeing synthetics, you must use Rit DyeMore with the stovetop method to maintain an almost boiling temperature for the duration of your dyeing. Accordingly: you cannot use Rit DyeMore to dye anything that won’t fit into a pot on your stove and you cannot use your washer because the machine won’t be able to achieve the water temperature needed for Rit DyeMore to penetrate the fabric.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used for Tie dye |
Answer: | I did 2 pair of faded back Levi jeans with one pod and the result was spectacular. It restored the jeans to their original jet black color. The directions suggest 2 pair of jeans per pod which should give you an approximate idea of how much fabric one pod will do. They say a pod will completely do a king size set of sheets |
Question: | I want to take out old hem lines...will the dye work on that |
Answer: | No - follow directions. |
Question: | Looking to dye a wedding dress. Will this 3 pack work? Will the washing machine method get the best red color? How long will it take to dye |
Answer: | The pods contain salt in them with the dye. No need to add salt or vinegar. |
Question: | What happens if you use it on a red or gray shirt, will it turn black |
Answer: | It did not stain my machine and I did black |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it stay overnight before rinsing, 20 hours |
Answer: | Tie-dye Refill packs are available in Blue, Orange, Yellow, Green, Purple, Turquoise, Red, Black and Fuchsia. |
Question: | Hello i purchased this few weeks ago and i noticed i hardly have pink but every color i have a lot of the powder. was this a defective box |
Answer: | Just to be safe, I always wash alone for the first few washes. After that, I haven't had any problems with color bleed. |
Question: | Will it work for lace |
Answer: | color results are about same using coloring directions; i've found at least 2-3 additional dye packs to most formulas give deeper blacks. |
Question: | are they one time use bottles of color? or can i activate a color, and store it for a future use |
Answer: | Hi Maureen, in general all cotton dyes well. White fabric to Black dye produces a good outcome. I add distilled White vinegar and Epsom salts in HOT water with the dye. Let the garment soak 2 or 3 times longer than the directions call for. Use more dye to insure a deep Black color. I hope that helps! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I really need to use the color stay after using the Dye |
Answer: | Not sure how much you will need but since there is a polyester blend mixed in they won't be completely black, they'll be like a very dark grey purple but still looks good. I did Polyester blend curtains (the really thick ones), they are something like 8'x6' and I used one bottle to about 4 gallons of water if that helps. |
Question: | Sunbleached clothes, will it fix this |
Answer: | I don’t see why not. It didn’t work for me but I was using a synthetic fabric which I was later told requires a special type of dye. If your canvas is cotten there should be no problem |
Question: | Will this strip all color from a garment? I'm trying to fix an item that was made to look vintage |
Answer: | Velvet is a polyester, so sounds like the polyester version would get the best results. |
Question: | How often do I need to use the DYE Fixitive on the same article of clothing?Don't want my black jeans to fade so do I need to do this before each wash |
Answer: | I would highly recommend this dye for cotton fabrics. You CAN use it on cotton/poly blend, but remember that the more poly in the blend, the less dye will bind and the lighter the color will be. Hope this helps! |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have about 20 king and queen sized white bed sheets, 60% cotton/40% polyester blend. will this dye them permanent black? how much dye will i need |
Answer: | About the same as a Sharpie marker ... starts fading noticeably with each "whites" wash cycle (hot wash with chlorine bleach). Should survive better in cold or warm wash without chlorine bleach. |
Question: | Can this be used to dye white canvas drop clothes |
Answer: | I don’t think so. I recommend using chubbiee no-iron kids clothing labels for permeant use. At least they will not stain your garments lol. |
Question: | Will it work on velvet |
Answer: | I used these on two black hoodies with bleach spots, but the black of the pens was darker than the sort of faded black of the sweatshirt. The white spots are now just black spots. I'm hoping after a bunch of washes, it'll fade and not be so noticeable. |
Question: | Can this be use on Plastic Fabric as well |
Answer: | Zero washes! Completely runs with any water! |

Question: | Can these colors be mixed with RIT dye for variations |
Answer: | Yes. I made an a teal using the green and blue, but I made the liquid first then mixed the colors. |
Question: | Will this work on nylon cotton blends |
Answer: | Just an estimate but they say it will dye 10 med shirts which are dbl thickness so maybe 20 per box x 2 boxes = approx 40 bandanas. If children do dying, have hel to keep them from going overboard with dye. Hope this helps |
Question: | When will this product become available |
Answer: | It last about 24 hours, and yes, you can make small batches of dye. |
Question: | How well do dyed items do in the wash? Im concerned about leeching dye onto other clothes |
Answer: | These bottles contained 2.8 ounces color powder. And we do have one more extra pack included for spare. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I prepare this product: washing machine, spot dye, or other? Thank You |
Answer: | I did not use the color stay after using the dye. FYI - Dye is only a brightener, not a dye. |
Question: | I plan on using this brand of dye (assorted colors) to dye 100% cotton rugs. Can you tell me what other products I might need to buy |
Answer: | *You have to dye/color the clothing first. You have to follow the directions completely in order to get the color you want. That includes having the water very hot for the dying of the clothing. Then you'll want to use the Rit Dye Fixative to set the color in the garment. |
Question: | How colorfast is this dye? Can the resulting fabric/clothes be washed with warm water |
Answer: | Sets the colors, not strip. Keeps deep color from bleeding & fading. I used this on Cranberry tablecloth. |
Question: | How much liquid dye does each container make |
Answer: | I don’t know if this would work on black jeans, but I do know that if you wash your black jeans inside out, they will keep their color longer. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would these colors hold to acrylic yarn |
Answer: | Cover dyed fabric with plastic wrap to keep damp. Let set 6-8 hours or longer for most intense colors. Rinse well with water until excess dye is removed. Cut rubber bands if used. Fill washer to "large load" setting with hottest water suitable for fabric and a small amount of laundry soap. Wash and dry separately. Wash separately for the first few washes. |
Question: | How long does it take to dry |
Answer: | Never have but give it a try on something you not to worried about if it's a fail |
Question: | how does the process of spray differ from traditional tie dye |
Answer: | I did 6 kid shirts, 1 kid sweatshirt, 2 adult shirts, and an adult sweatshirt. So my guess would be at least 12 since the sweatshirts and adult shirts take more dye but could manage more depending on how much white you want on the shirts. Ours were all completely saturated |
Question: | Will it work on wool fabric |
Answer: | No |
